Mazda to drop turbocharged petrol engine into CX-5 – report

A fresh report out of the United States suggests that Mazda is preparing to offer its CX-5 with a turbocharged petrol engine.

Currently, the Japanese crossover’s engine line-up includes a pair of naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol units (in South Africa, the 2,0-litre generates 121 kW and the 2,5-litre makes 143 kW) and a single 2,2-litre turbodiesel.

But, according to a certification document from the California Air Resources Board uncovered by the folks over at The Truth About Cars, the brand has started testing a CX-5 fitted with the turbocharged 2,5-litre petrol mill that is employed by the CX-9 offered in some markets.

In the CX-9 in Australia, this forced induction 2,5-litre is worth 170 kW and 420 N.m, and is mated to a six-speed torque converter automatic transmission as standard.

Interestingly, the refreshed version of the Mazda6 revealed late in 2017 also gained the 2,5-litre Skyactiv-G turbocharged petrol unit, in this case tuned to deliver 186 kW and 420 N.m.

Hi guys,
I'm loving my CX-5 but I find the MZD Connect infotainment system quite limited. (Note - after putting down R7k for their GPS app - which is a pimped up version of HereWeGo Maps on a normal SD card - I found that I still have to pay roughly R1k a year if I want live traffic updates. This is standard process for BMW, Audi and the likes, but an unpleasant surprise for me)
I've seen press releases in recent weeks that Mazda Australia and Europe are planning a retrofit accessory that will enable Android Auto and Carplay on all Mazda's that have MZD Connect. Don't know what that's going to cost and Mazda SA aren't saying much about whether it's coming here.
I also know that the older versions of firmware can easily allow for Android Auto to be uploaded by USB, however on the newer firmware\models you need to establish a cabled serial connection to a laptop.
Has anyone on this forum done this? (lots of tutorials online) - I'm just worried about breaking something and voiding the warranty.
I've spoken to the dealership about it, who have no issue with the fact many older models come for services with Android Auto having been installed, but they're not very clear with me on what happens from a warranty perspective if I cook something. Also worried, given how various cars burst into flames in SA.

Should not have paid for the navigation sd. Its a waste of money.

I love the MZD, it's fast hackable and official Android Auto is coming. Once the firmware leaks it's game on who cares what Mazda SA says.

I've done the AA hack, its child's play took 2 minutes tops just follow the guide exactly and make sure you're not on the brand new firmware version that requires serial connection.

I use AA daily and it's just fine. If official AA never comes it's a perfectly fine alternative.

I've taken in my car for services with AA on, they've given me zero hassles

You mind me asking if you extended your warranty and service plan and with whom. Every where i see online the 3rd party plans are pathetic on hellopeter, i.e. Innovation, etc.

My problem is that my car came with the latest firmware version, meaning that I’ve got to use the serial connection option.
That’s why I’m asking if anyone’s actually done it using serial.
Saw some posts online where guys wound up literally burning out the cable that connects the MZD to their laptops.

Nope did not extend but mine came with 4years unlimited instead of 3, was a special at the time

You don't need to extend it, these cars are bulletproof.

I wouldn't make the effort to do the serial hack. AA will be here next month hang tight you have Nav and AA isn't that much better than MZD. I sometimes prefer MZD over AA for some things. My wife uses MZD over AA exclusively, says AA is distracting.

Ok thanks, how much does a normal service cost and also a major service.

Better to service out of pocket or service plan, Innovation was like 13k for 2 years.

I paid R2100 for my first one out of plan at the dealership. You should do enough km to get your major under the service plan unless you drive very little.

Thanks, I'm looking at a 2016 model with about 50k km on it. Is the major service on 90km.
Which model do you have?
I'm torn betweeen the Individual Auto diesel and the Akera, but I can't see any difference between the two tbh.

I have the 2L Dynamic. Test drove the diesel individual and wanted it so badly but it was too expensive at the time had to compromise since it was basically for the school run.

Isnt the Akera 4wd but the Individual 2wd. Who cares they're both fantastic and loaded with extras can't go wrong with either unless you want it for offroad stuff i guess

Nice man. The demo used cx-5 are flying like hot cake in CT. The dealers say they don't stay long on the floor. I've looked at different SUV's, but they don't have the look or all the extras you get from Mazda.

Price is the defining point though, spending 300k-350k sounds really abit much. I'm tired of manual cars, so it will definitely be an auto.
Most bargains are up country compared to the cape and spending 5k on bringing it down is another story.

Interesting. And good to know. Thanks!
Where did you hear that AA is coming here next month? My dealership is clueless and so is Mazda SA on FB when it comes to AA.

6th of August for Europe. The firmware will leak and I'm sure we'd be able to flash it. Or we can wait till Australia gets it, we have the same firmware region ADR.

So Europe has set a date 6 Aug and Australia set "before the end of the year." If Mazda SA doesn't respond then just flash the firmware.

If I'm not mistaken the guy running Mazda SA used to run Aus(EDIT: I see that he has been replaced) so surely he is aware of that announcement. We will have our AA long before Christmas is my guess.

Guys I'm torn between the Mazda CX-5 2016 2..2 Diesel auto Akera and the 2016 Individual Petrol Auto 2.5L

Any reason I should choose the one over the other in terms of pros and cons, i.e petrol vs diesel, more fun to drive, off road, features or overall better then the other.

Is the 2.5 petrol automatic heavy on fuel?
Features seems to be identical or did I miss anything

Would appreciate your feedback guys.
