The most useless drug ever...

...Cigarettes (Nicotine). It damages your body badly, gives you an odour that competes with a wet street dog and costs quite a lot... all without even giving you a high. Cocaine at least makes you feel great for a while... :cool:

Is this a pro-cocaine thread? :mad:

If you have one drink in the smoking section of a bar, the amount of 2nd hand smoke you inhale is the same as smoking 2 packets. :)

That's fine, since I haven't been in a bar in six months. :D

Still not convinced that an occasional drink is in any way equivalent to a smoking habit.

Weed you get in a matchbox at 2am from a garage is the most useless drug ever. Useless.

You're confused. Cigarettes are not a drug. Nicotine is a drug, and it most certainly does get you high. It does not damage your body, gives no odour to your body and is not all that expensive. Quite an excellent short-acting stimulant in fact.

Yea but nicotine was enhanced by the cigi companies to make it as addictive as it is, so no tobacco is not the problem, nicotine is what gets you addicted and they enhanced t's effects to ensure people stay addicted.
Well they may have formulated the cigarettes to increase the efficiency of nicotine delivery. Of course people choose to keep smoking rather than exercising control of the quantity of nicotine they consume.

I always said to myself I could easily stop when I wanted to. Oh how I lied to myself.
If you want to stop you can stop. The nicotine addiction isn't even the hardest part to give up.

How does one drink per week equate to several cigarettes per day?
No-one says you have to smoke several a day.

Yeah, right.

Actually-
Often referred to as “Smoker’s Paradoxes”, there are a number of therapeutic uses of nicotine or smoking. For example, smokers are less likely to need surgery to provide extra blood to their heart after an angioplasty, the risk of ulcerative colitis is reduced, and it even interferes with the development of Kaposi’s sarcoma (a type of cancer of the lymphatic endothelium).

Perhaps most surprisingly, is that there are connections to smoking and a reduction in allergic asthma. There is also a large body of evidence to suggest that smokers have a dramatically reduced risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s Disease.

Nicotine is currently being investigated as a treatment for ADHD, and Schizophrenia.

try stopping for 1 day, and taking it back up again. i guarantee it you WILL be high.
Try stopping for 10 years and you will have more friends, you'll be able to smell the tobacco odour and your food will taste much better.
(I've never touched it, but the rest of the family have)

Actually-

but you will most likely die before any of these benefits take place....

smoking is pretty stupid, i was/am lucky i dont have an addictive personality. I tried it, thought it was crap and that was that. I do enjoy the occassional hubbly, but only because it gives me a head rush :)

cigarettes should be on the banned substance list, its a heavily addictive and dangerous substance, but with that much revenue its never going to happen..
On the other hand, everyone has a choice to smoke, if u pick it and it guts you, thats your fault. The warnings are out there..

Thanks for that totally unexpected insight blunomore!!! How useful to readers of this forum!!! (assuming they are all idiots, of course).

Sackboy, yes nicotine is the addictive part of smoking, and it has a myriad of effects, not least which is stuffing with neurotransmitter balance. I disagree that it is the inhalation of smoke that is the over-riding factor in a reduced life expectancy. Sure it plays a large part, but i think the role nicotine plays extends beyond just being "the addictive part" of smoking. eg- cannabis smokers (don't suffer like cigarette smokers); non-smoking tobacco (also leads to reduced life expectancy).

I guess so, but there are so many additives, where do we point the finger:

Here's a list:

While these ingredients are approved as additives for foods, they were not tested by burning them, and it is the burning of many of these substances which changes their properties, often for the worse. Over 4000 chemical compounds are created by burning a cigarette, many of which are toxic and/or carcinogenic. Carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrogen cyanide and ammonia are all present in cigarette smoke. Forty-three known carcinogens are in mainstream smoke, sidestream smoke, or both.

Sackboy, correct, it is not easy to attribute the destructive forces of smoking to any one factor alone, be it the inhalation of smoke or any of the various chemicals a smoker inhales. We do know that nicotine on its own is one of the most toxic substances known to man- a minute amount kills.

I dunno sackboy. That list sounds like bullcrap to me. 4000 chemicals from a cigarette burning? You burn a cigarette and you get

* Carob Bean and Extract
* Carrot Oil

Carrot Oil ? That just appears from nowhere?

That's a list of the ingredients before you put a match to it. Then you get more, untested chemicals.
