The Huawei E5186 LTE-A discussion thread

Could do with some guidance. I am in Observatory Ext. overlooking golf course and Cyrildene to my NE. Only Alternative to Telkom adsl is Yes, Telkom LTE. Signal is not great, test in my study was D/L 24 Mbps and U 2.5 Mbps. If I could hold onto that it would be great. The adsl after a lot of pestering is now running at an acceptable 3.7 Mbps D/L and 0.40 Up. But give it a month and it will be back at an erratic 1.8 D/L Up impossible. I suspect to much traffic going through Yeoville Exchange.

Back to the E5186,( Before you throw me off ) while I have no expectation of LTE A coming here, I could very easily end up in Killarney, Jhb. There Telkom has strong LTE A signal.
Back here in Observatory the offer is B315 with 30 or 50 Gb of data from R 499-R 699. Now when I check the Web Site they are charging R 699 for LTE A 50 GB with the E5186.

Is the E5186 Backward compatible to Standard LTE from Telkom. If yes and they will not give me the E5186. Then I will go and buy one and do data only. Where can the E5186 be bought ?

I have tried to find other LTE operators with service here, Vodacom, no coverage. MTN expensive and not very customer responsive. iBurst would be great ( MTN & iBurst) have towers above my head. But, iBurst is so wrapped up with FNB, they are not interested. Neotel,Cell C no offerings.
What would you do ?

Get B315s R999 cash in Edgars/Jet/CNA stores (Telkom section), then get one of Telkom packages month to month contract.
With some risk involved and long-term contract: get Telkom Unlimited R599 with B315s and antenna installed, when you move to Killarney, you should be able to use their LTE-A infrastructure.

E5186 is not worth of pursuing. If you get the same speed in a new place, you will be happy for long time.

Yes, you need full-featured router. Put this router's IP address in Huawei DMZ menu option, it will pass all traffic to this router. Connect any Huawei LAN port to the WAN port of the router.

Any one that can advise me what to change on the Huawei E5186 with Telkoms LTE-A to allow for OpenDNS? (like unotelly)
I have registered with unotelly and tried adding these IP's to the Huawei Router's Ethernet Settings: Primary and Secondary DNS Servers and it did not work.
I had to set connection mode to Dynamic IP as no info available for PPPoE.

Neither did https://www.opendns.com/welcome/

Please advise.

I did not change settings on the E5186. I changed the settings on the PS3.

Excuse me for being blonde. I have the e5186s-61a. Anyone know how to connect it to a PC? Do you have to have the antenna?

Connect the the Ethernet cable to the Lan ports on the Router ,then to the pc.

At present I could not find at retail or on line. Orange had some.

Now you might be able to buy from Telkom but I had to sign a 2 year contract to get The Huawei E5186 LTE-A Wireless Broadband.

B315s can be found for R999 in Edgars/Jet/CNA stores (Telkom section).

Has anyone found a way to disable wifi permanently? I just use this router as a modem which feeds into my wifi router with a cable. I don't want wifi enabled on the E5186. Since there is a button on the side this could easily be bumped when ones domestic cleans. Also can WPS be disabled too? Maybe a newer firmware allows this?

You can enable/disable both channels individually. WPS is also disabled if the SSID-Broadcast is disabled.

Hi Guys, Can anyone advise me whether the E5186 Lan IPis Also locked like the B315. On the B315 I cant change the lan IP unless if it starts with 192.168....

Thx.

It is possible on B315s (almost sure that the same on B5186) using WEB browser (with some knowledge) or with this tool:
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...x-for-new-Huawei-HiLink-devices-(E5186-B315s)
I don't need it, but I did some tests for the guys like you. :)

thx SA Junkie, the tool worked perfectly. My Lan IP is now completly changed.

I'm still curios how would I change the Lan Ip of the router using the web browser, As I tried every possible setting and still could NOT change it from the default 192.168.8.1, except if I changed the last 2 segments of the IP address.

Is it easy to change it via the web browser? maybe share some light with this newbie.

thx.

Is it worth getting the E5186 (R2600cash) rather than the B315 free on 24month 30GB for R499? With E5186 having ac-Wifi, will I realise a difference? The speed is less of an issue as I've tested my Bros B315 30Mb+ in my area.
Your input will really be appreciated!

You will benefit from ac WiFi (when streaming full HD movies over WiFi) definitely important. Other than that your benefits are neggible. Faster in LTE-A areas - yes, but you say it is not important when getting 30Mbps already.

Get B315s from Edgars/Jet/CNA for R999. Then sign to month to month subsrciption service (without device) instead 24-months contract.
