The next big thing

3GPP LONG TERM EVOLUTION - or just LTE to its friends - is a wireless networking technology that will replace current 3G technologies used for mobile Internet connectivity, bringing high-speed broadband to mobile devices wirelessly with speeds that eclipse those currently available from terrestrial solutions in South Africa. LTE outperforms the other next-generation wireless technology in the form of WiMAX, which has been used at points by Vodacom and other networks in Africa.

All right. But that is going to happen in the next decade ! 3.5G and Wimax is here and can be used as we speak of :D Nevertheles, is nice to see someone is planning for the future.

LTE will provide super-fast Internet connectivity with networks quick to deploy. When LTE does come to market rich Internet applications and the ability to stream live footage to cellphone users will become a reality.

They have been saying this for years about every wireless technology that is going to be released...

CERN creates a new super-fast internet, invites tons of people to a deathmatch

Apparently, when CERN isn't colliding particles (and ripping massive holes in the space-time continuum), it's busy working on a new "internet" which will be 10,000 times faster than our current version. The project -- known as "the grid" -- is built atop completely fiber optic networks, and utilizes modern routing centers. By keeping traffic out of our current phone and data systems, the researchers have been able to achieve speeds heretofore unseen on previous networks. The system connects from CERN to 11 centers around the globe, and will be switched on when the Large Hadron Collider is activated, on what the group is calling "Red Button Day." Project heads believe a network with this speed will lead to all sorts of futuristic innovations -- like true cloud computing, holographic video conferencing, and really, really fast pirating of the entire Nightmare on Elm Street series.

With folks like Nokia and Ericsson behind LTE you know it will win. It is like when Philips&Sony make an optical format - it will win.

"WiMAX will have its day in SA"

WWWAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

While there's no denying LTE will be become the next de-facto mobile wireless access standard due to the overwhelming dominance of the cellular/3GPP community (network operators & equip vendors), I'm amused at the 'slight of hand' con being used to motivate its superiority.

At a technical level LTE brings absolutely no new innovation/progress in radio technology/algorithms, in fact those to be used are currently avaliable in shipping standards such as WiMAX (802.16e) and iBurst (802.20). Only reason why LTE can provide the magical speeds claimed is cause they've hardwired the requirment for enourmous amounts of spectrum (up to 120MHz for 3 sector base station) into the specifications. Throw this amount of spectrum at any radio technology and it will provide those magical speeds.

Probably a clever clandestine way for the 3GPP community to justify/lobby (regulators around the world) why they should be allocated the lion's share of avaliable specturm (at the expense of other technologies/operator types). Seems to me more about protecting vested interests & monopolising resources rather than producing the the most advanced/innovative wireless standard.
