The most useless drug ever...

Oh God, another ignorant rant against cigarettes in the form of a really stupid plight against nicotine. Go back to your cocaine. Use large(lethal) doses for best long term effect.

The epicness of the fail that is this thread is not even matched by the human stupidity that sank the Titanic.

Well, that's not very nice. Oh, wait.. I forgot one factor... "Punching someone in the face via standard TCP/IP" hasn't been invented yet. So, [-]pathetic[/-] brave school kids like you think you can post whatever you want. Go back to playing The Sims.

I disagree that it is the inhalation of smoke that is the over-riding factor in a reduced life expectancy. Sure it plays a large part, but i think the role nicotine plays extends beyond just being "the addictive part" of smoking. eg- cannabis smokers (don't suffer like cigarette smokers); non-smoking tobacco (also leads to reduced life expectancy).
Cannabis smoking most certainly does carry a cancer risk, along with an increased risk of developing bronchitis. And nothing else you mention could lead to the conclusion that the nicotine is the primary source of any harm from tobacco. Can anyone point to research into the higher cancer levels amongst the users of the nicotine patch?

We do know that nicotine on its own is one of the most toxic substances known to man- a minute amount kills.
Which is pretty much irrelevant.

There are various carcinogens in tobacco, some of them due to the curing process, besides any additives that are found specifically in cigarettes. Nicotine may have an exacerbating effect on the lungs because they're already harmed by the smoke, but what evidence is there that on it's own nicotine causes cancer, even when inhaled?

but you will most likely die before any of these benefits take place....
So they're finding dead people, still walking around, and they have a lower incidence of certain diseases?

I do enjoy the occassional hubbly, but only because it gives me a head rush :)
That's called getting high.

cigarettes should be on the banned substance list
No they shouldn't. Or maybe we should be monitoring everyone to make sure they aren't doing anything potentially dangerous? Wouldn't want the little children hurt themselves.

Sackboy, correct, it is not easy to attribute the destructive forces of smoking to any one factor alone, be it the inhalation of smoke or any of the various chemicals a smoker inhales. We do know that nicotine on its own is one of the most toxic substances known to man- a minute amount kills.
Cigarette stompies can kill a healthy baby. It only takes a few.

I was making a point somewhere saying that arguing that there might be certain health benefits from smoking is somewhat backward, since whatever benefit u gain would be null compared to the ill side effects...

Getting high? ok...if u so say...and ur point?

Cigarettes are dangerous in their own way and highly addictive so i am not sure what makes it so different from other drugs? Where do you draw the line for protecting ppl? If i cant make the decision to take other narcotics legally what makes cigarettes so different? I can drink and smoke legally but i cant have a joint or pop a pill?

Plenty of things will kill a baby. The toxicity of nicotine is totally irrelevant. It is not toxic in a normal dose, and that is all that is important.

People don't smoke for potential health benefits. It's a paradox because while smoking is clearly dangerous, it has turned out that it also appears to protect against certain diseases. And of course they'd only know that if people were surviving and not getting certain diseases. However if that protection stems from nicotine, then others can gain those health benefits without any need to ever smoke cigarettes.

Addiction potential is itself completely irrelevant. Addiction is not in itself harmful.

so i am not sure what makes it so different from other drugs?
Nothing. It is well-established that our drug laws are completely arbitrary. It is however personal choice to ingest nicotine in a harmful form, and those who do so pay additional taxes for the choice.

Where do you draw the line for protecting ppl?
You let adults decide for themselves whether they wish to risk harm to themselves. It is no-one else's business. The only logical conclusion of trying to protect people from themselves is the ultimate banning of anything that is considered to have risk.

I'm going to disagree with you there. Smoking is costing the health system an enormous amount each year, not to mention the economy. In fact, they debated this once in the UK and many officials were recommending that doctors not prioritize operations on people with smoking-related illnesses.
