The iPad2 tips and tricks thread

Or he can cut an old card that came with the sim to fit the micro sim, put a a tape at the back to hold the sim from falling of and voila he can use it in any phone

haha true :) I wouldn't stuff that in an iPhone though, but rather a conventional SIM car tray thing like those at the back of a Nokia.

It might get jammed in an iPhone and it will not end well.. lol :p

I got an old SE w310 that I use my own made micro sim in, I just stick the micro sim in the phone and works perfect. No adaptors

I've done this too on a Nokia. You just have to line the chip up properly with the pins and clamp her down :D

Google docs doesn't work on its own on an ipad. You'll need an ipad app for that. It sucks.

It works on mine for wordprocessing (IOS 5.01). Just edited some word doc in Google Docs without much effort. Have another go.

Some advice please.

I managed to get standard sim cut to size today. Also got a mini sim converter. Now, how on the ipad to I check the balance of data bundle/airtime, please.

On iphone I use dialer to enter *100# or similar but on ipad there is not dialer.
I also am unsure of this but what I'm doing at the moment is going to settings- general - usage and then cellular data...tells you how much data you have used...I suspect I will have to reset the usage every time I load more data so I can keep tabs of it. Would be much easier to see how much I have left thou than how much I have used. HTH .

Color me sceptical, but I cannot see how such a simple piece of software can bypass the current (amperage etc) limitations on USB ports... :erm:

Just had a look on Wiki about USB and apparently with the right software a USB port can be told to concentrate up to 1.5A for charging devices and it mentioned something about all the way up to 1.8A as well. Data transfer is disabled when your PC is melting the cable with that current though.

I found a great free player that plays DIVX and XVID files without any problems and no pop ups.
Flex Player does the job and it is still free.
I can't get any links for the player since my work internet is blocking everything, but run a search on ITunnes.

I'm not sure who your service provider is but there are a couple of options available. You could try the SP website. Some, like 8TA, are even zero rated and not only let you check the balance but let you add bundles, buy airtime, etc.

Another possibility, which doesnt work on 8TA, is to go to settings > Mobile Data > Sim Applications and see what's in there. For 8TA there is a services button which as I mentioned is broken but maybe it works for you.

Can you roll back to a previous version of iOS? Or I just need a way to do everything through my 3G and not be so reliant on wifi as I am on the road a lot. If I jailbreak (I assume it is legal) will I be able to do everything through 3G?

You can IF you saved SHS blobs.

Otherwise no. Without SHSH blobs you can only restore to the most current version.

Jailbreak was made legal in the US June/July 2010. Can't remember exactly.
Apple says it voids your warrantee, but if you restore the phone to factory firmware nobody will ever know :)

But yes there are jailbreak tweaks that take away 3G limitations to be able to Facetime on 3G, download apps larger than 20MB, etc.

Thanks man, didn't save anything like that. Will just have to wait then.

@Bwana - Got a prepaid SIM, cut it up to size to fit in the iPad.

When you go to www.8ta.co.za you'll see there's a portal for iPads. I tried registering my SIM there - but it failed.

The 8ta rep took my details (SIM ID and ID number the SIM is registered on).

So far nothing.

Discovered something quite by accident yesterday evening.

When you make the icons "wobble" you can create subfolders for your stuff by dragging one icon on top of another.

The ipad will automatically create a folder for you to store more than two programs in.

I cleaned my ipad desktop up that way. Cool not to have it cluttered anymore :D

There's icons which'll refuse to be chained to a folder with other icons. You'll have to try it out.
