The Lynk & Co Thread

Lynk&Co launches its second motor for Europe, the all-electric 270-mile 02

Prices for the five-door EV start at under £30k, but best call it the 'Zero-two' or folks might think a certain mobile provider is making cars

Hail Lynk&Co’s newest effort for Europe. This is the all-electric 02 with over 270 miles of range as standard. Known as the Z20 in China, the Zero-Two’s prices start at an attention-grabbing £29,719 (€35,495).

So what does that get you? A sleek, inoffensive-looking crossover coupé. It's roughly the size of the Skoda Elroq (4.4m by 1.8m) and like its Czech rival, is looking to compete with the VW ID.3, the Peugeot e-3008 and the Renault Scenic.

The rear-wheel-drive EV - built on Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) - features a 66kWh NMW battery, capable of 268bhp and 253lb ft torque. It recharges from 10-80 per cent in a half hour using a 150kW charger and is good for about 276 miles. That isn’t as much as its rivals – the Elroq’s official range is 347 miles and the Scenic supports 170kW power delivery – but the 02 likely trumps the others where digital connectivity is concerned (more on that in a bit).

You'll spot the minimalistic front end with a barely-there, sensor-laden grille and front LED headlights offering ‘welcome’ and ‘goodbye’ projections. Those inoffensively soft body lines head back towards the rear spoiler – the only angular thing on the whole package – which houses rear lights that span the width of the car and border the coupe-sloped rear screen. The 02 comes in red, white, grey or blue. apparently a metallic paint job isn't going to cost extra and the high-gloss black contrast roof features a pano roof.

Zeekr takes the reins of Lynk & Co

The premium electric vehicle subsidiary of Geely Holding Group, Zeekr, is set to acquire a 51% stake in Lynk & Co. This acquisition, announced on November 14, 2024, will allow Zeekr to take control of the innovative car brand that was initially a joint venture between Geely Auto and Volvo Cars.

Lynk & Co was founded in 2017, and it made a name for itself with its unique, subscription-based approach to car ownership. With Zeekr at the helm, the brand will enter a new phase of growth and development, fully immersed in the growing EV market.

The deal is valued at approximately €2.25 billion and involves a series of transactions. Zeekr will acquire a 20% stake from Geely Holding for €451 million and a 30% stake from Volvo Cars for €694 million. Geely will hold the remaining 49%. Zeekr plans to fund this acquisition through its own cash reserves and external financing.

This acquisition reflects a broader trend within the Geely Holding Group to streamline its operations and focus on the rapidly expanding New Energy Vehicle market. As part of its "Taizhou Declaration," announced on September 1, Geely wants to reduce internal competition and promote resource integration. The acquisition effectively puts all of Geely's EV efforts under the Zeekr brand, leveraging Zeekr's technological expertise and market position.

1. The previous Lynk and Co was not good at all. Drove it for a week, would never buy one. Ironically similar to a Volvo but worse in every way.

2. Volvo needs to join its competition in Europe and bring back ICE for as while. EV uptake is slow, and those Volvo turbo petrols and diesel engines were sublime and very reliable. They need to bring it back. But problem is Geely is prob shoving them elsewhere and will push to keep Volvo fully EV along with what they're planning with Zeekr.

Lynk & Co 02 range test

Lynk & Co is another brand of Geely and Volvo, which is quickly gaining popularity in Europe and some parts of Asia thanks to the aggressive pricing and well-equipped cars. The brand utilizes proven tech and know-how from its parent companies, which eases any reliability concerns.

Today we are testing the Lynk & Co 02, which is the brand’s first electric crossover. It sits on the SEA2 platform, shared with many other Geely products. We already conducted a range test of the more powerful Volvo EX30 Performance, so now we’ll see how the single-motor RWD version performa in the Lynk & Co 02.

The Volvo didn’t get very good results in terms of efficiency, but impressed with power and driving dynamics. We have our hopes that the Lynk & Co 02 will be the more sensible choice and prove itself as a more utilitarian vehicle.

A dedicated review is coming soon, but let’s focus on how the Lynk & Co 02 does in our range test. We drove our usual test routes, doing the same track both ways at constant speeds at the same place as with every other car we test. The ambient temperature was 11°C. This is slightly colder than ideal, meaning that the Lynk & Co 02 will be capable of improving its results with better weather.

At our lowest testing speed of 60 km/h the Lynk & Co 02 doesn't quite shine as an efficiency champion, but still achieves better results than the Volvo EX30 Performance. The Lynk & Co 02 has a huge weight to carry around and that makes the motor use above average energy even at low speeds. The on-board systems are not as efficient as some rivals but the result is still solid.

Lynk & Co 02 review

Verdict

Lynk & Co is a newcomer brand that succeeds from the get go by leveraing the know-how of its parent and sister companies and ends up with an appealing product. Its first fully electric vehicle is a no-nonsense model that does exactly what you want it to and at a great price too.

The 02 is primarily aimed at daily city driving, where it really shines. But even if you need to take on a longer ride it won't disappoint. The overall package that is the Lynk & Co 02 is seriously capable and its warm reception is therefore hardly surprising.

A key advantage is pricing, which combined with the many virtues the 02 has, makes it truly appealing even in this crowded segment.
