Isuzu in discussions on building next KB in SA

Isuzu Motors SA is in discussions with its Japanese parent company about the production of the next-generation KB bakkie in South Africa.
Michael Sacke, chief executive of the local division, said it was a critical time for the company because these discussions also coincided with the changes and succession plan for the Automotive Production and Development Programme (APDP).

“That is all in the mixing pot, and it’s quite important that we have clarity on that pretty soon,” he said.

The APDP expires in 2020 and an announcement about the new policy, which would run until 2035, was expected this year.

Isuzu’s KB bakkie was produced locally by General Motors until its disinvestment from South Africa last year. This resulted in Isuzu acquiring GMSA’s manufacturing plant in Port Elizabeth and establishing a new company in South Africa.

Sacke agreed that it would seem illogical if the replacement Isuzu KB bakkie was not produced in South Africa after Isuzu acquired GMSA’s plant, but stressed that producing the new bakkie would have to make business sense and it would also have to be competitive.

Could the mu-X be built in SA?

Isuzu recently launched the Fortuner-rivalling mu-X SUV in South Africa, which achieved 208 sales last month.

Sacke said the company's target was to achieve sales of between 1500 and 2000 units this year.

Sacke said Isuzu was not as strong as it needed to be in this lifestyle and leisure segment and needed to grow its presence there.

The mu-X is the only vehicle that Isuzu imports.

“Everything else on the truck and bakkie side is built or assembled in South Africa, so we are kind of unique in that respect,” he said.

Sacke confirmed that there was a possibility of producing the mu-X in South Africa, provided the company could build up sufficient volumes.

“If we can get enough scale here and it makes sense to invest, we could do that. We just have to get the scale here,” he said.

Sacke added that Isuzu SA had engaged with the consultants that were devising the replacement policy for the APDP and were generally fine with what had been revealed thus far.

Isuzu Concept X Revealed

Isuzu has revealed Concept X, two hardcore adventure vehicles based on the KB and 7-seater mu-X SUV.


Isuzu has a loyal following in South Africa with the KB bakkie being the brand’s front-runner in terms of local sales. However, Isuzu has also expanded its local offering with the recent introduction of the 7-seater mu-X SUV that competes against the likes of the popular Toyota Fortuner, Ford Everest and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.

The recent reveal of Concept X shows the offroading potential of both the KB and the mu-X, both featuring customised fenders, bonnet, bull bars, sports bars and platinum winches at the front and rear.

Both are powered by a 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine and the KB-based Concept X stands 5 500 mm long, 2 150 mm wide and 2 100 mm high with a ground clearance of 370 mm. Approach angle is at 49.7° while the departure angle is at 38.5°.

The Concept X mu-X stands 5 000 mm long, 2150 mm wide and 2 100 mm high with a ground clearance of 370 mm. Approach angle is at 49.7° with a departure angle of 37.3°.

Both vehicles feature custom TBS Racing 6-piston calipers with 390 mm full-floating discs at the front while TBS Racing 4-piston calipers with 355 mm full-floating discs at the rear. A 7-inch suspension lift with independent front and multi-link rear coil suspension and custom 60 mm remote reservoir shock absorbers are also fitted. Concept X rides on 20-inch wheels shod with Toyo Open Country mud terrain tyres.

Isuzu Motors back in full swing with new MU-X and KB bakkie - Here's a look at how many vehicles the brand has sold so far in 2018

In 2017 General Motors announced it was exiting the local market. Although Chevrolet has left South Africa, Opel and Isuzu have remained.

Opel has been committed to its message of "we're here to stay", with new models launched locally, an influx of capital courtesy of its new stakeholder, the Peugeot-Citroen group (PSA), and flogging hundreds of vehicles each month.

Isuzu relaunched as Isuzu Motors and purchased GM's light commercial vehicle operations in Port Elizabeth.

Isuzu Motors confirmed in February it would launch its first passenger vehicle here, the MU-X and the SUV arrived locally in May 2018.

Since January, Isuzu has sold 10 137 KB bakkies and a total of 367 MU-X SUVs since its launch in Juner. Take a look at their month-to-month sales further below for each vehicle.

Isuzu Motors South Africa told Wheels24: "Our Isuzu bakkie volume in the South African market has increased by 12.2% year to date versus the same period last year. In fact, the month of August represented our highest bakkie volume since January 2016.

"Our exports, which primarily comprise of Isuzu bakkies, into Sub-Saharan Africa are up by over 20% year to date versus the same period last year. While this growth is off a relatively low base, we see great opportunity to further grow our volume in these markets in the long-term.

"We only introduced our all-new SUV, the Isuzu mu-X into the domestic market just over three months ago, and so it is therefore too soon to comment on sales performance. We are however pleased with the visibility the vehicle has in the market place and the positive feedback we have received regarding its styling, features and capabilities.

"This provides a great initial foundation as we look to grow these volumes through their demonstrated reliability and the backing of our Isuzu dealer network.

"It is worth noting that year to date we continue to lead in the medium and heavy commercial segments of the South African truck market. In fact, we have led in these specific segments for five years in a row.

"Overall, given that Isuzu Motors South Africa only became operational from January this year, we are very pleased with our performance in the market. We will continue to partner with our dealers to build our brand and provide outstanding service to our customers."

Isuzu mu-X 3.0 4x2 (2018) Quick Review

Pricing and Warranty

Currently (September 2018) the Isuzu mu-X 3.0 4x2 sells for R568 000, which makes it the most affordable high-spec, 7-seater, 4x2 bakkie-based SUV. It comes backed with a strong 5-years/120 000 km warranty, which given Isuzu's sterling reputation for reliability, is unlikely to be called upon very often. Also included are; 5-years/90 000km service plan and a 5-years/unlimited km anti-corrosion warranty. Services are scheduled for every 15 000km/12 months.

Verdict

There's not much wrong with this new Isuzu. In fact, it does a lot of things very well, just like its Chevrolet-badged predecessor did. This is an exceptionally comfortable long-distance adventure machine that also promises excellent reliability and support from a growing network of Isuzu-specialist dealers. It may not be as refined or modern in some areas as its main rivals, but in many ways that ruggedness is appealing. It's likely to appeal strongly to consumers who are already fans of the Isuzu brand, but may ultimately find it an uphill battle to lure shoppers that are also considering the Toyota and Ford, simply because of its slightly dated drivetrain. Nevertheless, given its attractive mix of features (particularly on the infotainment side) and attractive pricing/warranty, the Isuzu mu-X is a vehicle we can easily recommend adding to a shopping shortlist.

Isuzu exec suggests brand is developing new small SUV

A senior executive at Isuzu Motors in India has suggested the Japanese brand is in the process of developing a small SUV to slot in under the MU-X.

Speaking to business publication Moneycontrol.com, Ken Takashima, deputy managing director and executive vice president at Isuzu Motors India, said the brand would not ignore increasing demand for smaller crossover.

“SUV demand is growing not just in India but across the world and the trend is expected to remain like that for some more years. Product development work [on smaller SUVs] is going on internationally and we are yet to decide if India should be one of the markets for it,” he said.

Takashima added he felt the brand could improve its product offering.

“As we go along we will consider what kind of products we should have next. In India, we are relatively new so we would like to brush up our current line-up as much as possible.

“We will be bringing out variations of our current line-up for the future. We feel we can do a lot more to improve ourselves in order to meet customer requirements product-wise,” he told the publication

Isuzu D-MAX (2018) Specs & Price in SA

Isuzu has updated its KB range of bakkies which is now named D-MAX, as it’s known in international markets. See details below…

Isuzu’s hardworking KB has received an update which includes a name change to D-MAX (which originates from Thailand) as well as a specification upgrade and the introduction of a new 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions for all LX models. A total of 30 Isuzu D-MAX derivatives are on offer in South Africa while 13 are locally produced for export at Isuzu’s production facility in Port Elizabeth.

"We are also delighted to introduce the all-new six-speed manual and automatic transmissions on the 3.0-Litre LX models that improve overall performance, efficiency and refinement when compared to the previous five-speed units, while building on Isuzu's proven reputation for reliability and durability," says Dominic Rimmer, Executive Technical Services.

Out with the old, in with the new

The changes to the D-MAX are most prominent on the LX derivatives (single, extended and double cabs) which are powered by a 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine with 130 kW and 380 Nm of torque. Styling changes include a new chrome grille design, sleeker L-shaped headlights (extended and double cabs gain Bi-LED headlights and daytime running lights) and restyled fog lamp bezels.

On the inside, the D-MAX in LX guise gains a soft-touch instrument cluster binnacle, a grain finish for the dashboard and door trims, piano black air vent grilles and window switches. The door handles, locking knob and air vent knobs are finished in chrome and the utility box lid now features the ‘Isuzu D-MAX logo’.

An 8-inch colour touchscreen infotainment system is fitted and offers Bluetooth and audio streaming functionality while also displaying the view from the rear view camera. A 9-inch Alpine infotainment system (from the mu-X SUV) is offered as an option and comes equipped with navigation, USB, Aux and HDMI ports while also being compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The big news, however, is the introduction of a new 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions which replace the outgoing 5-speed shifters. Gear ratios and shift action have been optimised to aid optimum torque delivery while improving fuel economy. The 6-speed automatic transmission has a sequential sports mode which allows manual gear selection which is useful for towing or while off-roading in conjunction with the Hill Descent Control (HSC).

More so, the ABS on all D-MAX LX derivatives are equipped with a Brake Override System (BOS) for the first time. The system restricts accelerator input if the brake pedal is applied simultaneously, thereby reducing stopping distances in an emergency.

Trailer Sway Control (TSC) is also included, complementing the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with Traction Control.

LX derivatives are fitted with a tow bar as standard and come with a maximum tow rating of 3.5 tons. Hi-Rider and LE derivatives can be optionally fitted with a tow bar and have a tow rating of 2.1 tons.

Revised lineup

There are a total of 16 single cab D-MAX derivatives on offer and Isuzu has now included new Dropside Base models which can either be had with a factory-fitted load deck or in Dropside configuration.

Dropside Base models are offered in 2.5-litre LEED Base or Fleetside specification with 58 kW and 176 Nm of torque. A high-spec 2.5-litre HO Fleetside Safety derivative with 100 kW and 320 Nm is also available and comes equipped with dual airbags, ABS, ESC and HSA (Hill Start Assist).

Extended Cab derivatives are offered as a 2.5-litre Hi-Rider or in 3.0-litre LX guise with either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. A 3.0-litre 4x4 LX manaul Extended Cab is also on offer.

Isuzu SA rebrands KB bakkie as ‘D-Max’ and tweaks range

Isuzu Motors South Africa has rebranded its KB, with the popular bakkie now adopting the D-Max badge on local shores, in line with international markets.

The local arm of the Japanese automaker furthermore says the range has been tweaked to offer “higher levels of specification, quality and efficiency”. The top-spec derivatives, meanwhile, gain what Isuzu describes as “a more luxurious execution”.

In addition, the high-spec 3,0-litre LX derivatives (130 kW/380 N.m) gain a new six-speed automatic transmission, replacing the five-speed versions used on the outgoing models. As in the MU-X, this cog-swapper includes a “sequential sport mode”.

These models furthermore gain a new chromed grille, along with new tapered chromed accents extending across the full length of the revised L-shaped headlamps. Inside, the LX models feature new soft-touch panels, “more attractive” grain for the dashboard and door trims, plus a piano black finish on the air vents and window switches.

An eight-inch colour touchscreen replaces the 6,5-inch version used in the previous model, while a new Alpine infotainment system (with a nine-inch screen and built-in navigation) is optionally available. Safety updates include the addition of a “brake override system” (which restricts accelerator input if the brake pedal is applied simultaneously) plus trailer sway control.

Some 16 single-cab derivatives are available (including new Dropside Base models), along with extended-cab models and double-cab variants.

“We are proud to announce the introduction of the enhanced Isuzu bakkie along with the adoption of the D-Max name for the Isuzu bakkie portfolio, this aligns us to the brand identity of the broader company and ensures that our product naming conventions are consistent with the global approach,” said Craig Uren, executive officer sales, service and marketing.

Pricing for the 30-model range kicks off at R246 200 fort the D-Max 250C Chassis Cab Base and tops out at R606 400 for the D-Max 300 4×4 Double Cab LX 6AT.

Isuzu KB gets new name in SA, and range expansion

Isuzu South Africa wants you to get acquainted with a new name: D-Max.

The KB badge is no more, and the locally-produced bakkie range will now be referred to as D-Max, in line with the rest world and the name change also coincided with a range expansion at the bottom end while upper models benefit from styling and spec enhancements and mechanical changes.

So what does D-Max actually mean?

It’s a bit on the complicated side. The name was first used on the 2000 model year Isuzu bakkie in Thailand, the D referring to that model’s so-called “Dragon Eye” headlights, although nowadays Isuzu feels that it might as well also stand for ‘diesel’, ‘direct injection’, ‘design’ and ‘durability’. Max apparently refers to Isuzu’s “maximum” approach to everything it does. We told you it was complicated.

Fancier finishes for LX flagship

3-litre LX derivatives get a nip and tuck inside and out, the range-toppers receiving a new chrome grille that appears to run into the headlights thanks to chrome elements that sit above the new projector-type LED headlights (not fitted to single cabs).

The LX models also get a more premium finish inside, highlights including new soft touch panels for the instrument cluster binnacle, along with a more “high-quality” grain for the dashboard and door trims and piano black garnishes.

A new 20.3cm full colour touchscreen with reverse camera replaces the 16.5cm unit fitted to the previous model, and Isuzu buyers can now also opt for the premium Alpine 23cm infotainment system offered on the Mu-X SUV, which also comes with satnav as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.

New gearbox for 3.0 models

The 3-litre range-toppers also get new gearboxes in the form of a six-speed manual that replaced the previous five-speed and a six-speed automatic option that recent debuted in the Mu-X. As before, the 3-litre turbodiesel engine produces 130kW and 380Nm.

LX derivatives have been given a safety boost too, with enhanced braking and the addition of Trailer Sway Control.

Range expanded to 30 derivatives

The Isuzu bakkie range is now officially vast enough to make your head spin, with the line-up expanding from 21 to 30 derivatives in total.

Many of the additions are at the ‘workhorse’ end of the range. Customers are now able to order their Base single cab with a flat load deck or in Dropside configuration. These versions can be ordered with either the 2.5-litre base engine with 58kW and 176Nm or, in the case of ‘Safety’ models, the high-output variant that pushes 100kW and 230Nm.

Do note that unless you go for the higher-spec ‘Safety’, the D-Max misses out on essential safety features such as ABS brakes, airbags and stability control. How it is even legal to put a heavy, rear-wheel-driven bakkie onto the road without ABS is a cause for huge concern, both for those in the vehicle and other road users who may be in its path.

Also joining the range is a new 2.5-litre (high output) Base double cab, that slots beneath the existing ‘Hi-Rider’ and brings the base price of the four-door range down to R332 500, but like the base single cabs this one is also missing essential safety features such as airbags and ABS. Unlike its signe cab equivalents, however, it does pack comfort features like aircon and an audio system.

All D-Max models are sold with a five-year/120 000km warranty and five-year/90 000km service plan.

Isuzu D-MAX (2018) Launch Review

Since becoming independent from (the now departed) General Motors, Isuzu South Africa has become a fully-fledged independently-operated subsidiary of the Japanese commercial vehicle brand. To align its product line-up with that of its mother company, Isuzu has now rebadged the KB model to the D-MAX. We headed off to remote parts of the Kruger National Park to spot as many of the Big 5 as we could in Isuzu's updated-for-2018 bakkie.

Our journey started with a stint behind the wheel of the top-of-the-range D-MAX 300 4X4 double cab LX 6-speed automatic, which of course features all of the range's bells and whistles. We traversed some tarred roads at first, but they quickly changed to endless, winding and picturesque gravel roads surrounded by wildlife and bushveld. Driving at a maximum speed of only 30 kph, we had plenty of time to inspect the D-MAX's revised interior.

The cabin panels are similar to those of the previous model, but soft-touch materials have been applied in a few areas, making the interior feel more car-like and comfortable. Other minor interior touches include the piano black air vent louvres, and grained inserts for the dashboard and door trims.

Meanwhile, the optional 9-inch Alpine touchscreen infotainment system is exceptionally intuitive to use. It comes with Navigation, auxiliary, USB and even HDMI ports, plus it's fully compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. And, just in case owners forget, there’s a D-MAX logo positioned on the dash to remind them that this is the revised (2018) version of one of South Africa's most loved and respected bakkie models.

Upgraded Interior

After spotting buffalo, elephants and even hippos we stopped at a river, where we were guarded by armed rangers. That would not have been a good time to spot lions, but thankfully we didn't see any of them! It also gave us an opportunity to inspect the exterior changes to the newcomer...

Outside, the changes are subtle but nonetheless noticeable, especially when one views the D-MAX parked side-by-side with the older version of the bakkie. Bi-LED headlights and daytime running lights are now fitted to the Extended and Double Cab derivatives and the fog light housings have been redesigned. The grille's chrome detailing is more distinctive, while at the back, the bakkie's tow bar is now integral to the rear bumper.

Interestingly, Isuzu conducted a development programme by testing the D-MAX extensively over local terrain and in conditions that users would typically encounter in the South African market. The resultant upgrades include a thicker, stronger load bay and a revised suspension setup.

On the road

The long-serving Isuzu KB has been described (in some circles) as a tad agricultural, usually in reference to its less-than-muscular turbodiesel powerplants. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing when one considers the market this bakkie's aimed at – one in which reliability is king.

D-MAX appeals to, well, yes, farmers as well as business owners who require a workhorse that can take the punishment of many miles travelling on uneven roads and rough terrain. The revised Isuzu's suspension has been tuned specifically for South African roads and conditions... and it shows. We travelled many miles through the Kruger (on almost exclusively gravel roads) and the bakkie felt quite at home in those conditions.

The cabin felt suitably well-isolated from any of the dramas that the bakkie's suspension had to deal with, but not at the cost of an involving driving experience. Plus, a new 6-speed gearbox is available in either manual or automatic. The D-MAX auto felt a little less torquey and this could be due to drivetrain losses or the fact that the vehicle had nothing more than delivery mileage on its odo'. Overtaking manoeuvres at speeds of over 100 kph in the auto version felt a tad strained, which created the impression that the bakkie might struggle to tow a caravan and haul full loads over hilly roads.

The manual version of the D-MAX 300, on the other hand, felt like it could exploit the full 130 kW and 380 Nm of the 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine. The gearchange is slick and although the gate seems a bit narrow, it feels more modern than some of its counterparts. The clutch action was positive and, although most of our driving was done in 4-High, we could negotiate tricky uphill gravel tracks at 1 000 rpm with absolute ease and control.

Accessories

Off-roading enthusiasts are renowned for fitting aftermarket paraphernalia to their bakkies. D-MAX owners, however, won’t have to dodge warranty officers if they go that route... Well, at least if they choose from a range of aftermarket accessories now available from 4x4 Megaworld!

These range from bull bars, upgraded lights, roof racks, (some very nifty) utilitarian canopies and a factory approved suspension kit, which increases the mud-plugging D-MAX's ride height without exceeding manufacturer specifications. All of these add-ons have been extensively tested, and, furthermore, the bumpers have even been crash-tested to ensure they conform with the strict safety regulations. An added bonus is that owners of older Isuzu models can now also head over to local dealerships to browse through a laundry list of factory-approved D-MAX aftermarket addenda.

Summary

The D-MAX demonstrates that Isuzu is here to stay – the re-badged, refreshed bakkie is just what the fledgeling company needed. It's exceptionally important to maintain consumer confidence and Isuzu has underlined that by improving the tried and tested KB in tasteful, but significant, ways.

It's only the beginning: Here's why Isuzu's mu-X is punching well above its weight

Toyota’s dominance of the South African bakkie-based SUV market predictably continued last month, but it was the margin between the second and third position which was most interesting.

In October 1178 South Africans took delivery of new Fortuners, with sales momentum having tapered slightly after Toyota sold 1345 of the seven-seater "Hilux" in September.

Ruffling some feathers

Those numbers still overwhelm all its rivals, with Fortuner comfortably outselling Ford's Everest by nearly four-to-one.

Ford suffered a similar retraction in Everest sales from September to October, with deliveries down by 17%. What has been very surprising, is the performance of a relatively newcomer to South Africa’s seven-seater rugged SUV market, Isuzu.

The Isuzu mu-X achieved a phenomenal percentage gain in sales last month, with its market performance improving by 370%. Volumes were up from 55 in September, to 259 in October.

Lucky number seven

It’s worth noting that mu-X’s predecessor, the Chevrolet Trailblazer, very rarely crested 100 units per month. In that context, the mu-X’s sales performance last month reinforces what many had long suspected.

At the launch of the Trailblazer in 2012, industry analysts were critical of attempting to introduce the Chevrolet brand to a segment dominated by Toyota.

There was simply no Chevrolet gravel-travel or bakkie brand equity within the general consciousness of South Africans and the feeling was that marketing the Isuzu mu-X would have been a far superior option.

Isuzu enjoyed an established report with South Africans, by means of its KB bakkie business, and leveraging that trust and awareness to market a seven-seater SUV version of the KB, appeared the obvious choice.

Isuzu much stronger

General Motors South Africa decided not to pursue the Isuzu mu-X strategy and the Trailblazer was an abysmal failure from its launch to eventual discontinuation. Buyers simply ignored it and even Ford's relatively older Everest was considered a better option in the marketplace. When Everest 2.0 launched, the Trailblazer had no hope.

What could have been achieved had mu-X launched here back in October of 2012 instead of the Trailblazer? Well, that is counterfactual projection, but the current sales data clearly supports the marketing vision of Isuzu being a much stronger brand locally than many had been aware of.

For MU-X to run within 25% of Everest volumes last month is deeply impressive and that was achieved with a relatively narrow range consisting of only two derivatives.

Toyota markets eight different Fortuner derivatives and Ford has a similar spread of eight Everest SUVs. If Isuzu can expand its local offering, with a more affordable trim level and smaller capacity engine option, other than the current 3.0-litre, there is every indication that their market share could increase.

In Australia, which is a comparable market to South Africa, the MU-X range is six derivatives strong. Tellingly, that offering does not include any engine variation, with Isuzu steadfast in its policy of solely powering the brand’s SUVs with a 3.0-litre engine, whereas most of its rivals offering a smaller alternative. Imagine what Isuzu’s sales potential would be with an MU-X range bolstered by 2.5-litre derivates?
