Report: Nio to launch in UK in early 2025 with new Onvo L60

Lack of import tariffs means UK will be first European market to receive Nio's new affordable EV brand Onvo

Nio will reportedly bring its new affordable EV brand Onvo to Europe next year, starting with the launch of the new L60 coupé-SUV in the UK.

As reported by Automotive News Europe, Nio's product planning boss Eric Yu explained that the brand will come to the UK first because it is outside the EU, and so does not impose the same import tariffs on Chinese-built EVs - which will have been a crucial motivator given Onvo's value-focused billing.

Nio's cars are currently subject to a 31% import tariff in the EU, up from 10% in 2023. Similarly impacted car makers including BYD, Chery, Volvo, Polestar and Mini are moving production of some EVs from China to Europe to circumvent the tariffs, but Nio has not announced any plans to build cars in Europe, having passed on the chance to take over Audi's EV factory in Brussels.

Nio itself launched in Europe in 2021 but has yet to make its way to the UK, so the expansion of the new Onvo sub-brand will mark the company's first foray into the market. Per ANE, Yu said that Onvo exports to Europe would begin when production reaches 30,000 units per month, which is expected to be around March 2025.

It is not yet clear how the cars will be sold in the UK. Autocar has approached Nio for comment.

This is Nio's cheapest EV yet, debuting its affordable Firefly brand

Over the weekend Nio held its Nio Day 2024 event, where, as expected, it officially unveiled its third and most affordable brand - Firefly.

Firefly's first car is also simply called Firefly, and you can see it in the images peppered throughout this article. Firefly pre-sales have already started, with CNY 148,800 (€18,400) pricing, though it's unclear if this includes the battery or not, as Firefly will have its own battery swapping stations throughout China.

The car will become available in April. Nio founder and CEO William Li said the Firefly is smaller than a Smart and smarter than a Mini. The Firefly is built to adhere to the latest five-star safety ratings in both China and Europe, where it will be launching next.

Nio's Firefly gets certified, has some specs outed

Nio's cheapest brand, Firefly, showcased its debut model which is also simply called Firefly, towards the end of December. In the meantime we've seen it undergoing some tough winter testing, and today it's received the necessary certification for sale in China.

This process has outed the images of the car you can see in this article, along with some of its specs. Let's dive right in.

The Firefly has a single electric motor which develops 105 kW (140 hp, 142 PS) of power. The car has a top speed of 150 km/h. It's powered by a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery manufactured by Sunwoda, although its capacity sadly hasn't been revealed.

Here's the upcoming Nio Onvo L90 in an official shot

Nio's sub-brand Onvo is getting ready to launch its second EV, following the L60 which was released last year. This was thought to be called L80, but it actually turns out it will be the L90. We've already seen it in some spy shots last month, and today the brand itself has shared the teaser image you can see below.

That's the three-row Onvo L90 wearing a heavy suit of camo, sitting pretty next to one of Nio's many battery swapping stations in China. It's actually parked in the position from which it will drive itself into the station for the battery swap.

Like the L60, the L90 will also support Nio's battery swapping service, which gives your EV a fully charged battery in about three minutes, beating every fast charger out there, and it's even faster than refueling an ICE car.

Nio and CATL to build world’s largest battery swap network

The world of electric cars is about to go through a rapid change, thanks to a major partnership between Nio and CATL. These two companies are joining efforts to build the largest battery swap network ever seen. This means drivers of electric vehicles will have more options and faster ways to keep their cars running, at least in China.

Nio is the pioneer of battery swap technology, and it is teaming up with CATL, which is the world's biggest maker of EV batteries. Together, the two companies will create a vast network of battery swap stations. This will let even more EV owners quickly replace their car's battery with a fully charged one, instead of waiting for it to charge. CATL is investing up to €312 million into Nio Power, showing they are serious about this partnership.

The plan is to have two battery swap networks working side by side. Nio's existing network will continue, and CATL's Choco-Swap technology will be used in Nio's new Firefly brand cars. This means more battery swap stations and more choices for drivers. The companies also want to work together to make battery standards the same across different car brands. This would make it easier for all EVs to use the swap stations.

Beyond just swapping batteries, Nio and CATL are looking at the entire life of a battery. They want to work on battery research, asset management, and recycling. This will help make EVs more affordable and better for the environment. They also want to help China set national standards for battery swap technology.
