Regardless of whether or not he was offside, you simply cannot wait until the team has completed celebrating the goal to decide that the player was offside. The decision should have been immediately when Ronaldo got the ball. Pathetic. Everyone says it's touch touch. Surely the players should get the benefit of the doubt in such millimetre decisions. Great through ball from Giggs. Great finish by Ronaldo. Poor linesman decision.
Replay was indecisive. It was a touch and go decision and everyone will attest to that. It's hard to know for a fact if he was offside or not. The linesman stood still until way after the goal to decide that it was offside. The decision should have been made instantly. Everyone has been saying that as well. How you can not know if Giggs touched the ball? Giggs gave him a through ball. It was as clear as day... Apparently not to anti-Man United people.

Ferguson said he was confused by Cristiano Ronaldo's belatedly disallowed goal in the emphatic win at Pride Park.

Giggs discusses the disallowed goal with referee Alan Wiley
Ronaldo raced clear to score but the assistant referee flagged offside after learning from the referee that Ryan Giggs had flicked the ball on.
"I got an explanation but I'm not sure whether it works," said United's boss.
"It should've been given straight away. Our keeper threw the ball so he was off [whether or not Giggs touched it]."
That Sir Alex Ferguson could get so agitated with officials for ruling out a goal when his team were leading 1-0 and then turning the screw in a fashion that suggested there was more to come was curious, even for those who admire the Scot for his constant pursuit of perfection. But the devil was in the detail.
Cristiano Ronaldo had just run on to a flick-on from Ryan Giggs and buried the ball past Stephen Bywater in the Derby goal; it was the moment Ferguson's masterplan had come to fruition and it was ruined by the assistant referee's late, late flag.
Controversy erupted in the 37th minute with Ronaldo's disallowed goal. Foster threw the ball forward to Giggs, who flicked it on for
Ronaldo, who had only Bywater to beat. Ronaldo looked across at referee's assistant Paul Tierney, whose flag was not raised, before applying an assured finish into the net and turning to celebrate with his United team-mates.
But the celebrations were cut short when ref Alan Wiley disallowed the goal. The explanation given was that Tierney had not seen Giggs touch the ball and, once Wiley had confirmed the United midfielder had, raised his flag for offside.
Controversy raged five minutes later when United thought they had scored a second. Quick thinking from Foster resulted in his arrowed throw finding Giggs on the halfway line. The Welshman flicked the ball onto Ronaldo, who burst past the Derby defence - route one football at its finest.
Ronaldo looked across to find the linesman’s flag down, and calmly slotted his shot past the keeper and into the corner. But, amazingly, deep into the Red Devils’ celebrations, an offside flag did appear.
For the following minutes, United’s players and management berated the officials, bemused as to why the ‘goal’ had been disallowed at such a late stage. The offside decision was marginal, fourth official Rob Styles eventually explaining the delay was due to the linesman not being sure over whether or not Giggs had indeed made contact with the ball.
Goggles??Your half-time presentation in SA consists of a guy sometimes wearing a Manchester top commenting on a manu game lol.Commentry in SA is pretty sh*t at best compared to the analysis given during the half-time in the UK.All the alleged UK commentators said so... ya sureAnd I suppose by that you mean the UK commentators that we heard know nothing about football hey? And all the local commentary here in SA also know nothing about football hey? Time to take the goggles off

The linesman clearly does not know how to rule. It does not matter whether or not Giggs touched it. If Ronaldo was offside, regardless of who passed him the ball, then the linesman should have flagged immediately.

How many times must this line be used "LEARN THE OFFSIDE RULE"Cannot believe this is still a 'debate'.
The call was marginal. Advantage to the attacker if it is a close call. Linesman waited an age to make the decision, which was arguably incorrect with or without Giggs' flick.
Either way, 4-1 win. On to the quarters![]()
“Neverthless, Ronaldo was in an offside position. I have no complaints about the actual decision.
Ferguson must also be wearing goggles:

The flick was the difference between it being onside and off-side.
Pretty easy draw by the way, I think the only test for manchester will come in the semis.
