New Mazda MX-5 Venture special edition launched
160 examples of special edition Mazda MX-5 confirmed for UK, priced at £27,615
A limited-run Venture edition of the Mazda MX-5 sports car will arrive in dealerships later this month, with 160 examples earmarked for the UK.
Priced at £27,615, the Venture is based on Mazda’s Sport trim, over which it carries a £1260 premium. It adds Deep Crystal Blue Mica paint, a grey, fabric soft-top roof, and the door mirrors and roll hoops are painted silver. Inside, the seats are finished in a unique Light Stone Nappa leather.
Other than these cosmetic changes, the Venture is identical to the MX-5 Sport. Riding on 16in alloy wheels, the car is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 130bhp and features a six-speed manual gearbox. On the standard car this results in 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds and top speed of 127mph, while combined fuel economy is given as 44.8mpg.
Apple CarPlay is standard across the line-up, while Sport models come with heated seats, a DAB digital radio, rain-sensing front wipers, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and keyless entry, among other features.

If you’re searching for a rear-driven soft-top and have £30,000 to spend, there’s little choice in the matter: the MX-5 has no direct rivals any more. Only the BMW 2 Series Convertible comes close - but with four seats and significantly more mass, it’s not nearly as dynamic.
Unless you plan on spending any time on a circuit, the entry-level engine arguably has greater driver appeal than the more potent 2.0-litre unit, delivering engaging performance at road-legal speeds.
Whether the Sport Venture is worth seeking out is more debatable, though. It doesn’t stand out in quite the same way as last year’s more distinctive R-Sport, but if the combination of white leather and small engine appeals, this is the only way to get it.

Rumour has it that Mazda built its own V6 prototype of the MX-5, but decided that it would encroach on the territory of its faster sports cars. Perhaps there’s a parallel universe somewhere in which they decided to go for it. In which case Rocketeer’s creation is a snapshot of an alternative history that never came to pass.
Rocketeer is drawing up plans to take the full restomod path in the future. “Completely take it apart and improve the whole thing,” says Bruce. “Restore it properly, back to the bare shell. Re-trim the interior, lots of little bespoke bits and pieces so you can have a V6 sports car that is absolutely to your specification. Think Singer, Alfaholics, that sort of thing.” Watch this space.

The Mazda Miata generations average about eight to 10 years, which means the current fourth-generation ND Miata, in production since 2015, is starting to get a little long in the tooth. It’s hard to imagine the Miata being anything other than a rear-wheel-drive gas roadster, but Mazda is reportedly in the midst of trying to electrify it.
That’s according to Motor1, which obtained the following statement from Mazda this week:
Mazda is seeking to electrify the MX-5 Miata in an effort to have all models feature a form of electrification by 2030. We will work hard to make it a lightweight, affordable, open two-seater sports car in order to meet the needs of customers.
Motor1 deduces from this (or perhaps confirmed on background with Mazda) that this means that the next-generation Miata, the NE, will be electrified, and perhaps that is right but it also seems possible that Mazda might wait for the NF, since 2030 is a good long time from now. It’s also possible that Mazda means all “models” of the Miata will have some sort of electric drive, but it’s more likely that some kind of hybrid or electric version of the Miata will be an option.

The first-generation Mazda Miata is a car you often find thrashed and trashed from a hard life with multiple owners. This super clean Sunburst Yellow 1992 Mazda Miata for auction on Bring a Trailer is like a time capsule back to the early 1990s.
Miata fans looking for something not peppered in rust holes are spoiled for choice. There are a surprising number of squeaky clean, low mileage Miatas for sale on the web right now. There are a few over at Bring a Trailer and even one with a mere 18,000 miles on Craigslist, of all places. I’ll admit that I’ve been looking for a Miata lately to try something different than my normal German fare. One car stuck out in the field and it’s this gorgeous Miata painted in a rare Sunburst Yellow hue.
The words “rare” and “Miata” don’t tend to go together as the cars are just about everywhere. But in this case it’s no exaggeration. Mazda made only 1,519 examples in Sunburst Yellow and not all of them have aged nearly as gracefully as this one.

The early nineties were big for Mazda – they won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the 787B and they had a product range that stretched from the 121 to the 626, as well as the MX-5 and MX-6, but at the same time the third generation Mazda RX-7 was in the pipeline. It was decided that an extraordinary sound system was needed for Mazda’s extraordinary sportscar. Bose were chosen as partners and so the engineering ingenuity begun.Bose’s exceptional Bose’s Acoustic Wave Cannon system was shoehorned into the cabin of the RX-7, miraculously compromising on neither the interior space or the sound quality of the system. Powerful bass and impactful sound were what they set out to achieve, and that’s exactly what they did.
The same innovation was seen with the Mazda MX-5. Of course, top-notch sound quality in a top-down convertible had always been a challenge for manufacturers, and Mazda and Bose managed to solve this. When the top is lowered, an EQ switch automatically adjusts the sound setting, with UltraNearfield speakers embedded within the headrests allowing for a completely immersive sound experience, roof up or down. In addition to this, Bose’s AudioPilot noise compensation technology continuously monitors the noise within the cabin and then automatically adjusts the audio accordingly, compensating for prevailing road and wind noise.
