Volkswagen Golf GTD ‘under consideration’ for SA
Volkswagen South Africa says that the Golf GTD is currently “under consideration” for local introduction.
A member of VW SA’s communications team confirmed to CARmag.co.za that the company was studying the business case for bringing the diesel-powered hatchback to local shores, but stressed that “no decision has been taken as yet”.
We made contact with VW SA after spotting a post on the brand’s Facebook page asking fans whether they would be interested in purchasing a GTD were it to become available in South Africa.
The post links through to a short survey, asking “should we bring the Golf GTD to South Africa?” and “would you consider buying this model over the Golf GTI?”.
The current version of the Volkswagen Golf GTD is powered by a 2,0-litre TDI unit worth 135 kW and 380 N.m (with the latter on tap from just 1 750 r/min). In manual guise, the claimed sprint from standstill to 100 km/h takes 7,5 seconds, while the claimed fuel economy comes in at just 4,2 L/100 km (with corresponding CO2 emissions of 109 g/km).
The Golf GTD comes with smoked LED rear lights, bi-xenon headlights (with LED daytime running lights), chrome dual tailpipes, 18-inch “Nogaro” alloy wheels, side skirts, a rear diffuser, sports suspension and a chunky roof spoiler.
If the Golf GTD were to be introduced in South Africa, we’d speculate that it would arrive either with or soon after the facelifted range that is scheduled to touch down in the second quarter of 2017.

Last week, we revealed that the Volkswagen Golf GTD is currently under consideration for local introduction. And now the facelifted version of this diesel-powered model has been revealed.
According to the Wolfsburg automaker, the updated Golf GTD offers “a perfect overall package of sportiness, fuel economy and comfort”.
As before, the GTD employs a 135 kW 2,0-litre TDI unit allowing it to gallop from standstill to 100 km/h in 7,5 seconds (or one-tenth quicker with the DSG specified). Peak torque comes in at 380 N.m, while VW is now claiming a combined fuel consumption of 4,4 L/100 km.
Standard features on the facelifted model includes LED taillights, the new “Composition Colour” infotainment system, sports seats and progressive steering. Prices in Germany start at €30 800, which translates to around R445 000…
So, will the Golf GTD make it to our shores? Well, only time will tell, but we’d speculate that if it were to come, it would arrive either with or soon after the facelifted range that is scheduled to touch down in the second quarter of this year.

Latest Volkswagen Golf has minor styling revisions, an upgraded interior and turbocharged three and four-cylinder engines; price decreases by £650
The facelifted 2017 Volkswagen Golf features subtle styling changes, upgraded interior appointments and a newly developed 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine.
The predictably subtle mid-life changes brought to the Golf are designed to improve the overall competitiveness of the seventh-generation model against a raft of rivals until the arrival of more heavily altered eighth-generation Golf in 2019.
Pricing has just been announced: most models cost on average £650 less than their predecessors, although the entry-level 1.0 TSI 85 three-door retains its price of £17,625. Higher up the range, the Golf GTI starts at £27,865 in three-door manual form, and the Golf R tops the price chart at £33,935 with five doors and a DSG gearbox. Prices for models with the new 1.5-litre petrol engine have not yet been released.
In estate form, prices for the 2017 Golf start at £20,370 for the 1.4 TSI and rise to £34,985 for the Golf R.
