The Mazda CX-5 Thread

Any colour for me!

As long as it's white or silver...

Edit: and I cannot for a second imagine that the Soul Red will age very well. I've already seen ones with some serious scratches and the darker hue of red make them stand out even more.

Soul Red for me. Properly striking! My only issue visually is the tiny (functional) rear lights.
I've got the MY15. My son always says Mazda should've taken the front of the MY17 and the rear of the MY15 together, because that behind is way too big for those small lights

Mazda SA gives CX-5 mild update (but new turbo isn’t there)

Mazda Southern Africa has announced a handful of light interior and exterior updates for its popular CX-5 range, but the new turbocharged 2,5-litre petrol engine confirmed for the Japanese market back in October 2018 unfortunately isn’t on the cards.

So, what has changed? Well, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are now standard on all derivatives (interestingly, Mazda SA furthermore says an accessory kit can be retrofitted to any Mazda2, Mazda3, CX-3 or CX-5 model with a factory-fitted MZD Connect System), while the cabin gains new patterning on the air-conditioner panel and redesigned commander and volume controls. In addition, fresh chrome accents have been added to the side mirrors and window trim.

The 17-inch alloy wheels offered on the Active derivatives gain a new colour, while Dynamic models benefit from a new 19-inch wheel design.

The make-up of the local eight-strong CX-5 range is unchanged, with engine options again including a naturally aspirated 2,0-litre petrol unit (121 kW/210 N.m), a free-breathing 2,5-litre four-cylinder petrol mill (142 kW/257 N.m) and a 2,2-litre turbodiesel (140 kW/450 N.m). Front- and all-wheel-drive variants are offered.

In Japan, the forced-induction 2,5-litre engine delivers 169 kW at 4 250 r/min and 420 N.m at 2 000 r/min.

Mazda CX-5 Enhanced for SA

Mazda has updated its CX-5 family car with specific specification updates across the range. See what’s changed below…

The Mazda CX-5 has received a mild round of updates across its 8-derivative lineup. In terms of specification, all CX-5’s are now equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard.

Other new interior details include a new air-conditioner panel pattern while the door and window dials now feature chrome accents. The commander dial and volume controls have also been redesigned.

On the outside, CX-5 Active derivatives now ride on 17-inch wheels with a new colour while the CX-5 Dynamic derivatives are fitted with newly designed 19-inch alloy wheels. The specification for the range-topping Individual derivatives remains unchanged.

A total of 3 engine choices are on offer including a naturally-aspirated 2.0-litre petrol engine with 121 kW and 210 Nm while a larger 2.5-litre petrol engine with 143 kW and 257 Nm is offered in all-wheel-drive guise. A 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine with 140 kW and 450 Nm is also available in either front or all-wheel drive guise.

Buyers also have the choice between a 6-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmissions.

Mazda’s CX-5 gets spec upgrade for 2019

Mazda’s Rav4-rivalling CX-5 SUV has been given a spec upgrade for 2019, the models gaining minor interior enhancements and new alloy wheel designs.

The highlight here is that Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are now standard on all models. Other cabin improvements include additional chrome accents, and a new look for the control panel as well as volume and commander controls.

On the outside, the 19-inch alloys fitted from the Dynamic grade upwards get a new design, while the 17-inch alloys on the Active have been re-coloured.

As before the CX-5 is offered with a choice of 2.0-litre (121kW) and 2.5-litre (143kW) normally aspirated petrol engines and a 140kW 2.2-litre turbodiesel. A six-speed automatic gearbox is standard on most derivatives, but optional on the 2.0 Active and Dynamic, which unless otherwise specified, ship with a six-speed manual.

Priced from R392 400, all models are decently appointed, with even the base 2.0 petrol and 2.2 diesel Active models sporting dual-zone climate control (with rear vents), push-button start, cruise control and a six-speaker infotainment system paired with a 17.8cm screen, which is also linked to a reverse camera.

The 2.0 Dynamic (starting at R418 200) adds extras such as leather seats, with eight-way electric adjustment for the driver, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

In addition to all that, the Individual (priced from R487 900 in 2.0 FWD form and R552 000 if you want it as a 2.5 all-wheel-drive) gains navigation, a Bose 10-speaker audio system, automatic tailgate, Head-Up Display, Blind Spot Monitor, Lane Keeping Assist and auto-braking.

At the top of the pile is a 2.2 diesel Akera AWD, priced at R579 900.

Hi all. I'm new to the Mazda brand. Visited a dealership today and was really impressed with the new CX-5 2.0 Dynamic Auto.

How is the resale value on these cars in general? I'm trying to decide between this and the New RAV4 when it's out

SA car sales: Compact SUVs continue to push Mazda's monthly figures

Mazda South Africa has quietly been reaching good sales figures each month. The Japanese automaker Mazda kicks off 2019 with a stellar month of 1243 passenger cars sold in January, according to the latest Naamsa figures.

The CX-5 is the brand's flagship model and also its top-volume seller with 408 units sold during the first month of the year. The smaller CX-3 is hot on its tail with 363 units sold.

The Mazda2 sold 249 units while the larger Mazda3 saw 216 units sold.

The sporty MX-5 is still a firm favourite in SA with the little sports car finding seven new owners.

Resale? You're not going to want to sell it, ever.

If you don't believe me ask any CX-5 owner.

I like the sound of this! I was honestly so impressed with the interior, really premium feel. And quite excited about the inclusion of android auto.

I comparison with the Rav4, the base is expected to be R430k. And that's just the base. Something nice will probably set you back closer to half a million.

Have anyone changed their tyre size from the uncommon 225x55x19 to the maybe a wider tyre. This might have issues when you need to replace a tyre when you in the middle of nowhere.

The original Toyo A36 have about 30% thread on the rear with mileage at 55k. Was looking at 255/50/19 on the 7J rim as someone from Supaquick advised me as it was won't damage the gearbox or wear out the gears, since I'm driving a 2.2 auto diesel. The 235 or 245 was not going to cut it. Only issue would be the the tire would be 15mm closer to strut/brakes.

Would really appreciate fellow cx-5 owners or tyre experts.

Does Mazda SA sell the CX-5 in ANY other colour besides metallic red, as this is the only colour I have ever seen them in.

Even saw a few car transporter trucks on the N3 to Durban & back in November last year & ALL the CX-5's on them were the same metallic red colour as well.
I've got a white one, but that soul red is beautiful to look at, especially with tinted windows. Most of the colours are great (not a fan of the green/blue)

My problem is that my car came with the latest firmware version, meaning that I’ve got to use the serial connection option.
That’s why I’m asking if anyone’s actually done it using serial.
Saw some posts online where guys wound up literally burning out the cable that connects the MZD to their laptops.

Retrofitted with AA and Carplay is R3k for the dealer to do it with labor and parts, yes its expensive, yes you could do it at home but to mess with your potential warranty on a new car is that really clever? I just had it put in my 2018 CX5 Akera and it was painless, except for the bill. But Waze is going to be better than the onboard Nav for sure, the only thing is, it doesn't integrate with the HUD, so when you lose the standard NAV SD card, you lose the speed limit indicator and the HUD NAV, which is a bit annoying.

Guys I'm torn between the Mazda CX-5 2016 2..2 Diesel auto Akera and the 2016 Individual Petrol Auto 2.5L

Any reason I should choose the one over the other in terms of pros and cons, i.e petrol vs diesel, more fun to drive, off road, features or overall better then the other.

Is the 2.5 petrol automatic heavy on fuel?
Features seems to be identical or did I miss anything

Would appreciate your feedback guys.

I can't really speak for the 2.5L petrol, I didn't manage to get to test drive it, I drove 3 2.0L's and decided that the lack of power wasn't for me and I had all but moved on from Mazda (the Hyundai Tucson 2.0L wasn't any better). Eventually, I saw a 2018 CX-5 2.2DE Akera for sale for R465 000 with 8k on the clock, I couldn't believe it, I test drove it and signed that day. (turns out the price was incorrectly listed as cost by the dealer) Anyway, yes the diesel is more expensive but damn, overtaking is so much easier. The torque you get when you pull away, it almost feels like it wants to pull left but then the AWD kicks in and delivers. I wouldn't say its the fastest car I have ever driven and in fact, I thought all the little bits it comes with like lane keep assist and istop were great until I drove the car, I have now turned half of it off. I am still in warranty and service plan, I am not sure how much further servicing will cost. One thing I must mention, the Akera has 19" wheels, while I still have a bit of tread, I am not looking forward to the day I need to replace tires, they seem to be about R3500-R4000 a tire.

Other than that driving it has been a decent experience, the sound system is crazy good for a "soccer mom car" its decently comfortable, I did take a few weeks to adjust the driver seat to a position that didn't make me feel like I was breaking my back, turns out I now sit a lot higher than I used to. The only advice I would give you is to test drive both, you should be able to get a gut feeling from there.

Hey man

I have my 2015 CX-5 2.2D Auto Akera 6 months now and still enjoying every ride. I always enjoy the power when i'm cruising and then suddenly put down the throttle and there she goes. The camera with all the features had made me so lazy now. My average per full tank for the 50L tank is about 7.5L/100km. I had AA installed recently and enjoying it too. The sunroof comes in very handy too. My warranty does come to and end in May, but previous owner took 2 years extended out with Innovation. Mileage is not almost 56K with service coming up soon.

I'm in the same boat as you wrt tyres, it has the odd size of 225/55/19 and i have about 30% thread left on the rear with the fron having slightly more. Looking at Continental, Good Year, Bridgestone which will cost about 3k-3.5k a tyre. I have heard good reviews about the Grabber tyres, but not so clued up on those. Have you considered going with a wider tyre, maybe 234,245 or 255 perhaps. Dealer at Mazda says i could put any tyre on, but lots of people say that an incorrect size can cause gearbox damage and wear out your gears. Otherwise i'll stick to stock, but the 225 looks so damn thin on this big vehicle. It will looks so sexy with wider rubber on them. Will continue my research and decide closer to the time.

I have been trying to disable the DRL lights during the day, but it's impossible to do it. It goes on when the engine is running, out of park, handbrake and moving slowly. I have checked the forums like Maxda247 and it's all over the place people trying to disable it via a relay switch, removing the fuse and some even disconnecting the connectors. There is a procedure you can do which everyone seems to be doing, but i'm unsure of doing it as my car is still under warranty. they do say the it can be brought back with the same procedure.

Isn't the diesel AWD and the petrol 2.5 only FWD. If you're torn between the two then getting AWD as a bonus is surely the way to go.

I've tested the diesel it's incredible, smooth and that torque is so addictive.

Hey Vegeta, yes it's AWD. Do you have the same tyre as mine 225x55x19 or the 17"
