The Mazda CX-5 Thread

Ageing Mazda CX-5 set for hybrid tech model upgrade

You would be forgiven for thinking that Mazda had simply forgotten to create a new-generation CX-5. The current, and second-generation Mazda CX-5 is showing its age, having launched in world markets way back in 2017.

Its territory has also been seemingly threatened by other new Mazda SUVs that are not radically different in size and concept, from the smaller CX-30 to the US-market CX-50 and even the more upmarket CX-60.

Yet despite its age and newfound internal competition, the CX-5 remains the brand's best-seller worldwide, even in larger markets such as the US where it has to compete with the CX-50.

F**king paywalls.

Anyway, this is most likely going to be my next buy in a few years. Been looking at them for quite some time now and since I've previously owned two Mazdas, I'm looking forward.

Mazda's solid and well build CX-5 SUV goes to show that it is reliable as long continues timely maintenance is done.

*Maintenance UPDATE*

So Saturday wife calls me and tells me that car does not want to start after driving 2 km and that the brake pedal is hard.

I go there, get in the car then press the brake pedal hard and start the car. It starts but its a very hard start with barely much volts and the instrument cluster dials make a dance which tells me that the battery is kaput and with low voltage.

Saturday afternoon, i put the battery on charge until at about 7pm. Unplug it from charge, lock the car over night.

This morning, something tells me to check the battery voltage before wifey goes to worl and guess what. Voltage is reading 11.75 and i know then that battery needs to be changed.

Called a place which is 22km from me and they have stock of a 639 -E23 VARTA BLUE DYNAMIC – EFB which is the battery i wanted for R2430.

They wanted to charge me R350 for some diagnostic and to reset the dash lights for I-Stop and Battery management error. I am like NO thanks.

I will do manual reset at home.
Old Sabat 639 EFB battery lasted a dismal 2 years and 4 months which is disappointing.

I guess we move ON. My other car has a Varta Battery which is still going 4 years later and no issues plus that car is a not a daily car.

Considering buying a newish used (under 5 years) CX-5. Anybody know if replacement parts down the line are an issue / expensive?
Think I saw someone posted in another thread that Mazda parts are not always in stock here in SA and then have to be imported at some expense.

Next-gen Mazda CX-5 ‘pencilled in’ for SA; CX-80 nixed

The head of Mazda Southern Africa says the as-yet-unrevealed next-gen Mazda CX-5 has already been “pencilled in” for a local introduction in around April 2026…

The next-gen Mazda CX-5 has yet to be revealed, but the head of the Japanese firm’s local division says the upcoming new version of the family SUV has already been “pencilled in” for a local launch in about April 2026.

Craig Roberts, Managing Director at Mazda Southern Africa, confirmed the news to Cars.co.za during an interview at Naamsa’s South African Auto Week 2024 in Cape Town.

“Our next new introduction will be the launch of a new CX-5. That is currently pencilled in – and I use the term ‘pencilled in’ – for around about April 2026,” he told us.

Based on Roberts’ comments, we would speculate that the 3rd-generation CX-5 – which earlier reports suggested might not happen at all – will be revealed globally at some point in 2025, before hitting initial markets in the latter part of next year.

Other than the new CX-5, is there anything else on the cards for South Africa? Well, though the 3-row CX-80 was initially planned for the local market, Roberts suggested that was no longer the case.

“Mazda globally will be and has launched new product in the larger SUV [space]: CX-80, CX-90 and also CX-70 for the US [United States] market. Those vehicles are not slated for the South African market or various other right-hand-drive markets.
