Volkswagen recently took the wraps off the updated Golf 7. And now the Wolfsburg-based automaker has revealed the latest version of the e-Golf, which gains a 50 percent increase in claimed range as well as a subtle styling update.
The facelifted electric Golf features a new lithium-ion battery, with capacity raised from 24,2 kWh to 35,8 kWh. This new battery increases the range by about 50 percent, which translates to a claimed range of 200 km on a single charge.
The 7,2 kW on-board charger, meanwhile, enables the battery to be fully charged in “less than six hours at a traditional charging station”. When equipped with the optional DC Fast Charging system, the battery can be charged to 80 percent “within an hour” at a DC fast-charging station, says VW.
VW says the electric motor has been upgraded as well. It now develops 100 kW (up from 85 kW), while maximum torque has been boosted from 270 N.m to 290 N.m. This sees the 2017 e-Golf hit 100 km/h from zero more than a second faster than before, at around 9,6 seconds.
Of course, the e-Golf can also be had with all of the new technology available with rest of the updated Golf range, including the brand’s nifty Active Info Display, gesture control and various driver assistance systems.
As it stands, there are no plans to bring the Volkswagen e-Golf to South Africa.

Volkswagen last week announced its plans to bounce back from the costly emissions scandal, cutting jobs and investing in “future-oriented” technology. But VW brand boss Herbert Diess also recently revealed another area of cost-cutting…
Diess told a German newspaper that the Wolfsburg brand planned to use a tweaked version of its MQB modular platform for the next two generations of its most popular cars.
The MQB platform, of course, underpins everything from the Golf to the Passat and Tiguan.
“In the past months, we have worked on the cost side of MQB and made significant progress,” Diess said, according to Boersen-Zeitung.
“The MQB has high technical substance, so we can use it for the next two vehicle generations without further major investments,” Diess added.
Of course, the platform is modular by definition, which means it can be fairly easily (and inexpensively) tweaked to underpin a variety of vehicles, provided that they share a basic layout (in this case, transverse, front-engine and front-wheel drive).
And that means, according to Diess, the upcoming Golf 8 and Golf 9 will share much of the underpinnings of the current-generation hatchback.

The Volkswagen Golf facelift will be here shortly; a facelift that caters for the entire range. Volkswagen has just announced that along with this facelift will be an R-Line package, similar to those found on the Passat and Tiguan, to mimic the likeliness of the Golf R.
The package consists of exterior trimmings, wheels and interior upgrades for Comfortline and Highline models.
The exterior package consists of front and rear bumpers with added air intakes for the front and chrome exhaust tips alongside a diffuser for the rear. High-gloss black sills, a rear spoiler and R-Line badging and 17- or 18-inch wheels top off the package.
Inside, drivers and passengers will find a set of sports seats and steering wheel with dark diamond flag inlays. Contrasting stitching will be used on the gear shifter and floormats while the door sill panels, pedal caps and foot rest will receive a stainless steel finish.
It’s likely that these packages will be available as options when the Golf facelift reaches South Africa this year.

Volkswagen has revealed an R-Line package for its facelifted Golf range in Germany, offering some of the racy style that you’d associate with an R badge, but without the price tag.
The revised Golf is due in South Africa during the second quarter of this year and although the R-Line pack has yet to be confirmed for our market, the fact that a similar offering is available on the new Tiguan is a good sign that it is on the cards.
So what's the deal with R-Line? Obviously there’s no performance mods here, just a choice of two styling packages – one that spruces up the exterior only and another that brings some sporty attitude inside as well. The pack is available on Comfortline and Highline models.
Exterior mods start with a choice of various 17- and 18-inch alloy wheel options (Sebring, Singapore or Marseille) and also include an R-Line front bumper with high-gloss black intake screens, a honeycomb structure for the lower intake and R-Line badging on the grille.
Moving to the back the cars stand apart with an R-Line-specific diffuser, trapezoidal chrome trims and a rear spoiler with aero flaps.
While you can stop the extravagance there, some extra cash will buy you the top R-Line package that redecorates your interior with R-Line sports seats, upholstered in either Carbon Flag/San Remo cloth or Black-Crystal Grey Vienna leather, as well as a multi-function sports steering wheel with contrast stitching and R-Line badging, and Dark Diamond Flag inlays.
Not sold yet? The pack also brings contrast stitching to the gear lever and floor mats, stainless steel door sill panels and pedals, and black roof lining.
