Nio ET7 Goes 649 Miles On A Single Charge, New Big Battery Available As Upgrade For Older Cars
When the electric sedan completed its journey it still had three percent charge left
The Nio ET7 is already one of the highest-range electric vehicles available globally, with its 100-kWh battery pack option giving the large Chinese sedan a range of 435 miles on the European NEDC cycle (which is more optimistic than the EPA cycle). Now the ET7 is offered with a huge 150-kWh semi-solid-state battery pack, and Nio’s founder, chairman and CEO William Li took one on a journey across China, going 649 miles without needing to charge.
Li began the trip in Shanghai, driving to Xiamen over the course of 14 hours (including a couple stops along the way), and he was joined in the car by Dr. Fei Shen, Nio Power’s senior vice president, and Chenxia Huang, a general manager at Tencent News, who livestreamed the journey. When the car reached its destination it still had three percent charge left, after starting at 100 percent. Li hopes this gas-beating long range “will further promote the transformation of the automotive industry from the consumption of gasoline to electricity.”
There are a couple of important points to note. The test was done in fairly cold temperatures between 28 and 54 degrees Fahrenheit, which negatively affects EV range, and 92 percent of the driving was done with the car’s advanced Level 2 automated driving system active, which limits the car to a top speed of 56 mph. The ET7 is one of the most aerodynamic production cars of all time, matching the Tesla Model S and being bested by the Mercedes EQS, Lucid Air and Volkswagen XL1. In more ideal conditions even more range could be squeezed out of the ET7 — Li even disclosed that a test car with the new battery did 711 miles on a single charge.

From Shanghai to Xiamen, a three-person team piloted the saloon for over 14 hours without stopping for a recharge
Remember the wild Nio EP9 electric performance car? Well, the Chinese marque has now started to really show its versatility by completing a 648-mile (1,044km) journey with its ET7 saloon, using up around 97 per cent of its battery power. Yep, there was still plenty of juice left over for a coffee run at the end of it.
The 14-hour drive began in the manufacturer’s home city of Shanghai and ran along China’s east coast to Xiamen, with a three-man team including Nio CEO and chairman, William Li, alternating between shifts behind the wheel and annoying the driver with terrible music choices. We made that last bit up.
Despite cold temperatures - so often associated with reducing EV range - the ET7 managed to complete the trip without the need for a battery swap or a recharge, which Nio says is a testament to the ‘true capabilities’ of its all-new Ultra Long Range battery.
Said battery is a 150kWh unit and has a cell energy density of up to 360Wh/kg. In layman’s terms, this makes it the most high capacity and energy-dense battery currently being mass-produced in China.

Nio's first Alps branded EV brags that it's better than the Tesla Model Y in spy shots
Nio is preparing the launch of its first sub-brand, which has so far tentatively been called Alps. This should release cars that are more affordable than Nio's current offerings, and aimed at families apparently. The first car should hit the Chinese market in the second half of this year, and before that happens a lot of testing is necessary of course - some of it on open roads.
That's exactly where a prototype Alps model has been spotted, wearing some pretty lovely camo as you can see. But the camo isn't the most interesting thing about it - it's the inscription on the rear windscreen.
The text roughly translates to "better than Model Y". The Alps is taking a direct stab at Tesla's best selling car, and clearly positioning itself in the market as Nio's alternative. The car is currently codenamed DOM, but it will be marketed as something more catchy of course.
