M-Net to go hi-def with new channel

Published by Duncan McLeod July 25th, 2008 in Broadcasting

DStv operator MultiChoice will launch a high-definition channel on August 1. The channel, which will be available in a resolution of 720p, will be used to broadcast the Olympic Games from August 8, and from August 24 it will carry a new entertainment channel called M-Net HD.

MultiChoice launched its new HD personal video recorder (PVR) decoder at a function in Johannesburg last night. The device, which includes a 500GB hard drive, costs the same as the standard-definition (SD) PVR model — R2 499 — and is capable of storing 150 hours of SD content and 50 hours of HD material.

There is no additional monthly subscription fee for the HD service.

M-Net HD, which will be available on channel 170, is not an exact enhanced replica of M-Net but will rather contain a variety of programming from different M-Net channels, such as M-Net, Go, M-Net Series, M-Net Action and M-Net Movies.

While some shows on M-Net HD will simulcast with other M-Net channels, the channel will also have exclusive material as well as HD versions of shows that have recently been broadcast on M-Net or its channels.

The channel will be a mix of series, movies, sporting action and once-off specials, such as music concerts. Some of the programming — mainly movies, series and specials — will also be available in surround sound.

Other shows that will be broadcast in HD include season 6 of CSI Miami (Tuesdays at 8.30pm), season 4 of CSI New York (Thursdays at 9.30pm, and season 1 of Gossip Girl, based on the lives of privileged Manhattan students (Wednesdays at 6.30pm). Other shows include season 3 of My Name is Earl, season 1 of Samantha Who, season 4 of Lost and season 1 of Reaper.

MultiChoice says a range of HD movies will also be shown, with Die Hard 4, Zodiac, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Spiderman, Oceans Thirteen and Shrek the Third early in the line-up.

Sport fans can look forward to Premiere League Soccer on the weekends as well as at least one local SuperSport game per week. — Staff reporter

500GB? Thought it was 250GB?

Why would they even need a list of compatible TV's? Shouldn't any TV capable of receiving a digital input work (HDMI or DVI via converter)? Or does it have something to do with the HDCP version that they are using?

Yes it is all due to the copy protection via HDMI/DVI. There is devices available that will enable HDMI to DVI and maybe VGA/Component conversion to watch on normal TV's. But the intention is that HD will only work on HD Display devices via HDMI/DVI cable.

Regards to compatible TV's. I am sure that list is out of date and incomplete. That is only the ones they tested. The issue comes with the lower resolution TV's that still claims HD ready. Many Sinotec,Sanyo, Sansui etc. fits this group. What they will do is downscale the HD picture to display but obviously at a reduced resolution. So be Aware.

Look out for the "HD-ready” sticker when purchasing a TV, which means that the TV is capable of displaying at least 720 lines of resolution and can scale up lower resolution signals plus scale down higher resolution signals to fit the screen.

I have a SONY 32" Flat Screen TV and subscribed to DSTV premium, why is Chanel 170 not showing?

All us poor sods who wasted their money on adopting the MCA DSTV offering ... you should visit the DSTV forum at:
http://forum.dstv.com/index.php

Those still thinking about getting the one HD channel currently available, and spending around R3K for the bug-ridden HD decoder (the PACE HD-PVR), should first read the above referenced forum .... and only then make a decision to waste your money or not.

Apart from the awesome picture (a friend has a 50" Samsung 1080p plasma) the device is slow and only has single view (but you can record 2 channels). The 2 biggest setbacks in my books.
