The Nio (EV Brand) Thread

First units of Nio ES6 arrive at stores accompanied by new ad campaign

Nio unveiled its final official ad for the Nio ES6 while the first units of the car arrived at Nio stores across China. The company is preparing for the official launch on May 24, with the deliveries starting the following day. This is an unprecedented push from Nio, and the company is making a lot of effort to ensure the waiting times for the ES6 are as short as possible.

The new ad is the fourth in a series of short videos following the same theme “Life Is On” and there’s nothing unusual about a car company making an advert about its vehicle. The intensity of the marketing though, that’s new for Nio. Previously the company was restrained in its advertising, trying to copy Tesla and hoping its customers would do the marketing. Clearly, this wasn’t enough, and the launch of ES6 is accompanied by a huge marketing campaign. Funny enough - Tesla is looking to start marketing campaigns as well.

Nio is rallying supporters from every corner of China; earlier last week it invited press and social media influencers to Beijing for test drives. The company is splashing out on advertising campaigns on every popular social media channel in China, making sure that all the people talk about for the next few weeks is Nio ES6.

The second generation ES6 is based on the new NT2 platform, the previous version was introduced back in 2018 and sold over 130,000 units in that time. That’s a whopping 40% of Nio’s entire sales making the ES6 hugely important for the company.

Nio launches ES6 in China with 75kWh and 100kWh batteries

Nio launched the ES6 in China today. The Nio ES6 comes in three battery configurations, two of which will be immediately available. The 75kWh battery pack offers up to 490km of range, while the 100kWh can go for 625km.

Nio will launch the semi-solid state 150kWh battery in July, which will be able to achieve 930km.

Nio ET5 Touring launches in China and Europe

Nio officially unveiled its first electric wagon - the Nio ET5 Touring. During a dedicated online event, the company took the wraps off what’s shaping up to be a very important vehicle. After the first unveiling of the new EL7, the time came for the ET5 Touring, and there was a surprise in store for everyone watching.

If you don’t like spoilers and would rather watch the lengthy unveiling on your own - please skip this paragraph and go straight to the video. Now - the surprise. The unveiling was hosted by the one and only, Ben Collins, former Stig for the world-famous show Top Gear. The stage was set up in the style of the show, with Ben taking on the role of the host with the audience gathered around the all-new ET5 Touring - was it fun? Well, let’s just say that Ben is way better behind the wheel - you can see it for yourself:

After the world-hopping tour and incredible scenery of Norway have faded in our memories, the ET5 Touring has left a firm imprint - one that will be hard to remove. We gotta agree with Ben here - an electric wagon with plenty of room and even more performance, what’s there not to like? Let’s look at some numbers then.

At 4,790 mm the load-lugging ET5 is exactly as long as its sedan sibling, and yet it comes with 1,247 l of cargo space, once the rear seats go down. It has room for everything - thanks to the clever 40/20/40 folding rear seats, you can have 4 people on board with 4 sets of skis or a couple of surfboards. The cargo floor lifts up to reveal more clever storage, and there are power AC sockets together with the standard 12V outlets - ingenious.

There’s two new Nio models for Europe, including an all-electric tourer

Sadly, the Chinese brand’s ET5 Tourer and EL6 aren’t coming to the UK just yet

Chinese car maker Nio has launched two new pure electric models for the European market. A touring version of the ET5 sedan and equally svelte new SUV - dubbed EL6 - are now on sale in Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden.

An evolution of the ET5 sedan, the estate's bigger dimensions mean it’s got more rear headroom and the same competitively in-class legroom. Aimed squarely at families and those with active lifestyles, the boot has 450 litres of space, and a further 42 litres under the floor. The rear seats split 40:20:40 to offer families maximum versatility and the boot lip is only 699mm off the ground. Nio reckons that makes it easier to pack.

What’s more, the all-electric Nio ET5 Tourer has all kinds of practical features, like magnetic space straps, storage nets and tailgate hooks – which Nio says are specifically for ‘hanging up wetsuits’. It seems wild swimming really has taken off.

Fortunately, easy-to-clean fabrics adorn the interior, which also features a 12.8-inch tablet display and 10.2-inch cluster. Features like ‘camping mode’ have been combined with other real-world accessories, like a torch and panoramic glass roof all scream ‘outdoorsy types are us’. For indoor types, there’s a super swanky audio suite, ventilated front seats with massage functionality and ‘smart fragrance system’. Nio also says the cabin glass offers 80 per cent isolation from heat. Coooool.

Nio is ready to offer world’s first semi-solid-state 150 kWh batteries

In an exciting development for the world of electric vehicles, Nio, the renowned Chinese EV manufacturer, is all set to offer high-energy-density batteries to its customers. These new-age, semi-solid-state batteries are being provided by Beijing WeLion New Energy Technology, a leader in the battery manufacturing sector.

The 150 kWh battery packs with an energy density of 360 Wh/kg manufactured by WeLion were officially handed over to Nio in a ceremony held in Huzhou, Zhejiang province on June 30th. This significant event was held at the factory where these advanced batteries are produced.

At the ceremony, WeLion's executive vice president, Xiang Jin, and Nio's senior vice president, Zeng Shuxiang, officially sealed an annual order deal. Both parties refrained from revealing the order size, but the occasion was momentous. WeLion chairman, Yu Huigen, lauded it as a notable industry-wide achievement, the culmination of over two years of a collective effort between both companies.

Mr. Yu also expressed his gratitude to the Huzhou city government for their support in the successful start of WeLion's inaugural production plant in the city. This collaboration, he said, heralds a promising future for Nio car owners, as they can look forward to the benefits of a battery upgrade.

Nio takes delivery of 150kWh battery pack components, capable of 600+ mile range

Has the step change in battery tech finally arrived?

Nio’s battery supplier WeLion has delivered the first of its advanced battery cells to the Chinese electric car maker. Nio had promised to start deliveries of EVs with its 150kWh battery packs in the first half of this year after revising deadlines. And, shock horror, it’s actually happening.

The semi-solid-state battery cells are more energy dense than those before it. Featuring a solid electrolyte, a silicon graphite composition anode and a nickel-heavy cathode, the cells have an energy density of 360Wh/kg. To give that some context, Tesla’s 4680-cell battery – considered the best on the market for a long time – has 272-296Wh/kg.

The more remarkable feature is that vehicles fitted with the new pack, according to China News EV Post, weigh ‘only 20 kilos more than before’.

The Nio ET7 is one of the models expected to feature a giant battery, capable of over 600 miles of range on one charge. It’s a veritable challenger to the Mercedes EQXX and Lucid Air, set to arrive in Europe later in the summer.

Nio ET5 and ES7 ace the updated Euro NCAP

The Chinese electric vehicle maker Nio is on a safety-ratings roll. The company's newest offerings, the ET5 sedan and ES7 SUV (known to us Europeans as the EL7), just aced their latest tests like they've been hitting the safety textbooks all night.

Fresh off the Euro NCAP website, we find that the ET5 and EL7 are the only two 2023 graduates so far with the 5-star results. And mind you, this isn't the Euro NCAP that we all know - this is the updated 2023 version. These tests are no joke, with much harsher penalties now for underperforming vehicles in adult occupant protection.

The ET5 led the pack with scores that would make any established car company proud: 96% in Adult Occupant protection, 85% in Child Occupant, 83% for Vulnerable Road Users, and 81% in Safety Assist. The EL7 didn't disappoint either, scoring 93% in Adult Occupant, 85% in Child Occupant, 80% for Vulnerable Road Users, and 79% in Safety Assist.

Nio Phone to be released on September 21 - week after the new Nio EC6 SUV

In the world of tech and cars, September is one of the most thrilling months of the year and Nio will experience both over the next two weeks. Company's co-founder and president, Qin Lihong, shared that the company would be releasing the EC6 model on September 15. But not stopping there, Nio is all set to dive into the mobile market with its Nio Phone, launching on September 21.

Previously Nio had confirmed smartphones were in the pipeline and the plan was to churn out a single model per year.

During a recent earnings conference call, Li emphasized how smartphones could improve the competitiveness of Nio’s vehicles. The expectation is that there will be some cool integration between Nio's smartphones and its cars. Changing car settings with a swipe on your phone is already a reality so we are wondering how much further can Nio take this.

Nio EC6 launches September 15 - deliveries start day after

Nio is set to launch the new EC6, a mid-size smart electric coupe SUV. Mark your calendars because on September 15 at 8 pm Beijing time, the curtains will rise, and the newest offering from this Chinese EV titan will be unveiled.

It wasn't a complete surprise for those following the e-trails. Some savvy social media users already had wind of it, and Nio merely confirmed the chatter. This latest EC6 is the company's last holdout, making its transition from the NT 1.0 platform to the newer, shinier NT 2.0.

The company seems quite proud of this transition. In an analyst call following its Q2 earnings report, the management was all chatter about the company completing a full product switch to the NT 2.0 platform this month. And why wouldn’t they? As we’ve seen, Nio's products are designed to cater to the premium EV market. They’re not just about making EVs; they’re crafting a luxury experience.

The original EC6 was launched at the end of 2019 and began its delivery cycle by September 2020. Comparing this to the recent reveal that the new EC6 would start deliveries a day after its launch, it's evident Nio isn’t playing around. The EV maker seems determined to ride the wave of initial customer excitement and has strategically moved to capitalize on it. No dilly-dallying this time around.

Pricing has always been a topic of great debate in the automotive sector. With the previous EC6 models ranging from RMB 396,000 to RMB 496,000 (€50,600 to €63,400), one can’t help but speculate where the new EC6 might land. Given that Nio shaved off RMB 30,000 from all model prices recently and keeping in mind the company’s habit of pricing niche models RMB 10,000 more than regular ones, there's some anticipation in the air.

Nio EC6 officially launches with a heftier price tag than ES6

Electric vehicle enthusiasts - make room for Nio’s latest release: the EC6. Stepping up from the previous generation's NT 1.0 platform, Nio has revamped and refreshed the EC6 using the new NT 2.0 platform.

The EC6’s launch has everyone's attention not just for its design, but also for its price tag. The model starts at a cool RMB 358,000 (€45,800), which is RMB 20,000 (€2,560) higher than its sibling, the ES6. However, for those interested in a Nio-exclusive battery rental option, it's available for a slightly less startling figure of RMB 288,000 (€36,900).

The much-hyped launch event took an unconventional twist. While the company showcased the car in a distinct manner, Nio’s CEO William Li’s speech ended up playing second fiddle. Why, you ask? Well, it seems the EC6 is crafted for a niche audience, diverging from the ES6's broader target, which Nio cannot afford to flop.

Spanning a length of 4,849 mm, and a width of 1,995 mm, the vehicle stands at a height of 1,697 mm, boasting a wheelbase of 2,915 mm. Echoing the aesthetics of other NT 2.0-based models, the EC6 sports familiar taillights and headlights and the same roof-mounted LiDAR and camera setup. Not just a pretty face, the EC6 houses dual electric motors produced in Hefei, Anhui province, offering a maximum power of 150 kW (front) and 210 kW (rear). These impressive numbers enable the EC6 to hit top speeds of 200 km/h. For reference, it's on par with the powertrain specs of the ES6, ET5, and ET5 Touring.

Nio Phone is official with unrivaled car integration, three 50 MP cameras

Nio announced its first Phone today at a big event in China. The Chinese EV car manufacturer put a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset inside the phone and three capable 50 MP cameras on the back. Since it is a car company first, Nio also made the Phone double as a car key that works even when it is turned off; and this is just one of over 30 vehicle-related features that are enabled through a dedicated app.

The smartphone has a 6.81” LTPO OLED at the front with up to 120 Hz refresh rate and advertised peak brightness of 1800 nits. The resolution is 1440p. There is either 12 GB or 16 GB RAM, while storage is 512 GB or 1 TB.

Nio Link is the app responsible for all the car-related features. Thanks to the UWB technology, the car knows when the owner’s phone is nearby and automatically locks and unlocks. The app also offers controls for the air conditioning, seat adjustments, and music, and, of course, gives a status report of the battery capacity and estimated range.

The Nio Phone can also be placed in the executive island on the ES8 car, where it will automatically transform into a control screen for music, ambient light, and others. The destination can be pre-set through the dedicated navigation app, and it will automatically move to the entertainment system once the phone is in the car. Also, the phone can utilize the cameras around the car to record a video and then edit and share it.
