The Nio (EV Brand) Thread

Tencent will help Nio with autonomous driving technology development

Nio and Tencent signed a strategic partnership agreement, which will see Tencent taking responsibility for development of autonomous driving technology. Tencent is Nio’s largest institutional shareholder and this agreement can be seen as Tencent supporting its own investment - the company owns 9.8% of Nio, which is the second-largest share behind Nio’s founding team with its 9.9%.

Tencent will be tasked with large-scale data storage and processing, and it will provide its support when it comes to training data models. The company will offer support for development of autonomous driving cloud technology, smart driving maps and user experience innovation.

The agreement was signed yesterday between the two companies in Shenzhen which explains why the CEO of Nio was present at the opening of the latest Nio House in Dongguang - the Tencent’s headquarters are less than an hour’s drive away.

Tencent will use its expertise and expansive hardware to host and process all the data required for computing and training of the highly advanced and complicated autonomous driving models. The company will take the development all the way to the operational stage when it’s ready for deployment.

Tencent Cloud - a cloud storage dedicated arm of the Chinese tech giant - will help Nio to build a new hybrid infrastructure for smart car environment and at the same time Nio will benefit from having one of the most stable and reliable open platform services at its disposal and thus available to its customers.

China's Nio Will Sell Next-Generation EVs in the U.S.

Although it's still not clear exactly when that will be.

If you’re not familiar with Nio, that’s OK. It can be hard to keep up with all the electric startups that have popped up over the years, especially in China. But Nio’s been around since 2014 (back when it was known as NextEV) and currently has a lineup of six different models. And soon, Nio plans to enter the U.S. market.

There have been rumors for years that Nio would try to sell its cars in the U.S., and considering how big of a country we are, it seemed inevitable as long as Nio didn’t go out of business. But now CarNewsChina reports that the CEO says it’s definitely happening.

Speaking to employees at a company event, co-founder and CEO William Li said he plans to sell the next generation of Nio EVs in the U.S. He also confirmed that Nio is still on track to produce its own chips and batteries starting in 2024. He reportedly believes that’s a necessity if the company is ever going to become profitable.

Assuming that plan comes to fruition, Li said the cost savings would be significant. Self-manufactured batteries would save them eight percent over buying one from somewhere else, and in-house chips would be 10 percent cheaper. He also said his goal is to break even in 2024 and be profitable going forward.

Nio rolls 300,000th car off the assembly line

Nio has hit a milestone today as it rolled out its 300,000th EV off the assembly line. It happened to be a blue ET5 sedan made at Nio's NeoPark factory.

It took Nio 4 years and seven months after it built its first vehicle in May 2018.

Speed is definitely picking up, though, as Nio celebrated its 200,000th produced vehicle on April 26 and it achieved its 200,000th delivered vehicle the next month, on May 15.

Nio has delivered a total of 273,741 as of November 30, while in 2022, the maker added three new models, based on the second-generation NT2 platform - the ET7, ES7, and ET5.

Nio invites all automakers to use its battery swap technology

For an 8-year old car company Nio has quite a track record. It has been expanding its offering in Europe, it has been growing in China and in other markets and its own technology is the envy of many other automakers.

The company confirmed that the ES8, ES6 and EC6 models will be upgraded to the new NT 2.0 EV platform in the first half of the next year. The refreshed flagship 2023 ES8 will be unveiled during the Nio Day on December 24 in Hefei, China.

The other Nio EVs - ET7, ES7 (sold in Europe as EL7) and ET5 - are already built on the latest NT 2.0 platform and have been launched in Europe. Initially the buyers had only a subscription option but the company quickly backtracked on that idea following public response. The company now offers both subscription and outright purchase.

Nio admitted that its plans to build 20 battery swap stations in Europe before the end of this year are facing unforeseen roadblocks. The company did not fully appreciate the complicated local regulations and associated costs. Despite the initial delays, Nio is still pushing ahead and wants to have 120 stations across Europe by the end of 2023.

The company is still holding off its debut on American soil but according to Mr Lihing, the company director, Nio is preparing to launch in the US.

Nio prepares to launch £100,000-plus electric luxury saloon

Chinese firm reportedly seeking to take on Mercedes-Benz’s Maybach division with new four-door flagship model

Nio is preparing to enter the upper-luxury sector with a new electric saloon, according to a Chinese media report citing an insider with knowledge of the Shanghai-based car maker’s future model plans.

Claimed to be in the early design and engineering phase, the new four-door has reportedly been conceived around a price of more than RMB1 million (£116,000) – almost twice that of its existing most expensive model.

It will also be sold under the Nio brand name and will compete with the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class in terms of luxury, the source told AutoHome.

The new flagship Nio saloon is set to be unveiled in 2024 and sold globally, the person is quoted as saying.

The new saloon model is said to be part of plans to provide the Nio brand with a higher market position.

Its most expensive model to date, the ES7 SUV, has a base price of RMB 548,000 (£63,800) in China.

In a recent statement to the media, company president Qin Lihong said the average price of Nio models sold in China was RMB 466,000 (£54,000).

Nio teases the upcoming EC7 ahead of December 24 announcement

In just two days, Nio Day 2022 will take place and the company already confirmed it's announcing two new models there. Now we get Nio a short teaser video showing one of those.

The video shows an electric rear wing, and according to CarNewsChina it belongs to the Nio EC7. The other new car to debut at the event is going to be Nio ES8 2023, the publication claims.

The mechanized rear wing should help EC7's high speed performance.

New 2023 Nio EC7 challenges Audi Q8 E-tron with 572-mile range

Fast-growing Chinese brand's new SUV-coupe tipped to be one of the longest-range EVs on sale

Chinese electric car company Nio has revealed the new EC7 as a luxury-focused SUV-coupé with a lounge-style interior, advanced cabin technology and a range of nearly 600 miles.

Revealed at the firm's annual Nio Day presentation, the Audi Q8 E-tron Sportback rival is essentially a more rakish version of the recently revealed Nio ES7 SUV, and will follow that car into Chinese showrooms from May 2023.

Nio chairman William Li made no mention of plans for a European launch at its unveiling, but the brand recently arrived in the market with the ES7 (sold as EL7 outside of China) and ET5 and ET7 saloons, so it's highly possible this new addition will come here, too.

Nio has pledged to start selling cars in the UK by the end of 2023, but so far has committed only to bringing the ET5 here alongside another unnamed model.

The EC7 is billed as a high-performance and luxurious proposition with a 'living room' interior and some of the most advanced software and hardware on the market - including a roof-mounted lidar device and 32 'high-precision' sensors for level 4 autonomous driving.

It rides on the same platform as the ES7, and measures 4968mm long, 1974mm wide and 2960mm between the wheels. Those dimensions line it up neatly against other mid-sized electric SUVs including the Q8 E-tron, BMW iX and the upcoming Polestar 3.

2023 Nio EC7 has 920 km range - enough to outrun any electric SUV

The Nio EC7 is a luxury electric SUV-coupé developed by the Chinese company Nio. It boasts a spacious and stylish interior designed to feel like a lounge, as well as advanced technology features in the cabin. The EC7 has an impressive driving range of nearly 600 miles on a single charge.

The Audi Q8 E-tron Sportback is a competitor to the Nio EC7, which was unveiled at Nio's annual event. It is a more stylish and sporty version of the Nio ES7 SUV, which was recently released. The Q8 E-tron Sportback is expected to be available in Chinese dealerships starting in May 2023.

It is not clear at this time if the Nio EC7 will be available in the European market. While Nio's chairman William Li did not mention any plans for a European debut during the unveiling of the EC7, it is possible that the company may consider bringing the vehicle to Europe in the future. Nio has recently entered the European market with the ES7 (known as the EL7 outside of China) and the ET5 and ET7 sedans, so it is possible that the EC7 may follow. However, it is important to note that these are just speculations, and the availability of the EC7 in the European market has not been officially confirmed by the company.

The Nio EC7 is marketed as a high-performance and luxurious electric vehicle, with a spacious and stylish interior designed to feel like a living room. It is equipped with advanced technology, such as a LiDAR device on the roof and 32 "high-precision" sensors for level 4 autonomous driving capability. These features make the EC7 one of the most advanced and sophisticated electric vehicles on the market.

The Nio EC7 shares the same platform as the ES7 and has dimensions of 4,968 millimeters in length, 1,974 millimeters in width, and 2,960 millimeters wheelbase. These dimensions put it in competition with other mid-sized electric SUVs such as the BMW iX, the Audi Q8 E-tron, and the upcoming Polestar 3. The EC7's size and features make it a strong contender in the market for high-performance and luxurious electric SUVs.

The Nio EC7 is equipped with a twin-motor, four-wheel drive powertrain that generates 644 hp and 850 Nm (627 pound-feet) of torque. This powertrain allows the EC7 to accelerate from 0 to 62 miles per hour in just 3.8 seconds, which is slightly faster than the ES7 due to its more aerodynamic design. This impressive acceleration, combined with the EC7's luxurious features and advanced technology, make it a formidable competitor in the market for high-performance electric SUVs.

All new Nio ES8 unveiled during 2022 Nio Day

At Nio Day 2022, the company unveiled the brand new ES8, an all-purpose smart electric flagship SUV that caters to the needs of family life, work, socializing, and adventure. The ES8 was introduced alongside the EC7, Nio's other electric SUV model

The all-new ES8 is now built on the NT 2.0 platform. It has dimensions of 5,099 mm length, 1,989 mm in width, and 1,750 mm in height, and it has a wheelbase of 3,070 mm - significant improvement over the outgoing ES8.

The second-generation electric drive platform from Nio gives the ES8 the ability to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds while producing a maximum power output of 480 kW and 850 Nm of torque - again marked improvement when compared to the NT 1.0 based ES8.

Nio offers the ES8 in three variations: the normal, Executive, and Signature versions.

The standard version of the new ES8 starts at RMB 528,000 ($75,500) and comes with a standard range battery pack option with a capacity of 75 kWh and claimed 465 km of range. The 100 kWh model starts at RMB 586,000 ($83,800) and has a claimed range of 605 km. Customers can opt to lease the battery, which drops the price to a total of RMB 458,000 ($65,525) for both models, with monthly leasing rates of RMB 980 ($140) or RMB 1,680 ($240) for the 75 kWh and 100 kWh models, respectively.

The ES8 Executive model is available for purchase at a starting price of RMB 548,000 ($78,400) for the 75 kWh pack and RMB 606,000 ($86,700) for the 100 kWh version. Both models offer Nio's Battery as a Service (BaaS) program, with a car purchase price dropping to RMB 478,000 ($68,400) and monthly leasing fees of RMB 980 ($140) or RMB 1,680 ($240) for the 75 kWh and 100 kWh versions, respectively.

Currently, the Signature version of the ES8 is only available with a 100-kWh battery pack. It has a starting price of RMB 638,000 ($91,300) or RMB 510,000 ($73,000) thanks to the Battery as a Service (BaaS) program. The monthly leasing fee for the battery is RMB 1,680 ($240).

All versions will be at some point available with the largest 150 kWh battery pack which apparently gives the car 900 km of range on a single charge but the prices have not yet been released for this option.

Nio introduces 500 kW ultra-fast charger that can charge EV in under 12 minutes

Nio unveiled a new high-powered destination charger at NIO Day 2022 on December 24. The charger is capable of delivering up to 500 kW of electricity, making it one of the most powerful charging stations available on the market. It is designed to significantly reduce charging times for electric vehicles, especially those from other manufacturers. In addition to this innovative charger, Nio also operates a network of unique battery swap stations, which provide another convenient option for electric vehicle drivers to quickly and easily replenish their vehicle's power.

According to Nio, its new ultra-fast charger is accessible to all manufacturers of electric vehicles and is available to the public. It is capable of producing a maximum charging current of 660 A, making it one of the highest-powered chargers on the market. With its impressive output, the Nio charger is expected to significantly reduce charging times for electric cars and make the process of charging more convenient and efficient for drivers. It is available to the public, making it accessible to a wide range of electric vehicle owners.

The new ultra-fast charger is capable of delivering an 80% charge to electric vehicles built on the 800 V platform in as little as 12 minutes, provided that the vehicle has at least a 10% charge. For electric vehicles built on the 400 V platform, the charging time is around 20 minutes to achieve the same level of charge. These charging times are significantly faster than those of traditional charging stations and are expected to be particularly convenient for drivers who need to quickly recharge their vehicles while on the go.

Nio's ultra-fast charger is equipped with a 15.6-inch display and features the company's exclusive liquid-cooling technology. These features work together to significantly reduce the weight of the charging cable, making it easy for users to operate the charger with just one hand. The use of liquid cooling also helps to improve the performance and longevity of the charger by keeping it cool and running smoothly. With its lightweight cable and advanced cooling system, the Nio charger is designed to be user-friendly and reliable for electric vehicle drivers.

Nio CEO expects China's automotive supply chain to fully recover by end of March

China abandoned its zero-COVID policy in December, leading to a surge in infections that has impacted the automotive industry. However, the head of Nio (NYSE: NIO) expects the effects on the industry to lessen in the coming months.

William Li, the founder, chairman, and CEO of Nio, said that he expects the supply chain for the automotive industry to stabilize by March or April of next year, taking into account the upcoming Lunar New Year.

According to Li, the reopening process in China will negatively affect the region where Nio is headquartered, as well as the company's supply chain partners. However, Li stated that the negative effects will be temporary and that the supply chain and car industry in China will return to normal in the very near future.

Although Nio set a record high for car deliveries in December with 15,815, the numbers still fell short of expectations.

Nio to bring battery swap stations to the United Kingdom in 2023

Eleanor Sand, the Network Development Lead at Nio, announced that the company will be installing Power Swap Stations (PSS) throughout the United Kingdom in 2023. Sand posted a message on LinkedIn stating that Nio is looking for locations in all cities in the UK to host the stations and encouraged landowners or CPOs to contact the company for more information.

Nio currently operates over 1,300 Power Swap Stations (PSS) in China and just 10 PSS in Europe. The company's founder, William Li, has stated that the goal is to have 1,700 PSS in China by 2023. Nio plans to have 120 PSS in Europe by the end of 2023 and aims to have a total of 4,000 PSS operational worldwide by 2025, with 1,000 of these stations located outside of China. This year, the company plans to build 400 new PSS in China and 110 new PSS in Europe.

Here is the Nio's latest generation 3 PSS in action:

Nio's initial goal was to have 20 Power Swap Stations (PSS) in Europe by the end of 2022, but that target was later revised downward to 17-18 stations by the company's CEO, Qin Lihong. As of December 29, the total number of PSS in Europe is 10, with the tenth and final station launching in Den Hoorn, Netherlands. This station is the third one to be located in the Netherlands. A list of all European PSS, including those that are operating and those still in the planning stages, can be found on the company's website.

Nio, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, has a goal of establishing a presence in 25 countries by 2025. In October, the company expanded into its first European Union countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark. The company is also targeting the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Italy, Hungary, and Spain as part of its international expansion plans.

Nio to complement its upcoming smartphone with a smartwatch

Nio, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, has made an interesting new move by filing an application to register the Nio Watch trademark in China. The application was submitted on December 16, 2022, and it describes the trademark as a scientific instrument, with the status now listed as "pending application."

Nio previously confirmed it is entering the smartphone market and it appears accessories are also in its plans. In July last year Nio CEO, William Li, had a conversation with Nio owners in Fuzhou, where he stated that the firm would be building a new phone model every year, similar to how Apple does it.

While it is also possible that Nio Watch trademark is being filed only to provide legal protection for the brand, a smartwatch would be a great companion device and one that would certainly have a lot of utility when it comes to interacting with your EV.

Nio and CATL's new deal hints at new brand launch

Nio and CATL are long-standing partners, as all of Nio EV's swappable batteries are supplied by CATL. There are some exceptions to other Nio cars that run on CALB batteries, though, but those are limited.

So normally, we wouldn't make much of today's announcement from the two firms, who have committed to take the partnership on a deeper level. The two companies will share expertise in manufacturing and ultimately help Nio speed up its own battery development efforts. Things we are certain are already happening.

However, the partnership will also involve batteries and even technical cooperation on new brands, projects and markets. So it appears Nio is planning on following BYD in diversifying its portfolio with new brands in the near future. We are yet to see what the exact nature of those brands will be, but we'll be on the lookout for more information from Nio.

Nio ET5 shooting brake option to debut in Europe in early summer, exec confirms

The Nio ET5 has a growing popularity not only in China but in Europe as well. Recent rumors from November suggest that the ET5 will get a shooting brake version and there are even a couple of spy shots to confirm.

Today's semi-official news reveals that Nio is planning to release this version in the European market and that the whole car is designed with the European consumer in mind. The information comes from a video circulating Chinese social media, where the company's president talks about the ET5 shooting brake variant.

Nio loses legal battle over ES6 and ES8 naming rights to Audi

The moment Nio announced its plans to expand its electric car business into Europe, the company was served court papers. Audi did not like the fact that Nio’s naming nomenclature resembled its own - the company argued that Nio ES8 is way too similar to Audi S8. Unfortunately for Nio, the courts agreed.

After 15 months of legal arguments, a German court agreed with Audi and found Nio infringing on Audi’s naming rights. The judge did agree that both the Nio ES6 and ES8 names are different from Audi’s S6 and S8, but concluded that adding a letter E to the name is simply not enough. Apparently some people could confuse the electric Nio ES6 for an electric Audi S6.

It’s hard to believe that someone could mistake the Nio for Audi in the first place, but as far as the legalities go - that’s how it is. The judge simply pointed out that “confusion through association” is a real thing and that’s why companies protect their naming rights.

Where does that leave Nio? First of all - it’s not a done deal yet. The company will of course appeal the verdict and the legal shenanigans will continue for a while longer. But as of now, Nio is not allowed to advertise its ES6 and ES8 vehicles in Germany. On top of that, if the verdict remains in place, the company will either have to pay €250,000 fine or the managing director of Nio Germany will face the possibility of a prison sentence of up to 6 months.

Nio joins the price wars: offers discounts of up to $15,000 on its EVs

In an announcement that lit up the Chinese social media, Nio introduced for the first time discounts for its electric cars. What Tesla started nearly a month ago, turned into a race to find who can offer better and bigger deals. But is Nio following the trend or is something else at play here?

Nio sales staff was informed about new incentive packages and discounts available to customers and the deals are really good - as long as you are ready to make the move quickly.

Nio prepares to launch 2 more unannounced EVs in next few months

Nio held an event in Beijing to share its performance figures from the Chinese New Year period. The founder and president of the company was present, answering the questions from the reporters and detailing Nio’s future plans.

During the Q&A session after the conference, Qin Lihong was asked about Nio’s product roadmap and whether the new Nio EC7 and Nio ES8 were going to enter production and deliveries on schedule. In a surprise answer, Qin confirmed that as many as two other vehicles can enter production before the EC7 and the ES8.

Both the EC7 coupe SUV and the full size SUV ES8 were unveiled during Nio Day last year and their deliveries are planned to begin in May of this year. Two additional vehicles would seriously expand Nio’s portfolio of electric cars and would have the potential to seriously increase its customer base.

What cars was Qin Lihong talking about? We have a pretty good idea actually, the Internet and Chinese social media is a real treasure trove. We know that Nio is preparing the debut of the ET5 shooting brake, the company may go as far as calling it the wagon or estate. The car has been spotted numerous times during testing and it did look like a very much finished product in the photos.

Then there is the new Nio ES6, the smaller electric SUV sibling of the ES8. That car has been spotted many times as well and we know the company is moving it from the outdated 1.0 platform to the 2.0 which is used by all of the latest Nio EVs.
