For the first time in its history, Carlex Design has turned its attention to a South Korean vehicle, handing the Hyundai Santa Fe an extreme makeover and adding the "Urban Edition" moniker.

The company has given the pre-facelift version of the large SUV a head-turning body kit that includes a redesigned front bumper playing host to a massive grille, new foglamps and a splitter. At the rear, the aggressive theme continues with a rear diffuser housing quad-exhaust outlets and a prominent rear spoiler affixed to the top of the hatch.

Large seven-seat SUV moves upmarket with fresh underpinnings, new hybrid powertrains and revamped styling

Hyundai has priced up two new hybrid versions of its significantly updated Santa Fe flagship SUV, which brings a bold styling overhaul, fresh hybrid powertrains and an all-new platform in a bid to enhance the model’s premium appeal.

The seven-seater is the first model in Hyundai’s European line-up to move across to the ‘third-generation’ architecture, which already underpins the US-market Sonata saloon. The brand claims the new platform will offer “improved performance, efficiency and safety”.

The 2021 Santa Fe is available with hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains for the first time. The hybrid, priced from £40,205, is expected to be the most popular variant of the new model. It mates Hyundai's new Smartstream 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with a 59bhp electric motor and a 1.49kW lithium ion battery to produce 227bhp and 258lb ft. Both front- and four-wheel-drive configurations are available, emitting between 145 and 168g/km of CO2.

Refreshed Hyundai Santa Fe touches down in SA. We have pricing!

Revealed in 2020, the updated fourth-generation Hyundai Santa Fe has finally arrived in South Africa. The local arm of the Korean carmaker has now revealed pricing for its flagship SUV line-up, comprising two variants.

Locally, a single engine option is on offer – Hyundai’s 2,2-litre four-cylinder diesel motor, which is mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission sending 148 kW and 440 N.m (the latter on tap from 1 750 r/min to 2 750 r/min) to either the front wheels (in the entry-level, Executive derivative) or to all four corners in the Elite.

Priced at R769 500, the R2,2 Executive features, among others, screen-mirroring software, wireless smartphone charging, heated and ventilated front seats and reverse-view camera. Sited at the top of the two-strong model range, the R2,2 Elite AWD adds a panoramic sunroof and a rear door window curtain to the package, and, of course, the all-wheel-drive drivetrain. The R2,2 Elite AWD has an asking price of R869 500.

Ultimately, you considered buying the previous Santa Fe for its versatile and spacious cabin, bold styling and general ease of use.

The new car makes marginal gains in all those areas, but still has much less to shout about in terms of efficiency, dynamic appeal and, despite the generous level of standard kit, value for money.

An updated version of the 7-seater Hyundai Santa Fe SUV has touched down in South Africa. Here's how much you can expect to pay, plus specification details.

The 4th generation of Hyundai Santa Fe has received an update. The big flagship SUV from Hyundai celebrates 20 years of sales in South Africa, with the first model touching down back in 2000.

Visually, you can spot the newcomer with its redesigned front grille, featuring repositioned lights, new daytime running lights and a bolder grille pattern. At the rear, the exhausts have been repositioned under the bumper, there are new-look rear lights and there's a lightbar stretching across the rear. There are also new-look alloy wheels, which go up to 19-inch for the Elite model.

There's a new engine available. It also is a 2.2-litre diesel, but is 2151cc as opposed to the predecessor's 2199cc. Power and torque figures are now up to 148 kW and 441 Nm, in comparison to the old car's 145 kW and 436 Nm. The vehicle features a new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Summary

Based on our initial impressions, the latest Santa Fe represents a substantial improvement over its predecessor, with better performance and efficiency, enhanced practicality and a comprehensive standard features list that strengthens its buying proposition considerably. Also, Hyundai’s 7-year/200 000 km drivetrain warranty 5-year/150 000 vehicle warranty adds further peace of mind for prospective buyers.

Despite the Santa Fe’s obvious strengths, it remains to be seen how the market will respond to this latest iteration because it still exists in a grey area between bakkie-based offerings and Executive SUVs. The Santa Fe is a "softer" and arguably prettier alternative to traditional Adventure SUVs and we think it deserves to be your shortlist if you are in the market for a high-specced 7-seater SUV.

DRIVEN: Hyundai Santa Fe 2,2D Executive 8DCT AWD

The Hyundai Santa Fe is a product that blends into the backdrop of the large SUV segment due to it not having as much off-road focused tech compared to the likes of the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Toyota Fortuner or Ford Everest. That’s not to say that there isn’t a place for it in our market. Where the Santa Fe excels is in providing a more comfortable and leisurely large SUV experience.

Available with two powertrains, we sampled the 2,2D Executive 8DCT AWD which uses the brand’s four-cylinder turbodiesel mill to deliver an uprated 148 kW and 441 N.m of torque to all four wheels via an eight-speed dual clutch transmission. The new D4HIII VGT is 48 cc smaller than the oil burner it replaces. The cylinder block is now aluminium and the camchain has been swapped out for a belt. Ceramic glow plugs replace metal ones for a faster heat-up time on cold starts.
