The Nio (EV Brand) Thread

Take a look at Nio's Onvo L90 SUV in all its massive glory

Nio's sub-brand Onvo is almost ready to launch its second model, following the L60 SUV which came out last year. The next Onvo will also be an SUV, but a much larger one. Meet the Onvo L90.

This was just certified for sale in China by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, a process which always reveals images of the cars that can be quite unflattering. Thus, Onvo decided to out its own set of official images of the L90, which you can see below.

It's definitely a massive SUV, this one. The MIIT certification confirms it has a 3,110 mm wheelbase. It's 5,145 mm long, 1,998 mm wide, and 1,766 mm tall, with its curb weight being between 2,250 kg and 2,385 kg.

It will have six seats, and will be powered by a rear electric motor with 340kW of power in the single-motor version. There will also be a variant with an added 100kW front motor. Thus, the combined output is 440kW or 590hp. The top speed is limited to 200 km/h.

Nio ignites European aspirations with affordable Firefly EV

Nio's sub-brand Firefly has officially launched its first new small electric hatchback, the Firefly EV. Price between RMB 119,800 and RMB 125,800 (approximately €15,110 to €15,900) in China, the Firefly is designed to boost Nio's sales volume. The company has confirmed that this compact EV will also make its way to Europe.

The Firefly is the first model under Nio's third brand and made its initial appearance during Nio Day 2024 with a pre-sale price of RMB 148,800 (€18,770). Nio has since reduced the price by nearly 20% as the official sales kicked off in China on April 19th. Deliveries of this urban-focused hatchback will start on April 29th.

Breaking away from Nio's established design language, the Firefly sports a distinctive and modern look. Key design elements include eye-catching round headlights and taillights, sleek flush door handles, and a contrasting black roof. Customers in China can choose from five vibrant exterior colors: purple, green, beige, white, and gray.

The Firefly measures 4003 mm in length, 1781 mm in width, and 1557 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2615 mm. This makes the Firefly 153 mm longer than the Mini Cooper SE. Despite its compact dimensions, the Firefly offers impressive practicality for its class. It features a 95 l front trunk, along with 27 cleverly designed storage spaces within the cabin. The rear trunk offers a standard volume of 335 l, which expands to 1253 l with the rear seats folded down. Additionally, there is a hidden 29 l storage compartment located under the right rear seat.

The interior of the Nio Firefly EV is equipped with modern technology and comfort features. The center console features a 13.2-inch floating touchscreen display, while a 6-inch LCD instrument panel is positioned on the steering column. The car also comes with a premium audio system with 14 speakers and Dolby 7.1 surround sound, an integrated fragrance system, and customizable 256-color ambient lighting.

We are desperate to see Nio’s bonkers Firefly rally car compete in the WRC

GR Yaris Rally1, meet your latest challenger… maybe

As our 2025 Shanghai Motorshow recap discusses, motorsport-y creations were far and few between. But one that did make an appearance was this potential WRC competitor dubbed ‘Firefly’.

Conceived by Chinese marque Nio’s sub-brand of the same name, it’s based on the pre-existing Firefly five-door supermini that’s soon to be launched in China. It may even come to Britain in the future, a brand spokesperson confirmed.

Anyway, let’s talk about the hot one. It retains the tri-lamp light clusters from the original, and… very little else. You may spot a mildly aggressive body kit attached if you squint hard enough, and that seems like suitable battle attire to go up against a GR Yaris Rally1.

And would you look at that rear end; the diffuser and wing are no joke, and probably combine to generate more downforce than you'll ever need. Other cosmetic bits include bright white racing alloys, a roof scoop and thick vents at the back of each wheel arch. That’s cooling sorted then.

Nio revamps its electric car lineup with focus on tech and comfort

Chinese electric car maker Nio has unveiled updated versions of its popular ES6, EC6, ET5, and ET5T models for 2025, promising enhanced technology and improved user experience. The company announced that reservations for the refreshed lineup, all built on the advanced NT2.5 platform, are now open.

One of the biggest changes across the new models is the redesigned interior. This time around, Nio went for a horizontal touchscreen, something we first saw in the ET9 sedan. The new layout promises to simplify the dashboard and deliver a more intuitive user experience. In the refreshed ET5 and ET5T, complementing the large central display is a new gear selector that has been relocated to the steering column, freeing up some space in the center console where now customers get two wireless charging pads with cooling function, along with redesigned cup holders that now come with sliding covers.

The exterior changes are subtle, but they help distinguish the 2025 models from their predecessors. The front of the vehicles now sports narrower daytime running lights. Nio has also made adjustments to the bodywork, which they say will improve aerodynamic performance.

The new ES6 and EC6 models are the best examples of Nio’s focus on an “intelligent cockpit,” drawing inspiration from the ET9. The interior centerpiece is a substantial 15.6-inch AMOLED touchscreen oriented horizontally. Drivers will also benefit from a large 19.4-inch head-up display and a high-resolution 8-megapixel streaming rearview mirror. The Nomi Mate 3.0 voice assistant has been upgraded to offer more natural and seamless interactions. Additionally, Nio has opted for a traditional stalk-style gear selector, replacing the previous mechanism for what they believe will be a more familiar driving experience.

Nio Firefly’s battery subscription slashes the EV price by €4,700

Nio has launched a compelling new offer for its Firefly EV, a compact electric car from its new, youth-focused brand. In a bid to lower the entry price for electric cars, the company introduced a "Battery-as-a-Service" (BaaS) plan. This subscription model separates the cost of the car from its most expensive component - the battery - making the initial purchase price much more palatable for consumers.

The new pricing strategy is aggressive. By opting into the BaaS plan, buyers receive an upfront discount of RMB 40,000, which translates to about €4,700. This drops the starting price of the Firefly's "Zizai" edition from an already competitive RMB 119,800 (€14,100) down to just RMB 79,800 (€9,500).

The higher-trim "Faguang" edition sees a similar reduction, falling to RMB 85,800 (€10,000). In exchange, owners pay a monthly battery rental fee of RMB 399, or roughly €47. This approach effectively turns a major capital expense into a manageable operational cost, a model that could resonate with budget-conscious buyers.

What exactly do you get for your money? The Firefly is a compact five-door hatchback designed under the eye of Kris Tomasson, Nio's Senior Vice President of Design, who brought experience from legacy automakers like BMW and Ford to the Chinese startup.

Onvo L90 pre-sale is on, putting Li Auto on the defensive

Onvo, a new brand under the Nio umbrella, has launched pre-sales for its L90 SUV at a price point that has the EV industry paying close attention. This launch is a direct and aggressive challenge to one of China's most successful electric vehicle makers, Li Auto, setting the stage for quite a summer showdown.

Onvo L90 gets a pre-sale starting price of RMB 279,900, which translates to roughly €33,300. This price is for the vehicle with the 85 kWh battery pack. For customers who prefer Nio's innovative Battery as a Service (BaaS) subscription model, the initial cost drops to an even more accessible RMB 193,900 (€23,000).

Insiders and market watchers widely expect the final price to be even lower when the vehicle officially launches at the end of July. This pricing strategy places a lot of pressure on Onvo's chief rival, Li Auto, whose own flagship six-seat SUV, the Li L9, starts at a considerably higher RMB 409,800 (€48,700). The timing is critical, as Li Auto is set to launch its first pure-electric SUV, the Li i8, on July 29, just before L90 deliveries begin on August 1.
