The Nio (EV Brand) Thread

Nio EC6 2.0 is ready to hit the road - homologation photos leak

The updated Nio EC6 based on the new 2.0 EV platform is finally ready for the showrooms and the Chinese government issued its approval certification for the vehicle with a set of photos showing the car in all details.

This isn’t yet the complete filing, a lot of details are still missing but it is enough to compare the new version to the current EC6. Although the two cars share a name and the overall design, there are enough differences between the two versions to say that this isn’t just a mere facelift.

Starting at the front - the new EC6 has a completely different bumper, headlights in the bumper are less pronounced and the DLR lights are now two distinctly separate LED dashes no longer hiding behind a single cover.

The side profile is different as well, gone is the flowing shoulder line that dipped in the middle, replaced with a straight line joining front and rear wheel arches and making the car look more sophisticated. The window line is different and so are the mirrors. But the easiest visual difference to spot are the rear lights - a single uninterrupted LED line that wraps the EC6 from side to side replaces the current tail lights and brings the EC6 in line with the other Nio electric cars. And then there is the adjustable rear spoiler that pops up to aid the aerodynamic performance.

Nio reaches 10,000 battery swaps completed in Europe

First milestone for Nio’s battery swapping technology in Europe has been reached. The company announced that just last night one of its customers performed a battery swap in Norway and it was the cumulative 10,000th swap in the whole of Europe. The company is obviously celebrating with a compulsory photo shoot and some gifts and a certificate for the lucky Nio owner.

Nio already installed 11 battery swap stations in Europe, another six are being commissioned and will open soon. Nio owners have additional access to over 388 thousand charging points across Europe, according to Nio’s app.

The company has a long way to go though, if it wants to catch up to its own results in China. Only six months ago the battery swap count stood at 10 million, back then the company had 999 swap stations operational. That number has gone up significantly and at this moment there are 1,313 swap stations spread across China.

Nio has ambitious plans for its battery swap business, initially the company wanted to add another 400 locations to its existing network this year. That number has been recently revised and now the plan is to add 1,000 stations by the end of 2025 for a total of 2,300 stations.

The European operations are significantly smaller, the first station opened only a year ago in Norway but to speed things up, Nio opened up the battery swap station manufacturing site in Hungary.

Oppo, OnePlus and Vivo smartphones can now work as keys for Nio electric cars

Two Chinese makers announced their phones are now compatible with Nio cars built on the latest NT2.0 platform. Both Vivo and Oppo have a selection of smartphones that from now can be used to unlock the car without the need for keys.

This feature is enabled only on the latest Nio EVs - that includes the ET5, ET7, ES7(sold in Europe as EL7) and EC7. All of those models are based on the updated NT 2.0 platform and the company is going through the process of upgrading its entire electric car lineup to this platform.

Oppo announced that its Find FN2 series, Find X5 series, Reno 9 series together with the OnePlus Ace series smartphones are compatible with Nio vehicles. All the owners need to do is add the digital car keys to their wallet app on the phone and from then on, they can use the smartphone as a car key.

The EUIPO says Nio didn't infringe on Audi's trademark

Last year, Audi filed a lawsuit against Nio in Munich saying that Nio's ES6 and ES8 models infringe on trademark rights and sound a lot like Audi's S6 and S8 sport lineups. The German court ruled in favor of Audi at first. Meanwhile, the Chinese automaker changed the name of its ES7 right before officially announcing it for Europe. It was perhaps a way to get around possible issues with the EL7 (ES7) as well.

However, the European Union Intellectual Property Office said that Nio didn't infringe on Audi's rights after Nio appealed and the ES6 and ES8 models don't sound close enough to Audi's S6 and S8 to cause confusion. Initially, Audi's reasoning was that the ES6 and ES8 are too close to the S6 and S8 models, arguing that some consumers might be misled and think that Nio's cars are actually electrified Audi sport sedans from the S series.

Nio ET5: Europe-bound Tesla Model 3 rival gets estate

New stretched variant of Chinese electric saloon tipped to join saloon sibling in UK later this year

The Nio ET5 electric saloon, arriving in the UK later this year, could also be joined by an estate revealed today in the latest round of Chinese government registry filings.

Set to make its public debut at next month’s Shanghai motor show, the new model is thought to be the one teased by Nio CEO William Li when he said the Tesla Model 3-rivalling ET5 “and another” car suited in size to the UK would arrive by the end of 2023.

Like the ET5, which will be Nio’s debut entry into the UK market, the estate will be exclusively leased via a subscription model, rather than being sold.

The subscription model has proven successful for Chinese brand Lynk&Co (owned by Geely) in establishing itself in select major European markets.

Nio ET5 Touring is the 490hp station wagon we’ve been all waiting for

The station wagon version of the very successful Nio ET5 has been finally revealed by the Chinese MIIT homologation body and we gotta say - this is one good looking wagon. As for the name, there are few rumors swirling around. According to one source it’ll be called ET5 Kombi while apparently some Nio workers are referring to it as Nio ET5 Touring. Whatever the name it is given, it is coming to Europe and that has to be great news.

The Nio ET5 Wagon (or Kombi) has been approved by the MIIT for production and sales in China and thanks to the official filing, we have a closer look at some of the technical details and we have the first official photos. This version is based on the regular Nio ET5 and - surprisingly - both have identical dimensions.

This isn’t a bigger and more capacious electric car, this simply is Nio ET5 with a bigger and easier accessible trunk than its 4-door sedan sibling. The importance of this car cannot be undermined, while the global sales of estate (wagon) vehicles have been slowly declining, in Europe alone over 1 million of them were sold in 2021. That’s 64 percent of total global sales.

First Nio ET5 batch arrives in Norway, deliveries starting this month

First units of the Nio ET5 have finally arrived in Norway and are being prepared for deliveries at Nio’s distribution center in Aros. The ET5 is Nio’s best-selling model in China, representing over half of all cars sold by the company last month.

Eager customers probably can’t wait to finally get their hands on one of those and the good news goes beyond the delivery dates scheduled for this month. Thanks to Nio’s clever BaaS (Battery as a Service) solution, buyers who opt for it will not only save on purchase price but will get a serious perk.

Although renting the battery comes at a monthly cost of around €124, it brings the cost of the Nio ET5down to just over €36,000. That price is just below the Norwegian threshold for VAT on electric cars which otherwise would have been charged at nearly €1,900. Once all the local taxes and delivery charges are included, the total price without the battery works out at just over €38,000.

Nio’s 3rd generation battery swap stations are going live on March 28

Nio is ramping up the production of the third generation of its battery swapping stations, with the volume production to be achieved in May. The company is bringing the first 10 stations online on March 28 - a month earlier than it originally planned.

The 3rd generation PSS (Power Swap Station) was officially unveiled during the Nio Day 2022 last December. The latest PSS can store 21 batteries, which is a huge step up from the previous model which was capable of storing 13 batteries. For comparison, the first generation PSS could only store 5 batteries at once.

While the PSS holds 21 batteries in storage, it can service 408 vehicles in a 24-hour period, that’s 17 electric cars charged every hour or one EV every 3.5 minutes. That’s theoretical capacity of course, assuming an even distribution of arriving vehicles around the clock and in real life the number will be lower, but it will still be impressive.

For the first time, Nio’s PSS comes equipped with two LiDAR sensors and its own Nvidia Orin processors. This, together with the ADAS on Nio vehicles using the PSS ensures perfect alignment every time and no issues during the battery swap procedure.

First Nio EC7 EVs ready for test drives, customers allowed to lock in orders

Test drives of the new Nio EC7 are to begin this coming Monday (April 10) across China and customers will be allowed to start locking in their orders. The company is preparing for the first deliveries to take place in May and the test vehicles are already on their way to local showrooms.

It is a busy weekend ahead for Nio employees, they will have only a couple of days to get acquainted with the new Nio EC7 before the showroom doors open on Monday morning. The company confirmed that the first test drives will be available from 10 am sharp.

Customers who want to place a guaranteed order can still do so, all that is needed is a small RMB 5,000 $730) deposit, and in return, the company doubles its value to RMB 10,000. The customers have until April 16 to place locked-in configuration orders and the deliveries of those vehicles will begin in mid-May.

Nio EC7 officially goes into production on April 17 and the deliveries will then be processed in the order in which the vehicles were configured by customers with those who paid first getting their vehicles earlier. The vehicles with the optional rear comfort package and the ones with Coral Red interior will go into production in July and August respectively.

Nio ET5 Tourer: sleek electric estate expected in Europe this year

Estate version of hotly anticipated saloon packs up to 480bhp and claims a maximum range of 621 miles

Chinese premium EV brand Nio will launch an estate version of the ET5 saloon later this year, making it the first to offer such a model.

The new ET5 Tourer will be aimed at European customers – and will launch in the EU later this year. It will eventually be offered in right-hand drive for sale in the UK, when the firm enters the market.

“It’s a very beautiful car. It has a lot of interior space, including rear head room,” Nio CEO William Li told Autocar ahead of the Shanghai motor show on Tuesday.

Li last year said that Nio would launch in the UK at the end of 2023 and has already hired a managing director to oversee sales of the brand here: Matt Galvin, previously commercial operations boss at Volvo UK.

The ET5 Tourer will be sold in the UK alongside the Nio ET5 saloon, a rival to the Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Ioniq 6.

Nio will also introduce battery-swap stations in the UK to allow owners to change their batteries in around five minutes, giving the brand a unique selling point if it can install a decent-size network.

Nio to launch Europe-focused small electric cars from £23,500

New value brand, codenamed Firefly, will be launched in 2024 with EVs that support battery-swapping

Chinese premium EV maker Nio will next year launch a new entry-level brand for mass-market vehicles, focused on the European market.

The Nio Group is working on two projects – Alps and Firefly – for two affordable standalone brands. Both are working titles, with final brand names yet to be decided.

Project Firefly is focused on developing a new brand for European-focused entry level cars, with a reported target price of around £23,500, which would likely pitch it against the likes of the forthcoming Volkswagen ID 2.

Nio ES6 and ET7 launched

Nio took to the stage at the Shanghai Auto Show and finally launched the 2023 Nio ET7 electric sedan. At the same event, the company unveiled the refreshed Nio ES6 with pre-orders for both electric cars now open.

The 2023 Nio ET7 brings a host of updates and upgrades to the company’s electric flagship sedan. The interior has been refined, and the vehicle now sports a more comfortable suspension setup. The prices start at $66,600 for the version with a 75 kWh battery while the 100 kWh option demands $75,000.

The new Signature version of the Nio ET7 starts at nearly $78,000 and as it is with all Nio vehicles, the ET7 can be bought without the battery. The BaaS lowers the price to $56,000 for the standard models and to $59,000 for the Signature version. The monthly battery rentals are set at $142 or $244 depending on battery size. All prices at current exchange rates of course.

The 2023 Nio ET7 comes with a 10-year warranty without any mileage restrictions. Each customer gets 4 battery swaps per month free of charge and the onboard internet connectivity is free for life. Putting a deposit down for the vehicle before June qualifies for a free home charger or 2 extra battery swaps per month.

Second-gen Nio ES6 due in UK with new platform and 490bhp

Chinese premium brand unveils major overhaul for its best-selling model, set to arrive in the UK next year

Chinese premium EV brand Nio has launched the second generation of its ES6 SUV – which is tipped to form part of its line-up when it comes to the UK next year – at the Shanghai motor show.

The Audi Q8 E-tron and Mercedes-Benz EQC rival was launched in 2019 and is the firm’s best-selling model in China. Despite only being three years old, this second-generation model is a comprehensive reworking, including a switch to a new platform.

While previously sharing its core architecture with the larger Nio ES8, the ES6 – expected to be called the EL6 in Europe – now uses the same steel platform as the Nio ET5 saloon. As a result, it has a slightly stretched wheelbase and sits around 50mm lower.

Much of the focus of the second-generation ES6 has been on revising Nio’s design language and upgrading the interior quality and feel of the car.

Kris Tomasson, Nio’s vice-president of design, described it as a “more evolved product” that featured styling that was “a hybrid of SUV and saloon language”.

Nio wants to improve road safety by using new 4D radar

Nio signed a contract with Dutch company NXP Semiconductors to use their latest 4D imaging radar technology. The 4D radar significantly improves the performance of current tech and adds functionality as it can accurately measure distance, speed, angle, and elevation even in limited visibility scenarios.

This new solution will allow Nio vehicles to “see” up to 300 meters ahead, the cars will be able to detect other vehicles and safely classify them even recognizing vulnerable road users. Complex situations such as city driving or high-speed highways are no longer an issue for this new technology, according to Nio and NXP.

Nio to launch ES6 on May 24

Nio ES6 was unveiled to the public during the Shanghai Auto Show and it received a very warm welcome from the public. At the time the company did not disclose the official launch date and did not talk about prices of the new electric SUV.

According to local news, Nio is planning to launch the ES6 on May 24. The news reporters got that information after visiting several Beijing Nio stores. The show and test vehicles are arriving at the showrooms within days and will be officially available from the launch date.

Customers who ordered the new ES6 first will have priority for test drives. The new updated ES6 will only be available in the Sport trim with both Performance and Signature versions now reserved for the larger ES7.

The Nio ES6 is based on the new EV 2.0 platform that substantially improves on the previous technology. Although the ES6 is going to be the cheapest Nio on the market, the company is refusing to engage in the ongoing price-cutting campaigns and is standing firm by its pricing. The CEO reiterated the position of the company and refused to be dragged into the price war.

Nio ET5 Touring visits Norway for a photoshoot

Forget about Nio ET5 Touring coming to Europe - it’s already here! The company has brought at least one unit of its first electric wagon to Norway for a marketing photoshoot, and someone thankfully shared at least some of the images on social media. Nio may not be happy about that, but we don’t care - here it is.

In beautiful Airspace Blue the Nio ET5 Touring fits the Norwegian landscape like a glove - this has to be one of the best-looking wagons on the market. For people who don’t really like sedans and can’t fathom getting an SUV, the trusty load-lugging wagon is the only sensible choice. While Europe may have many wagon models on sale, there is only one electric wagon, and that’s the MG5. But when it comes to performance wagons - ET5 has no competition at this moment.

Nio ET5 Touring enters a very contested niche that’s been occupied by the likes of the BMW M3, which only recently returned with a wagon version. Then there’s the Audi RS4 and AMG CLA Shooting Brake. The slightly bigger segment is represented by BMW M5, Audi RS6, and AMG E-Class, but at 4.8 meters, the ET5 is simply too small to compete with the big boys.

Nio's UK swap stations will change EV batteries in under five minutes

Chinese EV brand bound for 2024 UK launch with swapping station planned to arrive soon aft

Chinese premium EV brand Nio has launched a third generation of its innovative Power Swap Stations, which can now replace the power pack in one of its models in under five minutes – and they are bound for the UK.

The first examples of the reworked stations have gone live in China and the firm has begun producing them for the European market at a new production plant in Hungary.

Nio now has more than 1300 Power Swap Stations in service in its home nation and has completed more than 20 million swaps. In Europe, Nio has launched in Norway, the Netherlands and Germany, and it has 13 stations live across those markets, with more than 12,000 swaps completed.
