The iOS 11 Thread/Discussion

PSA: Now’s a good time to check which of your apps won’t open in iOS 11 as 32-bit support dropped

We reported back in June that Apple was dropping support for 32-bit applications altogether in iOS 11. In iOS 10, Apple displays a warning message and then allows the app to open; in iOS 11, the app won’t open at all.

But with some 187,000 32-bit apps still in the App Store – amounting to around 8% of the total – now would be a good time to check your own apps. It takes just a few seconds to do this …

The estimate of the total number of 32-bit apps still out there comes from Oliver Yeh, co-founder of app intelligence firm Sensor Tower, via Business Insider.

To check whether you currently have any 32-bit apps installed, go to Settings > General > About > Applications. If nothing happens when you tap Applications, you’re good. But if you have any 32-bit apps, they will be shown on the next screen.

It makes sense to check before upgrading to iOS 11, so that you have time to find replacements apps.

Apple is taking the stricter approach in iOS 11 because supporting 32-bit apps degrades the performance of the device. A 32-bit subsystem has to be loaded before the app will run, and that takes a hit on both performance and battery-life. The company has given plenty of warning to developers, so there’s little excuse for those which haven’t yet updated to a 64-bit version.

When I checked, I found three apps that could be deleted and one I’ll need to replace: PopCalc (suggestions welcome – I need multi-line displays and the ability to edit earlier calculations). Let us know how many you find.

Apple releases beta 8 of iOS 11, watchOS 4, macOS 10.13, and tvOS 11

Apple on Monday released the eighth beta of iOS 11, watchOS 4, macOS 10.13, and tvOS 11 to registered developers. The new betas come just a week after beta 7 and two weeks ahead of the anticipated iPhone 8 event, so it’s likely Apple is gearing up for a public release of the updates.

iOS 11 beta 8

If you’re a registered developer with a device already running a previous iOS 11 beta, you can upgrade to the latest build (15A5368a) over the air using the Software Update mechanism in the Settings app.

We’re installing iOS 11 beta 8 on our devices to hunt for new features, but in the meantime check out our video regarding beta 7 changes:

GauTimes and AlwaysOn don't work.

Any chance of nested/grouped (by app) notifications in iOS 11?

I'm considering going to iPhone for my upgrade, but the way notifications are all displayed individually at the moment is horrid. Just get this endless stream of single messages if there's been conversation going on, for example.

I got only 1, DecibelMeterFree, it's a app I hardly use anyway and I know that I'll easily find a free replacement, there are many.

I'll turn notifications on just to check for you.

Apple seeds beta 9 of iOS 11 and tvOS 11 to developers

Apple on Thursday seeded iOS 11 beta 9 to developers. The release comes just days after beta 8 of the software was rolled out, suggesting that either a significant bug or security issue was discovered, or that Apple is charging hard down the final stretch of beta testing in an effort to finish the update on time for public release next month.

If you’re a registered developer with a device already running a previous iOS 11 beta, you can upgrade to the latest build (15A5370a) over the air using the Software Update mechanism in the Settings app.

Given the short lead time between beta 8 and beta 9, we don’t expect many (if any) user-facing changes.

Tenth beta of iOS 11 is now available

Apple on Wednesday issued a tenth beta of iOS 11 (build number 15A5372a) for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch to its registered developers and members of the Apple Developer Program.

A new public beta, which has the same features as the developer-only iOS 11 beta 10 release, is also out for members of the Apple Beta Software Program. The new software has arrived six days following iOS 11 beta 9 and 24 hours following a tenth beta of tvOS 11 for Apple TV.

To install the update on your iOS device with an appropriate configuration profile (available for download through Dev Center), use Apple’s Software Update mechanism in the Settings app.
