The Linux versus Microsoft war is over

This war will never be over. Technology moves too fast for there to ever be a declared final winner.

The first one to successfully impliment a secure, lightweight, cloud-based (WAN or LAN), client side software independent and hardware independent OS will get my vote.

Gaming should move over to standardized home entertainment and media type systems. Not to endorse consoles but it would work better this way even if the PS4 comes with keyboard and mouse. (unless they get the OnLive type gaming systems going all over the world)

For everything else more specialized, they can stick with the less than 5% market share of whatever OS and hardware they need.

Pretty right there in the article. For example, I've just this past week taken Linpus Linux off 2 clients' netbooks to install win xp. Funny that both of them had android 'phones, but both wanted windows on their netbooks!

How many licensed Windows7 copies were sold again? I rest my case.

The next generation of Operating Systems will boot from the cloud. There will be nothing more than the Web Browser. Google Chromium OS is gonna be big, its just a bit early for its time.

And, to add, Micr$oft have realized this, thus their massive increase in development for IE, of which version 10 is pretty much close to being able to do that.

While I fully 100% agree with you. you cannot help but fear that this will never happen. Patents, and Anti-Competetive law (which is a big thing in Europe) will surely prevent the standardization of Operating Systems/Consoles etc etc.

We live in a capitalist society im afraid, and for better or worse, the above ideal just wont fit into this world.

Something that I would love is to have the Continuous Client implemented properly for the masses. the closest thing we have to this so far is the Motorolla Atrix 4G on Android.

Oh well, maybe when im 50 years old..

Not true. There is a choice for one, like on notebooks and when you buy a computer you may decline windows as the OS.

Yeah, but then you pay more (in most instances).
I do not use windows at all, and I have never been able to purchase a laptop without windows, without paying a penalty.
It is cheaper to buy with windows, then just trash it.

That is why there are so many copies of windows 7 "sold". Just marketing BS.

If you have an HP, Acer, Lenovo, whatever laptop chances are it comes shipped with Windows partly because Microsoft has strong partnerships with these companies and partly because its far easier for these companies to give you support if youre using M$ Windoze

And partly because those companies get kickbacks from microsoft.

Last 6 notebooks I bought for my staff I had a choice - and I chose W7.

With a 3GB cap, and limited web access in the majority of the world? It's a nice idea, but completely impractical. not to mention that companies who want their desktops to be secure will never go for it.

All our staff except the graphic designers now use linux as their operating system. Its brought down costs in the company and our staff are really enjoying their new environment. Due to security reasons we have made it company policy that no microsoft computers are to be allowed to be used where that computer has any access to any sensitive data. We have taken a leaf out of Googles books and banned them. We take our client information and security very seriously.

Microsoft is just too easy to turn over to client side attacks and with our company directly facing the Internet, this is the safest choice for us.

as an MS fanboy, I can accept that Linux plays the biggest part in underpinning industrial technologies and I think its great! But as the article states, MS holdes the desktop market and rightly so. I've tried too many times to switch to Linux and failed! Its always a hardware issue! can't get the graphics card to work correctly - EVER!. let alone triple monitor... whatever the case drivers or stupidity, MS does it out of the box! no mess no fuss! and Yea yea, I know some users of Linux gets things all 100% working from a fresh install - i'm not so lucky, and so it would seem every single pc in my household!. I'd really like to try Linux and get to know it, but if I'm going to bang my head at every turn of getting things setup just right... Sorry no! Linux can stick to the mobile and industrial side of things.... MS does it just right!

Yes, I never said there wasn't a choice. I said that you are usually penalised for NOT going with microsoft.
I ask, everytime, and it always costs more to purchase without microsoft, due to the kickbacks the manufacturer gets from microsoft.
