Hyundai i20 N Line

Hyundai Motor Europe has announced the new i20 N Line with an upgraded look. Featuring refreshed design elements both internally and externally, the Hyundai i20 N Line aims to enhance the driving experience with its sleek and modern appearance. The sporty iteration of the i20 model is set to begin production in April.

At first glance

The new Hyundai i20 N Line presents a range of exterior enhancements, boasting a captivating sporty aesthetic. These enhancements include a newly designed set of 17" alloy wheels and an updated pattern for the front radiator grille. Additionally, N Line-specific design elements such as the bumper and inserts add a distinctive flair to the vehicle's appearance. This model offers a choice of nine body colours, including four new options: Lumen Grey Pearl, Meta Blue Pearl, Vibrant Blue Pearl, and Lucid Lime Metallic, allowing drivers to express their individual style on the road.

Stepping into the cabin, drivers will immediately notice the addition of multicolour ambient lights, creating a dynamic ambiance that complements the vehicle's sporty character. Furthermore, to ensure optimal visibility and convenience for passengers, new LED lights have been added to map, interior, and sun visor areas, particularly useful in darker settings.

N Line character

The new Hyundai i20 N Line embodies the signature N-specific design elements meticulously crafted to elevate both the driving experience and visual appeal. These features include the iconic N Line logo adorning the radiator grille, enhancing the vehicle's commanding presence. Inside, the cabin exudes a motorsport-inspired ambiance with interior controls and accents in striking red and metal finishes. The exclusive N Line steering wheel, complete with perforated leather and exclusive red stitching, enhances both the dynamic aesthetics and the driver's grip. Complementing this is the specially designed gear knob, featuring luxurious leather inlays, bold red accents, and the prominent N logo, serving as a focal point in the cabin. Additionally, the non-slip aluminum-look sports pedals and contrast stitching throughout the interior subtly accentuate the high-performance design ethos of the N Line, while the sporty seats with ample neck support and side cushions deliver both control and comfort during driving.

Hyundai I30N and I20N Axed for Europe

It’s the end of the road for the Korean hot hatch duo as the Hyundai I30N and I20N are axed to make way for electric performance cars.

Yet more vehicles have been given the chop as production of the performance-orientated hatchback duo of the Hyundai I30N and I20N will come to an end in February 2024.

In an official statement, Hyundai said: ‘Production of the ICE N models has ceased for the European market starting from February, in line with our commitment to offering a zero-tailpipe-emission line-up to our customers by 2035 and to operating 100 per cent carbon neutrally by 2045. Going forward in Europe, Hyundai is developing Hyundai N as a pioneer of high-performance EVs. Our customers will benefit from technological developments that will make EVs even more attractive in the future.’

We’re hoping other markets like Australia will keep interest in these two fun cars alive, but we’re not holding out much hope. Pity, as the Hyundai I30N was a thoroughly entertaining product.

Two more excellent hot hatches bite the dust

Would the last hot hatch out the door please turn off the lights? Both the Hyundai i30N and i20N have been axed in Europe, because - yep, you guessed it - the South Korean brand is focusing on EVs.

A moment of silence please. The i30N was revealed in 2017, and as of its mid-life facelift it harboured 276bhp from a 2.0-litre turbo and the handling of a whippet on a tiled surface.

The i20N followed in 2020, and immediately confirmed that Albert Biermann’s (he of former BMW M fame) exceptional work on its larger sibling was no fluke.

But rather than kill off the N division altogether, instead Hyundai will put all of its effort into stuff like the Ioniq 5 N and that - in fairness - has given us hope for the future. So all is not lost.

Maybe in a world where the cheaper yet more powerful and lighter Swift Sport doesn't exist. That one even comes in manual for the car purists.

The i20 N Line is a lovely car but no ways should it be over R400k.

Review: Hyundai i20 1.0T N Line is a spirited and well appointed hatch

VERDICT

The i20 N Line is not exactly cheap, at R467,500, and there is more sensible value to be found lower down in the range, but the flagship does offer a spirited and engaging drive that may just take the humdrum out of your commute.

But be sure to check out the Suzuki Swift Sport and Opel Corsa GS Line if you’re shopping in this neck of the woods.
