Apple previews iOS 11.3: battery management, new Animoji, vertical ARKit, Business Chat & more

Apple today previewed some of the new features and enhancements coming to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch this spring with iOS 11.3, including a new battery health section, the ability to disable CPU throttling and adjust power management features, and much more.

“This spring, iOS 11.3 will deliver exciting new ways to experience augmented reality on iPhone and iPad, new Animoji on iPhone X and the ability to view health records in the Health app,” Apple said.

Battery & power management

As previously promised, iOS 11.3 includes outward-facing features that will make it easy for customers to see their battery health and adjust Apple’s controversial power management features to disable CPU throttling at will.

Available on iPhone 6 and later through the Settings → Battery section, you’ll now see your iPhone battery’s health and if it needs to be serviced. More importantly, this section will let you turn off the new power management feature which dynamically manages maximum performance to prevent unexpected shutdowns that was first introduced in iOS 10.2.1.

The aforesaid power management feature is available for iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Both features—battery health and power management—will be coming in a later iOS 11.3 beta release.

New Animoji

Animoji on Messages is getting a boost with iOS 11.3.

Apple is introducing a few new Animoji characters oke a dragon, bear, skull and lion for a total of 16 different 3D animal emoji that track your facial expressions.

“Animoji have been a hit with iPhone X users, who’ve used their voice and facial expressions to record and send Animoji messages and even create Animoji karaoke videos,” says the firm.

Animoji require the TrueDepth camera and Apple’s advanced A11 Bionic chip to capture over 50 different facial muscle movements and apply them on your chosen Anomoji.

Can’t wait to use the skull Animoji!

Unfortunately, the iCloud sync option for the Messages app wasn’t even mentioned, making us wonder if it was scrapped altogether following a brief appearance in one of the early iOS 11 betas.

ARKit enhancements

ARKit, Apple’s framework for building immersive augmented reality experiences on iPhone and iPad, has been available since the iOS 11 release, and now it’s getting even better. ARKit 1.5 in iOS 11.3 can turn posters, signs and artwork into interactive augmented reality experiences, among other enhancements.

According to Apple:

Using advanced computer vision techniques to find and recognize the position of 2D images such as signs, posters, and artwork, ARKit can integrate these real world images into AR experiences such as filling a museum with interactive exhibits or bringing a movie poster to life.

It’s also great that the view of the real world through the camera now has 50 percent greater resolution and supports auto-focus for an even sharper perspective.

In addition to horizontal surfaces like tables and chairs, ARKit can now recognize and place virtual objects on vertical surfaces like walls and doors. It can also more accurately map irregularly shaped surfaces like circular tables.

Business Chat

Announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference in the summer of 2017, a new Business Chat feature is finally coming to Messages on iOS 11.3. Like customer support features on Facebook Messenger, Business Chat lets users communicate directly with businesses right within the stock Messages app.

“With Business Chat, it’s easy to have a conversation with a service representative, schedule an appointment or make purchases using Apple Pay in the Messages app,” explains the firm. “Business Chat doesn’t share the user’s contact information with businesses and gives users the ability to stop chatting at any time.”

Business Chat will launch in beta and launch publicly with the upcoming release of iOS 11.3 this spring. Initially, the feature will support select businesses including Discover, Hilton, Lowe’s and Wells Fargo.

Health record integration

A new Health Records feature makes it easier for people to access and control of all of their health records and data in the stock Health app on their iPhone. Apple first brought health record integration in the Health app two years ago with iOS 10, but it was fairly limited.

Apple says that the new Health Records option in iOS 11.3 was designed to bring together hospitals, clinics and the Health app to “make it easy for consumers to see their available medical data from multiple providers, whenever they choose.”

If you’re a patient of a participating medical institutions, your medical information from various institutions will be neatly organized into one view within the Health app. What’s more, you’ll receive regular notifications for your lab results, medications, conditions and more.

Health Records data is encrypted and protected with a passcode.

Tidibits

Aside from the aforementioned major new features and enhancements, iOS 11.3 will bring several under-the-hood and changes, including the following perks:

Apple Music will soon be the home for music videos. Users can stream all the music videos they want without being interrupted by ads. They can also watch the hottest new videos, the classics or ones from their favorite artists back-to-back in new music video playlists.
Apple News now makes it easier to stay up-to-date on the most important videos of the day with a new Video group in For You, and improved Top Stories.
HomeKit software authentication provides a great new way for developers to add HomeKit support to existing accessories while protecting privacy and security.
Support for Advanced Mobile Location (AML) to automatically send a user’s current location when making a call to emergency services in countries where AML is supported.

iOS 11.3 availability

iOS 11.3 will see its public release sometime this spring.

It will release as a free software update for iPhone 5s and later, all iPad Air and iPad Pro models, the fifth-generation iPad, iPad mini 2 and later and the sixth-generation iPod touch.

The developer preview of iOS 11.3 is available to iOS Developer Program members at developer.apple.com starting today, followed by a public beta preview available at beta.apple.com.

Stay tuned to iDownloadBlog as we’ll be installing the developer preview as soon as it arrives, and putting together a quick video walkthrough of all the major changes and new features in iOS 11.3

Report: Apple to Delay new iOS Features Until 2019

Apple could delay the launch of new iOS features until next year. Instead, Cupertino will focus on addressing performance and quality issues this year, according to Axios.

In a new post, Axios explains:

Apple has shaken up its iOS software plans for 2018, delaying some features to next year in an effort to put more focus on addressing performance and quality issues, Axios has learned.

Why it matters: Apple has been criticized of late, both for security issues and for a number of quality issues, as well as for how it handles battery issues on older devices.

Among of the updates delayed until next year include a refresh of the iOS home screen and in-car user interfaces, and tweaks to core apps like Mail and Photos.

Apple typically announces new iOS versions in June at the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). A public iOS release follows in the fall alongside the release of new iPhones. More minor updates are released elsewhere during the year.

Last week, Apple announced iOS 11.3, which includes new battery tracking tools for older iPhones, the introduction of health records for Apple Health, new animoji, and more.

^ Interesting. A new home screen sounds interesting, but I think it is a good idea to rather sort out reliability and performance issues. Although I personally still prefer iOS to other mobile operating systems, I'm sad to say that it is not as stable as it used to be. I hope Apple can manage to get it back on track.

Yesterday a colleague with a iPhone 6 complained and just now a friend with a 5s as well. Since updating to the latest release their phones are super slow and laggy.
Oddly enough the first example given by both was the same, in Phone, when typing in a number it takes like 30 seconds for the first number press to register and when searching for a contact and you type in the first letter of the name, it doesn't jump to the name it actually scrolls threw all contacts till it reaches the name.
Any ideas, any way to roll back to a previous version? Both of them are ready to throw their phones against a wall.

Need to replace battery

That was the explanation they gave about a month back.

Rather slow than dead is the logic.

Don't have the link now but there is supposed to be a discount battery replacement programme

Yes thanks I know about the battery discount program, IIRC it's around R400 for a replacement.
But how will I be sure a new battery will solve this and that it's not simply iOS11 causing those older devices to be dog slow?

Because if it made the devices dog slow, Apple wouldn't have released it to those phones. My spare iPhone 6 plus is acting just fine.

A update, colleague with a 6 can get his battery replaced by iStore for R420, but my friend with his 5s isn't so lucky because their battery replacement discount program doesn't cover the 5s.

That sounds almost like an indexing issue that should fix itself after a day or two.

The 5S doesn't get the throttling thing anyway do the battery isn't the problem there.

So it's purely update related then but like I say give it a day or three it might solve itself.

I have the "disconnect from wifi and then LTE doesn't work" issue again on my iPhone 7+. Only noticed it today here at work, so will test when I am at home as well. I am running 11.2.1 and using a VC sim.

Switching airplane mode on and then turning it off again does fix the problem, but what a schlep.

This only happens when I connect to my Vodacom LTE Wifi device and it happens every time. Annoying AF.

Hi how do I block Unknown Numbers on iOS11? I've downloaded True caller but am still receiving calls from a call centre that just won't stop.

iPhones, unlike Android phones unfortunately, cannot block unknown/private numbers, even with Truecaller installed.

If the call centre calls get too annoying, you could use the "Do Not Disturb" function on your iPhone, only drawback is that you will only receive calls from numbers in your contacts list, so you might miss important calls.

Few videos on YouTube showing that if you create a new contact on your phone, with name "No Caller ID" and number "000-000-0000", and then block this number, you will not receive calls from private numbers anymore. I haven't tried this myself so don't know if it works...maybe give it a shot?

That battery explanation is so dumb. A day before I updated to the latest firmware. My phone battery was perfect.

Anyone elses Wi-Fi connection up to nonsense after the 11.2.6 update, I've tried forgetting the network, resetting the routing and changing between 2.4 and 5 frequency bands and still terrible.
