Whether under a multi-million contract with Manchester United or Real Madrid at the time - and Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson has indicated the Spanish club's overtures will only materialise over his "dead body" - world's soccer's most talked-about footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo, will not be coming to South Africa for the Vodacom Challenge warm-up tournament next month.
This was announced on Thursday by chief executive, David Gill, who also confirmed that none of the other United players participating in Euro 2008 or South American World Cup qualifiers would be making the trip to Africa for pre-season friendlies in South Africa and Nigeria.
Other notable luminaries who will also be missing from matches against Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates include the dazzling Argentinian international Carlos Tevez, Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sa, Brazilian playmaker Anderson and Portuguese midfielder Nani.
Gill was non-commital about the appearance of United's Wayne Rooney, commenting that it would "all depend on his fitness - and whether it was advisable to extend his mid-season break."
Other English internationals like Rio Ferdinand, Owen Hargreaves and Wes Brown seem likely to be included in the United touring party. - Sapa
Ronaldo has agreed a contract with Real Madrid worth £150,000 a week, according to the club's mouthpiece Marca.
The Spanish newspaper claim that the Portugeezer has decided to commit himself to Madrid for the next five years and will move as soon as an official bid is accepted by Manchester United.
Ronaldo made it clear in an interview with Brazilian newspaper Terra that he wants the move and says he will not comment on the subject again until after Euro 2008.
He is reported to have made it clear that he will not welcome a visit from Sir Alex Ferguson after the Scot said that they would rather see Ronaldo in the stands than sell to Real Madrid. Those comments appear to have strengthened his resolve to leave.
There seems little doubt that if Madrid put their money where their mouths are and offer a world-record transfer fee, United will have little choice but to accept the bid and spend the money on replacements.
But this 'news' from Marca emerges on the same day that Ronaldo's mother - always thought to be a motivation behind a move to Madrid - appeared to suggest that he should stay in England.
She is quoted as telling TV1: "He is happy where he is. Only God knows the future, but what is certain is that he will continue in England."
150k a week....I hope we get a lot of actual money for him. Less than 50 mill will be a joke.
i can see MU getting 100mil from RM, they did say they can afford it. maybe they can push it to 120 ?
Man, that is going to be a lot of debt for the city of Madrid!![]()
100million pounds cash...nothing less.
