The Honda e (EV)

The Honda E Will Die Because Europe Loves SUVs Too Much

The e:Ny1 is the future. All hail the Honda e:Ny1.

The Honda E is a car that we love the idea of, but we also fully understand why Honda doesn’t sell it in the U.S. It’s adorable and charming but still too expensive for the limited range it offers. But dammit, it’s so adorable. And did we mention that it’s charming? Sadly, though, the time of the Honda E will soon come to an end because even Europe is too obsessed with SUVs.

Speaking at the launch of the e:Ny1, Honda UK boss Rebecca Adamson told Autocar, “There won’t be more cars the size of the Honda E. I can say that confidently. The market demand in the UK is the SUV sector, so that’s why the focus is there. It’s a market-led product line-up. As long as that’s where the market is, we will continue to be SUV driven.”

Oh no! Honda is killing off the adorable e in the UK and Europe

Honda confirms the diddy EV's time is up

Sad news alert: Honda is killing off the cute all-electric Honda e. Oh no!

Honda confirmed to TopGear.com it wouldn't be taking any more orders for the adorable EV in the UK and Europe, its mission clearly having been accomplished. Honda said it brought "many new customers to the brand with its distinctive design, advanced technology and trademark Honda driving dynamics".

It also "spearheaded [the brand’s] strategy to electrify 100 per cent of Honda’s mainstream European line up by 2022". The stupidly-named albeit highly competent e:NY1 is its indirect replacement.

So why’s it been canned? We suspect the little car was just a bit too pricey (north of £37k for basics) and too limited in range (137 miles officially) to justify costs to punters, and so lack of demand has curtailed production.

It sounds like Honda is working on a follow-up to the glorious e

A dinky all-electric city car is possible, says Honda's electrification boss Katsushi Inoue

The Honda e may have had a tiny range and a hefty price tag, but it remains a wonderful piece of design. It was discontinued in late 2023 and it’s safe to say the e:NY1 hasn’t exactly filled the gap in our hearts.

Thankfully, it sounds as though Honda does have plans to replace the e at some point in the future. “We understand the market for small electric cars is blooming,” said Katsushi Inoue, former Honda Motor Europe boss and now the man in charge of its 'electrification business development operations'. Important sounding job.

“So far, we are planning to do that independently from 0 Series,” he told TG at the 2025 CES show in Las Vegas. “We are thinking about it and considering it, but it is too early to confirm anything. There is nothing concrete to talk about today.

“We know the market is there, but 0 Series cannot go that small. The market situation is fully understood. We want to take advantage of burgeoning markets.”
