The Mazda CX-5 Thread

Like the back. Front is a little underwhelming. Interior is nice if it was black.

Not digging the Mazda badges on the rear and steering wheel being replaced with M A Z D A, gives me Chinese brand vibes.

Dunno looks a bit RAV-4 if I’m honest. Doesn’t seem like it fits in with the rest of Mazda’s range. Still a nice looking car, mind you.

Yeah having M A Z D A on the steering wheel instead of the badge is a bit weird, too. And why did they remove the rotary dial?! The whole point of having it was to reduce driver distraction.

New Mazda CX-5 fully revealed

The new Mazda CX-5 has been revealed, sporting evolutionary design changes and extra interior space. Expect this 3rd generation of the family SUV to launch in SA in 2026…

Meet the new Mazda CX-5. While the exterior design changes are anything but radical (in fact, Mazda itself points out that the “familiar silhouette” remains), this 3rd generation of the Japanese brand’s family SUV is a fair bit larger than its predecessor, offering what the company terms a “more spacious” cabin.

So, when can we expect to see the new CX-5 in South Africa? Well, back in October 2024, Craig Roberts, Managing Director at Mazda Southern Africa, told Cars.co.za that this new model had already been “pencilled in” for a local launch in about April 2026.

Building in space for a customary delay or two (as well as taking into account Roberts’ emphasis on the term “pencilled in”), we’d speculate that a local introduction seems likely towards the middle of next year or perhaps even in the 2nd half of 2026. Time will tell.

But back to the new CX-5. Billed as a “a bold evolution” of the brand’s most popular SUV, the new model measures 4 690 mm long, 1 860 mm wide and 1 695 mm tall, respective increases of 115 mm, 15 mm and 20 mm. The wheelbase, too, has grown by 115 mm. According to Mazda, this allows for a “notably larger and more useful” luggage area (which gains 61 litres of space) as well as extra cabin room.

New Mazda CX-5 Finally Unveiled

Billed as a bold evolution of Mazda’s best-selling SUV, the new CX-5 has been unveiled, with the third generation sporting sharper exterior styling, a redesigned interior with upgraded tech, and an optimised petrol engine.

Introduced in 2016, the second-generation Mazda CX-5 has been around for nine years. So, it was about time for a new iteration of the Japanese automaker’s best-selling SUV. Following a brief teaser campaign, the box-fresh CX-5 has finally been revealed.

The new CX-5’s sheet metal is altogether more chiselled. The revamped front facia incorporates a subtly updated grille and revised LED headlamp arrays, replete with new daytime-running light signatures. Round back, “Mazda” lettering, flanked by tapered LED taillamps, replaces the marque’s emblem.

Although its silhouette is familiar to its predecessor’s, the third iteration is more sizeable. The new car measures 4 690 mm in length and 1 860 mm in width, making it 115 mm longer and 15 mm wider than its forebear. Height has increased, too, by 20 mm to 1 695 mm.

So Mazda has joined the touchscreen world.
Not sure how I feel about that. Really dig the current set up where I don't need to stretch to a screen.
Overall, don't like the front lights.
Most of the renderings by the internet looked better.
Wonder what pricing will look like.

All-new SA-bound Mazda CX-5 revealed abroad

Mazda has pulled the covers off of its all-new, third-generation CX-5, which has big shoes to fill given that it is the brand’s best-selling model globally, as well as in South Africa.

And bigger shoes it has, with the midsize SUV’s length having grown by a significant 115mm, all of which goes into the wheelbase to improve interior space, while overall width has increased by 15mm.

Its exterior design is a logical evolution of the second-generation, with a more chiselled frontal appearance and longer taillights round back that give it a strong resemblance to its more luxurious CX-60 sibling.

The cabin promises increased leg, knee and headroom, and a large panoramic sunroof is available as an option.

The cockpit area boasts ambient lighting and the largest touchscreen ever made available on a Mazda product, with the new unit measuring 15.6 inches across. The system has a customisable home screen, with quick access to frequently used features.

“The all-new 2026 Mazda CX-5 builds upon its proven foundation with a more spacious cabin that features innovative, intuitive technology, while also enhancing vehicle safety to craft an SUV that is more capable, engaging, and desirable than ever before,” Mazda said.

This is the (slightly) new Mazda CX-5 SUV, and it's now a funky-looking hybrid

Mazda gives its SUV a little refresh with new looks and a (single) petrol-hybrid powertrain

This is the new Mazda CX-5, and like its CX-30 and Mazda 3 siblings, it's now been electrified.

So out go the 2.0-litre/2.5-litre petrols and 2.2-litre diesel, and in comes a sole 2.5-litre mild hybrid 'e-Skyactiv G' engine. It makes a heady 139bhp and 176lb ft. That's sent to either the front wheels alone, or all wheels depending on trim. For the former, Mazda quotes 0-62mph in a heady 10.5s.

No, it's not as fast as it looks. But it does look good. The exterior design doesn't stray too far from the existing CX-5, but it appears as though every surface has been sweating at the gym: the front's slightly sharper, wears new lights and deeper air intake vents. Similar story around the back, too, where the new rear taillights help add some visual width and a bit more modernity.

Should ride and handle with a little more flair, at least according to Mazda - it notes tweaks to the chassis and suspension for "enhanced ride comfort and road handling". The old car was already a good steer.

Subtle changes underneath and outside, bit of a big step inside. Out goes the button-heavy cabin, and in comes a giant screen. Lots of them. Mazda's done a clean sweep of the instruments and centre console, binning the rotary dial and fitting a new 10.25in driving display, a giant central display available in either 12.9in or 15.6in, and a head-up display.

Google is integrated for the first time, enabling features like Gemini and Play (free initially, and then, er, not). Android Auto, Apple Carplay, Maps, Netflix and Amazon Prime also form part of the package, and the suite is coupled with a 12-speaker Bose sound system in the fancier trims, turning the cabin into a mini concert hall. There's also a wireless charger pad.

As the current owner of the 2nd generation CX-5. I am very dissapointed with this new Mazda CX-5

I would rather buy the 2nd generation version again

Mazda CX-5 has lost those touches that made it a Mazda. Interior design is like that of Chinese cars and there is not even a physical volume knob.

Its a NO for me
