The Linux versus Microsoft war is over

OOo was fine when we had MS Office 2003, but I can't live without the ribbon anymore, it makes everything much more...accessible imo.

They both have their places

Without a doubt the race/war will never be over. Each platform has its place. Linux/Unix is there is for your sturdy web server or database server and Windows is there a a personal OS and Server environment OS. Ever tried setting up and looking after a Linux environment with share permissions, user account, mail, file etc etc. Its a pain in the ass. Then you get windows server which is click click click click, permissions, users, file all done. I use both Windows and Linxu (mainly Centos and Fedora) in my environment which work great in fact i use Endian firewall at my home office and my work office and a have a IPSEC VPN between the two. Basically both platforms have their places.

NetApplications, for example, reports that Windows accounts for almost 90% (89.58% to be precise) of the global operating system market share. With 5% of the remaining portion being taken up by Apple, there is a scant 5% remaining for everyone else. Among them is Linux with just shy of a 1% share.

No comments required. I love my Android too :)

Both OS's have their pros & cons.
It's true that there are more Windows users than Linux users,
But that's because in a piracy filled world they are both free for most.

The day that windows becomes truly un-copyable is the day linux gets the respect it deserves & the scales will tip dramatically.

Peace "B"

I doubt it is piracy keeping windows alive.

Windows apps and gaming keeps it alive because you cannot run certain apps on linux and you cannot run majority of the new games released. I would not put windows domination down to piracy.

I can see a certain amount of value in his statement as the games and application developers will follow the market and if the market runs Linux they will follow.

As a few have said in this thread, what it all really boils down to is the end user.

You are all going to end up doing exactly the same things, just in slightly different ways.

Now you have to ask yourself which OS allows you to do what you want with the least amount of fuss. I am a Windows 7 guy through and through, I have tried my hand at Linux and I am definitely not a novice at computers but I just find myself giving up due to boredom / realisation that an OS is what you make of it.

There is no war.

How many companies do you think want to get into the free market?

Free market I would say everyone wants a free market. Or do you mean a market where software is free?

If its the latter games dont have anything to fear, as open source games tend to take long to mature and can not compete with Dedicated teams controlled with a single purpose.

Application software on the other hand will have issues if you release crap. Plenty of decent quality software have no problem making a living selling products already on Linux, some even with dual licensing options, free for individual not free for corporates.
