The most graphically advanced game?

He was talking about a techdemo (which is only available as a video on "You tjoop") ... not news or previews. Point is; News/previews/video's of techdemo's is all hearsay until that box is on the shelf.

Nah, I could see that the Crysis engine was gonna be good, even on low-quality-japanese-recoded-pasted-on-you-tjoop videos.

Unreal Engine 3 doesn't come close to CryEngine. it may have a lot of trickery to produce nice graphics, but it doesn't have that same shadow/lighting/texture/particle fx technology.

You can't compare a game that you can currently play vs a badly compressed youtube video.

Actually I got the videos off of the July NAG DVD,they also have in game trailers and the resolution is pretty decent, and a tech demo is there just to show you what the engine is capable of. Propogational fire, day night cycle ,the clouds and weather change randomly(the wind picks up and causes fire to burn more effectively and change direction) destructable buildings, actually just do yourself a favour and watch those demo's.

Anyway I have no argument, thats just my opinion,if you dont like what I have to say just ignore me :D

No, your points are valid.

it will prob be the most technically advanced engine when it comes out, and spit at UEngine3, or anything else (Including the COD4 Engine)

I saw those videos on the NAG DVD and while I agree that the game looks stunning, "the most technically advanced engine" it is not. I'm not a Cryengine fanboy or anything, but we gotta face the facts. I still say COD4 engine ftw :D.

Have a look a this screen cap, and it's not even on the highest settings.

Well, methinks I'll finally install Crysis tonight once I've put in my 4870.

XP DX9 All high 1440x900 ( 8xAA afaik)- Minor lag for 1 second once in a while. Other than that I have nothing to moan about. A 4870 performing as it should :D

Edit:
Got the patch thingy. XP DX9 All VERY HIGH 1440x900 NoAA. Smooooth :D

UE3 is really impressive and has a lot of potential. The difference is, with my current PC I can play UE3 games on highest settings, but Crysis will drop to 5fps (using DX9 Very High) and only at medium setting does the game become acceptable. Medium = no HDR, crap lighting, no blur effects etc etc.

But to be fair, they both are exceptional engines.

COD4 uses a propriety in house graphics engine that Infinity Ward developed. It's an upgraded COD2 engine. Though not the best looking, I really do like the engine as it runs great while looking good too.

thats the thing - cod4 single player is awesome in some areas and i run it to the max 1680x1050 and it runs like silk on my 8800GTS.

I have noticed they have skimped a bit on online play for understandable reasons.

But as an engine not bad.

Crysis is cool but heh - my hardware cannot cope with it just yet on Full.

At 15-20fps ... (he frapsed it which is why it looks smooth) using a very powerful PC.

Anyways, I'm not arguing that Crysis is better/worse, all I'm saying is they are both exceptional. One is designed for astonishing detail even with mediocre cards and the other is for outdoor areas with lots of foliage (at a huge price of performance). They both have their own strengths/weaknesses.

I played Crysis on the weekend on my system, running 1920x1200 under XP, all settings on high, no AA or AF. Mein Gott it looks good! The water effects, cloak mode, the trees... Wow

Last year in December, my best friend brought his PS3 over to my house for a gaming day. We were playing Virtua Fighter 5, and boy did it look pretty good at the FullHD 1920x1080. The level when we fought on the raft on the river had excellent water effects, and it looked very good elsehwere as well.

Oblivion is also very very pretty on full settings, but I think Crysis has surpassed it now. I can't comment on anything Unreal 3 Engine related, as I haven't yet played anything based on it.

I think the new id engine behind RAGE will also be up there.

Damn, I only stumbled across this thread now ...

Crysis to me is definitely the winner but I must admit that my vote would go for COD4 - here is a game that looks and plays stunningly ..... the best part being that it does not RAPE your machine.

I think COD4 is great, but don’t think it really touches Crysis...But I totally agree with you, it is VERY hardware friendly and runs great, I think that has made a huge contribution to its success.

It all comes down to the Art and Style of the game, so by graphically enhanced you mean by which game looks closest to real life or which one would win a beauty contest?

Well... Crysis does look the most real, however, I think gameplay, genre, time, etc all play a part in this... A game can look amazing, but if it's gameplay and storyline is shocking, then whats the point of the game?

one should ask

most advanced and fully tuned so that it actually runs smooth

looking great or most advanced means nothing if the engine isn't properly optimized....

So true, I mean, Unreal Tournament 3, fear, The Elder Scrolls IV:oblivion would win that hands down.

The fact is that it's all good and well creating a game that looks better then real life, but if it's so demanding that it owns every system for the next 4 years, then that doesn't make it advanced. The most advanced engines would be the ones that don't suck every resource but still manage to look great, and thus they a very mature.
