The Mazda MX-5 Thread

Awesome car. 86 will take it at the top end though. 0.5s difference at 100, narrowed down to 0.12s difference at 140...

Yeah it'll take it up top due to the higher power. The reasons for the MX-5 being slightly quicker are simply lower weight and shorter gearing to effectively use the power it has.

Both still slower than the king (which will do low 14s on the quarter mile at the coast). Still, quarter mile times are nearly irrelevant for cars like these, designed for twisty back roads rather than the drag strip.

To put this into perspective, the MX-5 is running out of steam at just over 200, while the 86 is only hitting 5th with one gear to go. After 140 it's a no contest and the 1km and 0-200 km/h times should reflect this. But you're right, it's a pointless exercise, these are not straight line cars...

Very interesting review of the 1.5L MX-5 vs the 2L MX-5.

As you know sadly SA only gets the 2L. A number of other markets get a 1.5L as well.

So Auto Express pits the 96kw 1.5L to the 118kw 2L version.

Bare in mind the 2L gets the LSD.

20 000 GBP (R433k) vs 24 000 GBP (R520k)

Oh if you forgot list price of the SA MX-5

Auto Express actually preferred the cheaper; less powerful 1.5L ultimately....

I keep hearing good things about the base 1.5 MX-5. It's still an incredible fun car with *just* 96kw & 150nm.

Base model loses out on the fancy MZD Connect system but that's hardly the be all & end all.

Mazda SA must bring the base engine option as a value package...they will sell like hot cakes

Who cares. S2K > MX-5 > 86.

It's a Honda.

Are Honda's self maintaining? As reliable as the brand is,things need to be replaced and fixed sometimes. A lot of people prefer not having to worry about that at all.

As much as I also love the S2000(I think it's a truly special car), some buyers would prefer a new(or newer) car.

There is also the outdated dash and lack of some modern features like touchscreen LCD.

In its favour though is the price vs new MX5 and 86/BRZ. Although S2000's seem to be hard to find.

/facepalm

Wondering how important a touchscreen LCD is when one considers buying these cars

Perhaps not for you or PP, but not everyone wants the same things in a car
