The Home Improvements Thread (3)

Obviously it depends on literally everything but I’m curious what a rough ballpark range would cost to renovate this kitchen.

Let’s say we’d want to
- keep the cupboard carcass but change the doors to a similar style but different colour.
- change the floors to a decent oak coloured laminate wood
- rip out the stove and oven and replace with freestanding gas stove
- change counter tops to white marble or ceaser stone.

Would doing all that be astronomical?

not sure the floor area, but lets guess.

1) take the doors off and sand + spray/paint them matt black = R1,000 <-- DIY
2) sand and spray/paint the outside areas of the carcass to matt black = R500 <-- DIY
3) new sink + white caesarstone top = R19,000 <-- installed
4) new eye level oven = R4,000 <-- DIY
5) new gas hob = R4,000 <-- installed
6) new backsplash = R5,000 <-- installed
7) new floor tiles = R3,500 <-- installed
8) new tap = R1,500 <-- DIY
9) new plugs R500 <-- DIY
10) new extractor fan = R1,200 <-- DIY
11) new door handles = R800 <-- DIY

Total = R41,000 some work done by you, some by someone else.

If you want to cut your costs down, have a laminate wood countertop from Leroy Merlin's, they're R2,900 for 3m, lets say you get two of them. So deduct around R6,000 from this bill and your new total would be R35,000 give or take.

Omg this is gorgeous. You went into my brain!

Overall we decided not to go with the house because there was a lot more work that needed to be done but I’m saving this pic for the future!

Do you do renovations or was that just for fun? I’m obsessed

no just for fun, AI nowadays is amazing, anything can be done in a few minutes!

Thanks for this.

Black & White always does the job.

I have a little holiday home kitchen reno planned. Basic stuff. Will share later.
So the place has an old plaashuis vibe, located in the bushveld. Stoep with a roof all around the house, etc. Built about 20 years ago, I would say. We have had it for 15 years now. Nothing fancy, nice and cosy. But the kitchen has always been a bit lacking.

I have a Smegg freestanding stove/oven that was damaged while moving, which my mother always wanted to put in this kitchen, but my father was not having it, not sure why. So now they have both passed on, and I decided to change the kitchen a bit.

The movers bumped the glass door and it broke. Ordered a new door the other day , fscking R5500. The unit has been in storage for the last 5 years.

So my idea is to break out the existing stove and cubpoard underneath. And put a nice splashback tile of some sort on the sides and the back. The red unit will slot right in that opening with about 10cm gap on each side.

Then I am going to remove that stupid freestanding cupboard with the oven and microwave and move the mirror fridge in that space. The corner where the door is, the door will be closed up with brickwork. We have never even once used that door. Wasted space. And I want to put concrete counters like what is to the right of the stove in that corner where the door is.

The mirror fridge has only been moved there recently. Not using it yet. It is stuff that came out of my late fathers house. So its just pushed into that corner temporarily.

Here you can see what is to the right side of the stove. I want to remove that cupboard and install like a free standing butler sink/prepping bowl type thing there in the middle where the current concrete counter ends. And then continue with the concrete counter into the corner and to the right where the grey fridge is. That fridge will then come out.

Something like this there in the middle of the window with the concrete counters.

I don't want to fit cupboards under the counters. Will just make a shelve kind of thing.

just upload your photo of your kitchen to ChatGPT (I've tried the wife, doesn't want to enhance her....) anyway once that is done in 1 min, then just write what you want, eg. make the kitchen cupboards black and a white countertop

the more it looks like a kitchen or whatever area you are going for the easier it will be, if its hectically cluttered it can struggle

post your pics

Hmmm..

We are planning our family bathroom reno.. it's a long narrow space, toilet, bath vanity only at the moment..

To make room for a shower, we need to move the toilet and brick up half of the near floor to ceiling window..

Let's see what ChatGPT can do with this ask....

I saw this "open plan" space-saving idea on Private Property the other day. The shower is situated right next to the bath. Looks doable and practical.

Oh, yeah, it's doable and the space is there.. Though, only if the toilet moves, but that can only happen if the window is bricked up halfway..

I am more interested in seeing ChatGPT tackle the challenge of moving a toilet and brick up half a window..

Alright.. with a more iterations, I might come end up with something useful.. this was a first run, asking only to move the toilet, add the shower and brick up the window and nothing else..

What is there at the moment:

I am not sure what it did with the bath, but like I said, I didn't ask it to do anything else..

the room is also magically wider, so its really deceptive
