There is a new Jaguar F-Type coming, and while we all breathed a sigh of relief that Jaguar didn’t kill its sports car in an age where everyone wants a crossover, I’m not so sure this new one is an improvement style-wise over the original.

Really, the best outcome of Jaguar refreshing the F- Type is that now the best version of it is pretty affordable.

Of course, the F-Type can’t stay the same forever, and Jaguar felt the need to update it a bit. Gone is the manual transmission option, and there is only one V8 option, but what strikes me the most is the new face.

With the horizontal headlights combined with the air vents in the hood, I’m getting some strong Mustang vibes.

Now, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing as the Mustang is a very good car, but if I’m going to spend Jaguar money, I don’t know if I want Mustang looks.

But what if I told you you could spend Mustang money and get Jaguar style as well as three pedals on the floor?

The Ford Mustang starts at around $27,000 for the very respectable EcoBoost version, but V8 power will set you back around $36,000.

If you want any semblance of luxury like leather seats you are looking at $40,000 and that’s even before options.

It just so happens that there are plenty of very nice used F-Types with supercharged V6 and V8 power around that $35,000-$40,000 price point with fairly low mileage. As nice and loud as the V8 is, the sweet spot is really the V6.

Jaguar was aware of this and offered that car with a manual transmission and we found this to be the best of the bunch.

According to Autotrader, there are about two-dozen manual F-Types available starting at around $35,000 all the way up to what a fully loaded Mustang GT Premium would run you.



While pre-owned Jags may not be the safest bet for out-of-warranty running costs, now is a great time to check this excellent sports car off your bucket list.

In SA, the used price of F type are very similar, just that I am not sure do we have to take the used F-Type back to the dealerships for maintenance, I have not seen any independent mechanics for Jaguar.

A used V8 F-Type would be nice...

Jaguar took the covers off their refreshed F-Type sports car last month which also saw the F-Type R variant get a power hike to 575 hp (429 kW; 583 PS).

Sadly that means the F-Type R will be the top of the range offering and if you want an SVR, you will have to stick to the current generation offering.

Refreshed Jaguar F-Type: pricing for South African range revealed

The SA line-up has been rationalised from some 24 derivatives to just eight, with all manual models falling away (eight-speed automatic transmissions thus ship standard). The 250 kW P340-badged variants have also been cut, as have the SVR flagships.

The range kicks off with the P300 in R-Dynamic trim, offered in both coupé (from R1 188 140) and convertible (from R1 186 240) guise. These variants employ a turbocharged 2,0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine offering the rear axle an unchanged 221 kW and 400 N.m.

Next up is the P380 R-Dynamic (priced from R1 451 000 for the coupé and R1 449 200 for the soft-top), with its supercharged 3,0-litre V6 directing 280 kW and 460 N.m to the rear wheels. Then there’s the all-paw version of the P380, available in "First Edition" form and likewise in coupé (R1 590 712) and convertible (R1 584 512) body styles.

At the summit of the range you’ll find the all-wheel-drive F-Type R (R2 325 049 for the coupé and R2 323 449 for the soft-top), complete with a supercharged 5,0-litre V8 offering 423 kW and 700 N.m (up from the 405 kW and 680 N.m generated by the pre-facelift model). That’s enough, says the automaker, for a sprint to 100 km/h in 3,7 seconds (down four-tenths) and an electronically limited top speed of 300 km/h.

Should I buy one?

Nevertheless, the F-Type R remains a thoroughly likeable, deeply exciting car – even if it doesn’t look quite as good as it did before. And while it might not be as technically capable or as pure in its responses as the 992, so potent is its thuggish but charming sense of V8 character that it’d be the car I’d have.

Call me a philistine, but they won’t be making them like this for much longer.

Should I buy one?

Plenty of sports car buyers instinctively gravitate towards the top-of-the-line option, and this F-Type won’t disappoint them for overall usability or excitement. The car mixes the richness, refinement, high-speed stability and comfort of a fast GT with the driver reward of something smaller and more purposeful quite skilfully – and it’s that blend that a front-mounted engine allows it to deliver better than most differently configured rivals.

It’ll be interesting to find out whether this full-house F-Type is the pick of the facelifted range for those who don’t necessarily need the biggest and braggiest option, though, or whether that’s the new mid-range, rear-drive V8 model. The ‘R’’s handling accuracy and drivability might have been improved a little, but it remains a bit of a brute.

Meanwhile, the noises we’ve heard from Jaguar insiders suggest that less may be slightly more; and on those occasion and roads where this car just begins to feel like it’s got too much firepower for its own good, and might be more enjoyable if it wasn’t trying to be so damned fast, you can believe those noise might well be worth listening to.

Jaguar F-Type (2020) Specs & Pricing

Engine power

All engines are mated with an 8-speed Quickshift automatic transmission and the F-Type range starts with the 4-cylinder, 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with 221 kW and 400 Nm of torque. For more grunt, a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 with 283 kW and 459 Nm is also available.

An uprated F-Type R tops the range and now boasts outputs of 423 kW and 700 Nm of torque (previously 405 kW/680Nm). Zero to 100 kph is blisteringly fast at 3.7 seconds with a top speed of 300 kph.

The F-Type R’s chassis had been updated and rides on 20-inch, 10-spoke wheels in gloss black with a diamond-turned finish and features new adaptive dampers, springs, anti-roll bars and stiffer knuckles and ball joints to deliver improved agility.

All F-Type derivatives feature active exhaust systems which can be fitted as standard or can be had as an option.

A specially-appointed F-Type First Edition will also be offered for a period of 1 year from its introduction.

Jaguar has reportedly filed an application to trademark the “EV-Type” badge, leading to fresh speculation the F-Type could be replaced by an all-electric sportscar.

According to Autocar, the British firm made the application with the World Intellectual Property Organisation back in February (it is still listed as pending).

The publication says Jaguar is “actively considering an electric sportscar”, with the proposed badge an obvious reference to the much-celebrated E-Type.

Pricing! Refreshed Jaguar F-Type touches down in South Africa

The facelifted Jaguar F-Type has finally arrived in South Africa, with the local range comprising ten variants at launch.

Revealed towards the end of 2019, the refreshed F-Type boasts updated styling and more power for the V8-powered R-badged models. As before, it is offered in both coupé and convertible guises.

The local line-up has gained two derivatives, with pricing increasing slightly since Jaguar SA first announced how much the updated two-seater sportscar would cost. The range now starts at R1 243 000 and runs through to R2 422 700 (before options, of course). See full pricing at the bottom of this story.

SA has received three engine options, with the P300 model employing a turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. With 221 kW and 400 N.m on tap, this variant will hit 100 km/h from standstill in a claimed 5,7 seconds before topping out at 250 km/h.

Next up is the supercharged 3,0-litre V6 in the P380, offering 280 kW and 460 N.m. That’s enough, says Jaguar, for a 0-100 km/h time of 4,9 seconds and a maximum speed of 275 km/h. The six-cylinder powerplant is offered with the choice of rear- and all-wheel drive.
