Volkswagen's Golf 7 has been on-sale in South Africa since 2013 and is a consistent performer in local sales.
In November 2016, the company has unveiled a major update for its popular hatchback.
The Golf forms part of, VW says, "new and greatest product offensive ever" with many new models planned from 2017.

According to VWSA "The local launch is planned for the second quarter of 2017. We will most likely keep a similar model line up." Expect local details to emerge closure to its SA launch.
The updated Golf in enhanced throughout. Both the exterior and interior receive major tweaks while mechanically it gains new engines and an improved transmission.
The refreshed model also gains a new infotainment system and improved safety technology.

The enhanced Golf will be the "widest" yet, and the roofline will have a raking effect to improve aerodynamic abilities, though the downside is that the it could influence rear headroom.
New 1.5-litre, three-cylinder diesel engines will form part of the revised engine line-up and should, theoretically, be very fuel efficient. It also complies with EU6 regulations.
A 1.5-litre petrol engine will produce 110kW and will feature cylinder deactivation and a coast function.
The GTI Clubsport could feature a 240kW version of the company's 2.0-litre engine.
The new car's head- and taillights feature energy-saving LEDs.
Inside, the automaker says, active info display features a 12" screen in front of the driver that also features 3D navigation. The top infotainment system, known as discover pro, features gesture control.

Facelifted VW Golf 7 (and GTI) revealed; in SA in 2017
Volkswagen has finally revealed the restyled version of its seventh-generation Golf in Wolfsburg, which will reach South Africa in the second quarter of 2017.
Billed as a “major update“, the facelifted C-segment hatchback features subtle exterior styling tweaks, a more obviously updated cabin and a new engine option.
In keeping with the VW Group’s current trend, updates to the exterior of the seventh-generation Golf remain modest rather than revolutionary. A reprofiled front includes reshaped cooling vents and chrome highlighting to lend the car a perceived wider stance. Added to the options list is full LED headlamps.
More LED technology can be found at the rear, where optional sweeping indicator units add a touch of sophistication.
More significant are the changes made to the interior of the best-selling Volkswagen. Together with a fresh focus on materials and build quality, the updated Golf now offers Active Info Display as an option. Here, the driver is able to configure the fully digital (12,3-inch) instrument cluster to one of five layout options.
Incorporating many of the modern technologies found in other Group products, prospective Golf owners can now choose from up to five different (touchscreen-based) infotainment systems. In top-of-the-range Discover Pro specification, such modern conveniences as gesture control make accessing a full bouquet of new entertainment and safety features that much simpler.
Complementing a yet-to-be-finalised engine line-up is an all-new 1,5-litre turbopetrol engine offered in two states of tune. Incorporating cylinder-deactivation technology, this new 110 kW/250 N.m (in its most powerful state) is capable of returning a claimed 4,9 L/100 km, with a corresponding 110 g/km worth of CO2 emissions.

After much speculation and a flurry of rumours, we're finally looking at the facelifted version of the 7th-generation Volkswagen Golf. Here are some details about this vehicle, which will be coming to South Africa around the middle of 2017.
The Volkswagen Golf is one of the brand's most successful models and this latest update to the premium hatchback range incorporates an updated design, new engines, improved driver assistance systems and a new generation of infotainment systems.
Engines
Kicking off the changes is the debut of an all-new turbo petrol engine. The new motor is a 1.5-litre TSI Evo, which has claimed peak outputs of 110 kW and 250 Nm. This engine is claimed to consome 4.9 L/100 km. Other engines in the range include a Bluemotion derivative with 96 kW, while the GTI gets a power boost to 169 kW, while the GTI Performance package gets upped to 180 kW. In terms of transmission, a new 7-speed Dual Clutch Gearbox (DSG) will be replacing the older 6-speed transmission.
New Look
The revised aesthetic execution includes re-prolifed bumpers, new halogen headlights with LED DRLs, new full LED headlights instead of xenon headlights, new front wings and full LED tail lights, all of which will be standard on all derivatives. There are new wheels and colours to choose from, and the interior of the 2017 model year Golf is finished off with refined new decorative trims and fabrics. The range of equipment versions of the Golf remains unchanged.
Technology
Meanwhile, the latest Volkswagen onboard technologies have found their way into this new Golf. The digital dashboard known as Active Info Display has been made available, which will greatly improve the interior ambience. Gesture control has also been made available for the top-of-the-range versions.
The current infotainment systems have been replaced by all-new touchscreens, which have grown in size. The 5-inch "Composition Touch" and "Composition Colour" systems (with a display resolution of 400x240 pixels) have been replaced by the new 6.5-inch "Composition Colour" system, with a touchscreen resolution of 800x480 pixels, and the monochrome "Composition Touch" has been discontinued. The next level up, "Composition Media" and "Discover Media" (incl. navigation) have so far had 6.5-inch screens, but they have also been replaced by systems with the same names, but with 8.0-inch screens, while the resolution of 800x480 pixels also remains unchanged.
The 8.0-inch screen of the top-of-the-range "Discover Pro" system (incl. navigation) will from now on be replaced by a 9.2-inch touchscreen, with the resolution increased from 800x480 to 1280x640 pixels. The new "Discover Pro" will be the first Volkswagen infotainment system to offer both touch- and voice-command operation with gesture control in addition to proximity sensors – a world premiere in the compact car segment, Volkswagen says.
Other technology of interest includes an amplifier with an output of 4x20W, a DVD drive, two USB ports (Apple compatible), a pair of SD card slots, auxiliary input socket, a 10GB SSD drive, the full range of music playback capabilities, a movie player, jukebox, podcast player, proximity sensor and voice control as well as navigation. Optional are a "Rear View" (reversing camera), DAB+, up to two extra USB sockets as well as two mobile phone interfaces.
The driver or front passenger can simply rest their smartphones in a redesigned optional storage compartment with a mobile telephone interface. The highlight here is that the phone can be charged and coupled to the vehicle's external antenna via inductive charging. New connectivity allows the Golf to connect to current Apple and Android smartphones via App Connect which features CarPlay (Apple) and Android Auto (Google).
Safety
Adaptive cruise control, Front Assist with city emergency braking and pedestrian monitoring (with the radar hidden behind the big Volkswagen logo on the nose of the car) have been introduced in conjunction with Lane Assist, a blind-spot sensor, Rear Traffic Alert, Park Assist, Driver Alert, a reverse-view camera (Rear View), traffic sign recognition, automatic post-Collision Braking and trailer stabilisation (Trailer Assist – the first time a trailer manoeuvring system has been available in a compact hatch) and Emergency Assist. The proactive passenger protection system (PreCrash) has also been refined.
Traffic Jam Assist, in combination with Lane Assist (a lane departure warning system) and Automatic Distance Control will reportedly be available with all Golf models with a DSG transmission (although this still needs to be confirmed for the local market). The system makes traffic jams or stop-and-go driving in the Golf much more comfortable. It also makes driving in jams safer, as the assistant helps the driver to avoid the rear-end collisions so typical of traffic jams.

Golf 8 will be here when, two years maybe? And an update will follow that in two years as well.
If you need a car now, get one and maybe negotiate a better price cos of this facelift.

Volkswagen has handed its seventh-generation Golf a bit of a facelift, comprising exterior styling tweaks, an updated (and now optionally tech-filled) cabin and the first of a new range of engines.
So, what have we learned about what many are calling the VW Golf 7,5? Well, here are five key points you should know…
1. There’s a new engine (and more to come)
Yes, the Wolfsburg automaker says it has “enhanced” the EA211 TSI engine family, with a new turbocharged petrol four-pot the first to arrive. This so-called “1,5 TSI Evo” unit makes 110 kW and 250 N.m (the latter from just 1 500 r/min). Interestingly, it features cylinder deactivation technology, allowing VW to claim a consumption figure of 4,9 L/100 km. A BlueMotion version of this engine (making 96 kW and 200 N.m) will be added at a later stage, complete with an extended coasting function that sees the engine deactivate when the accelerator is released.

Volkswagen has also seen fit to use this facelift to add a smidgen more power to its popular Golf GTI. The standard version’s 2,0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine will now make 169 kW (an increase of 7 kW), while the GTI Performance’s output will rise to a handy 180 kW. VW has yet to reveal the effect this slight increase in grunt will have on the GTI’s performance figures.

This last function can be used to scroll through the main menu, change radio stations, or flip through a playlist. New or improved safety features, meanwhile, include traffic jam assist (allowing partial autonomy), a new pedestrian monitoring function, a nifty trailer assist feature and an updated park assist system.
