The I LOVE Hummus thread

So .... besides mayo ... I do believe this is my favourate topping on my food. Eggs (though goes very well together with mayo at the same time). Smeared on top of pies or sausage rolls. Dip for boerewors.

Do any of you guys make your own? Is it very difficult and does it tase as nice as the store bought ones? If you make lots .... how long does it keep in the fridge cause I have noticed that the ones that you buy in the store does not keep that long. I normally finish it way before it goes off ... but left a almost full Meditarianian brand little tub for 2 days and then it started growing mold on top. :(

So ... who makes their own and is it easy and does it taste as nice as store bought?

I absolutely LOVE Humus, but have never tried to make it. Still, would be interested in learning how to make it!

But, still loved the taste of the Humus I had in Israel, never found it quite like that ever since!

Oh crap .. I mean .... oh ffs ... whatever ... will change it quick ... but normally the headline cant be changed :-(

Relax. We all know what you meant.

Looking at that recipe I think I must try this. I love chickpeas and sesame seeds.

The homemade ones also only last a few days but it lasts longer if you freeze it.
Just add a little more olive oil and mix well after defrosting.

Its chickpeas that have been pureed with a little olive oil, spice and herbs so it is easy to make.

Hummus is awesome. I seldom walk past Anat without ending up with a pita in my hand. I also use it at home on wraps and pitas.

I suppose I need to get a blender thingy? Sorry Shaun ... recipe is blocked on work PC so will need to check a bit later. I am guessing this works out a LOT cheaper also than buying in store ... specially the way I eat it? I normally put big fat blops on bread or sausage rolls ... so does not last very long with me.

Also, is Kosher better than halal? :p

I have actually checked .... and all hummus sold is both Halaal and Kosher stamps on it .... but do you really want to open that pandora's box here? :p

It is pretty much a middle eastern thing anyway ... so I cant argue against Hummus being Halaal and Kosher :-)

Coincidently just finished reading this article: Chickpeas: Slave-Food of the Monument Lords!

There's a recipe for hummus in there too Ock.

I made some (chickpeas, not hummus) from the dried stuff over the weekend, used it in a stew so I just soaked the peas overnight & added it to the simmering meat the next day. Yum!

Basic ingredients:

Chick Peas
Tahini
Lemon

I then blend it all together in the quantity I like and add juice from the chickpea can to get the right consistency.
Season with salt and pepper and other spices if you like.

I don't like to add Olive oil or if I do only a little.

mmm so not a good idea to make a big batch just in case.

Oh damn ...now that you mention it ... I have not had Anat for such a long time. Pity the closest one I know of is Rosebank Mall. I think I will make the trip this weekend.
