DRIVEN: Updated Hyundai Santa Fe is a quality offering that’s worth a look

We drove the Santa Fe on dirt roads as well and it proved to be sure-footed throughout and decidedly more comfortable than its ladder frame competition.

Safety comes in the form of six airbags, ABS with EBD, brake assist, electronic stability control with traction control, hill start assist, downhill brake control, reverse parking collision assist, rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring. There’s also a reverse-view monitor.

When it comes to packing space there’s 634 litres at the back with the third row of seats folded and with my tall frame there was enough space for me in the passenger seat with the driver’s seat set to accommodate me.

Overall the Santa Fe is a quality offering with on point pricing and if you’re in that market it deserves to be on your shortlist especially because of Hyundai’s seven-year/200 000km manufacturers warranty, six-year/90 000km service plan and seven-year/150 000km roadside assistance.

You might lust after the premium-badged pantechnicons that are the practical Volvo XC90 or the suave Audi Q7, but if your budget doesn’t stretch to one, even used, then may we introduce you to the Hyundai Santa Fe?

This fourth-generation version takes all that made the earlier cars so promising – the space, the practicality and the affordability – and adds a bit of style and an extra dollop of refinement into the mix.

When it was first introduced three years ago, this seven-seater offered just one engine: a 197bhp 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel, with either front- or four-wheel drive. It was punchy and pleasant and enabled the Santa Fe to cover 0-60mph in 9.5sec and officially return 41.5mpg. It handled well, too, although was better suited to cruising than twisty country roads, and its ride was comfortable at all speeds.

Trim levels were but two. Premium provided an 8.0in touchscreen infotainment system, sat-nav, heated leather seats (front and back) and a heated steering wheel. Premium SE (later renamed Ultimate) added such niceties as ventilated front seats and a panoramic roof.

Inside, the driving position was good, with plenty of adjustment in the steering and seat; full lumbar adjustment was standard. The interior quality was impressive, too, and a decently responsive 10.3in touchscreen was standard.

There are currently only 2 Hyundai Santa Fe derivatives to choose from, the 2-wheel-drive Executive that’s priced at R769 500 and the 4-wheel-drive Elite at R869 500.

Hyundai has a particularly long warranty, which includes a 5-year/150 000 km cover on the vehicle and 7-year/200 000 km on the drivetrain. A 6-year/90 000 km service plan is included.

Verdict

Just as the pre-facelift Santa Fe was difficult to fault, the vast array of updates to this model have only made the Hyundai more difficult to criticise. At its price point, not many SUVs offer this level of driving comfort with 7-seater capability and this much luggage space. It’s very nearly the perfect family SUV apart from its lack of pukka off-road credentials. To be fair, it’s most likely good enough for any family adventure off the beaten track, other than those where a low-range transfer case would be a pre-requisite. It is certainly well worth a look if you’re shopping at the top end of the bakkie-based SUV market.

In summary

Since its original debut, the Santa Fe has been flying Hyundai's flag high in South Africa and has not put many a foot wrong. It's an all-round impressive vehicle with the looks to boot. While we would have liked the interior to take on a more digital approach and lessen the buttons, Hyundai's iteration of a premium SUV does not miss the mark and puts the money where its mouth is.

The Hyundai Santa Fe range is sold with a six-year or 90 000km service plan and a seven-year or 200 000km manufacturer's warranty.

Hyundai Santa Fe XRT edition revealed with roughed looks and extra kit​

The Hyundai Santa Fe XRT edition has been added to the SUV’s catalogue in the North American market. The unique pack includes a number of trimmings that help the South Korean product look more at home in the mountain setting but no additional off-roading tech is included.

With the Hyundai Santa Fe XRT pack, a front and rear black lower bumper fascia molding is applied along with dark silver front and rear skid plates, XRT-exclusive black door side moldings, side steps and a set of 18-inch dark alloy wheels. This is enhanced by a matte-black grille as well as black mirror covers, roof side rails and cross rails.
