Hyundai brings fingerprint recognition to 2019 Santa Fe
Hyundai claims 'world's first' fingerprint car entry and starting function will be released in the next few weeks
Hyundai has announced it will introduce a fingerprint unlocking and entry system on the newly launched Santa Fe SUV, a feature that it claims is the first of its type in production in the world.
The technology sees the driver place their finger on a sensor located on the 2019 Santa Fe’s door handle. The print is then identified and transferred to a fingerprint controller inside. The doors are unlocked, and the driver can then start the car by touching the ignition button, which is also equipped with a print scanner.
Such systems have long been under development, but security concerns have before now proven difficult to overcome. Hyundai boasts it has addressed these by using “capacitance recognition” tech, which measures the differences in static electricity across a normal human fingertip to “efficiently prevent forgeries and faked fingerprints”. The chance of it misreading the fingerprint is said to be 1 in 50,000, a figure which improves over time as the system updates itself.
As well as unlocking and starting the car, Hyundai’s fingerprint recognition can set up customised profiles for specific prints, configuring the seat, mirrors and connectivity tech for each driver. R&D boss Albert Biermann claims Hyundai “plans to further expand the application of the technology to allow the adjustment of temperature, steering wheel position, and many other features”.
Currently, only simplified fingerprint recognition - including that of the Bentley Bentayga's lockable storage compartment - is in production. No UK launch date for the system has been revealed - first example of the new Santa Fe are arriving here in the next few weeks - but January will see the system launch in China.

Verdict
The Santa Fe 2.2D Premium impressed us overall. It looks good, offers sufficient performance/fuel efficiency and delivers an exceptionally comfortable ride. Its interior is spacious, well-made (perceived build quality is high), plus it comes well-specced with standard features.
Should you consider the Santa Fe over its more popular rivals? Well, provided you can afford it, definitely! While the price difference between the Hyundai and its Japanese and American rivals may seem large, consider that the Santa Fe is more refined in terms of engine noise and ride quality; it should be easier to live with on a day-to-day basis. It’s arguably more practical too, especially if you are looking for a spacious family car.
For example, in the Fortuner, the 3rd-row seat folds up and to the side, resulting in an awkward luggage space. This is not the case in the Santa Fe, which has a more practical, flat load floor. What's more, a lengthy warranty and service plan make it a good long-term ownership proposition. It may not have set the sales charts alight, but that should not detract from the fact that the Santa Fe is a top-notch (albeit 2-wheel-drive) Adventure SUV.

Love the design of this car, but can't help but feel the Hyundais lag behind their rivals in terms of quality interior finishes. Everything always looks/feels a bit plasticy.

Hyundai has released a teaser image depicting its updated Santa Fe, while also confirming the large SUV will switch to a new platform.
Judging by the single image that has been released, the Santa Fe will gain an entirely new grille design and fresh daytime running light arrangement.
Although the fourth-generation Santa Fe was introduced as recently as 2018, the Korean firm describes the updated version as the “latest generation” rather than a facelift. It will feature a “dignified and charismatic exterior design”, as well as interior design updates “providing premium sensibility and comfort”, according to Hyundai.

Hyundai has taken the wraps off its thoroughly updated Santa Fe, which interestingly moves to a new platform.
Described as going “beyond a mere facelift”, the update comes a mere two years after the fourth-generation Santa Fe was introduced.
The company says the refreshed Santa Fe is the first Hyundai SUV to be based on its “all-new, third-generation” platform. It claims the new underpinnings allow for “significant improvements in performance, handling, fuel efficiency and safety”.
So, what's new in terms of styling? Well, the refreshed front end gains a wide grille that connects the main headlamp units. The distinctive lighting signature includes T-shaped LED daytime running lights.
Lower down, you’ll notice a large air intake, framed by vertically oriented “aerodynamic inlets” which the Korean firm says “improve air flow efficiency and strengthen the upright and robust impression”.
Hyundai has also widened the Santa Fe’s wheel-arch claddings and introduced new alloy wheel designs, including a 20-inch option. Round back, there are fresh taillamps connected by a red reflector band.
