Updated Nissan X-Trail revealed
Nissan has whipped the wraps off the updated fourth-generation X-Trail in urban-focused Tekna and rugged N-Trek guises.
Introduced in 2021, Nissan has handed handed the fourth-generation X-Trail a mid-cycle update, with the Japanese automaker revealing the refreshed current iteration in Tekna and N-Trek flavours.
Both models feature a redesigned front fascia with a more pronounced ‘V-Motion’ grille. Urban-focused Tekna grade sports 20-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, and gloss black bumpers, wheel-arch trim, side sills and mirror housings. Round back, the Tekna features a body-coloured rear bumper and a new LED taillamp array. The Tekna also introduces two new exterior colours, Sukomo Blue and Coastal Dune, both of which also available in a two-tone finish.
The more rugged N-Trek model rolls on 19-inch alloy wheels, and feature black roof rails, lower bumper cladding, and N-Trek badging. Magma Red trim is also present. Adding to its adventure-focused proviso, the cabin features waterproof upholstery and rubber mats. A panoramic sunroof is also included with the package.
New interior material options include chestnut brown quilted leather, complemented by brown wood-effect console trim, and synthetic leather. Among various subtle updates to the cabin, the X-Trail ships with a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment, heated front/rear seats and steering wheel, and three-zone climate control. The sliding second row features a 40:20:40 split. A Bose 10-speaker sound system is available at additional cost.

Nissan is trying to find a middle ground that keeps everyone happy, and at a recent global media event, the company gave us a first look at the all-new 2027 Nissan Rogue. The new version of the popular SUV is getting e-POWER technology. Along with this reveal, Nissan finally confirmed what many off-road fans have been waiting for: the Xterra is officially coming back. Both of these vehicles are part of a big plan Nissan calls "Mobility Intelligence for Everyday Life."
The Nissan Rogue (marketed as Nissan X-Trail outside of the US) has been a huge part of the company's success for a long time. It first hit the streets back in 2000. Since then, Nissan has sold nearly 10 million units of the Rogue and its global twin. In the United States alone, drivers have bought almost 4 million of these SUVs. Because it is such a top seller, Nissan is being careful with how they update it. They need the 2027 model to be a hit in the US and Canada, their most important markets.
The big story for the 2027 model year is the addition of the e-POWER system. Nissan likes to call this technology "innovative," but it is actually a clever twist on things we have seen before. While it is technically a hybrid, it drives much more like the EVs you see at charging stations. The system uses two electric motors to turn the wheels, but instead of plugging the car into a wall, there is a gasoline engine under the hood. This engine does not touch the wheels at all. It only runs to create electricity for the motors.
This setup makes the Rogue almost an Extended Range Electric Vehicle - almost because there's no battery. It gives drivers the smooth and quiet feel of electric cars without the worry of finding a charger. You still go to the gas station like you always have, but the car uses that fuel to power its internal electric components. It is a way to bridge the gap for people who are not quite ready to go "full battery" yet. Nissan says this provides a responsive feel and plenty of confidence in different driving conditions.

DRIVEN | Facelifted Nissan X-Trail touches down in South Africa with significantly lower prices
The Nissan X-Trail has taken many forms, from the boxy first- and second-generation models to the smoother third iteration and the fourth generation, which attempted to strike a balance between the two design philosophies.
The facelifted model, launched in South Africa this week as part of the company’s strategy to bolster its imported range after ending local production, builds on the latter with a fresh look and new interior technologies aimed at keeping it current amid fierce competition from Chinese rivals. The company is also planning to introduce the new Tekton SUV later this year.
Lower prices for the new X-Trail
As before, the Nissan X-Trail is available in three variants, but prices have been reduced significantly. The 2.5 Visia kicks things off at R599,900, down from the previous version's R687,900 sticker price. The 2.5 Acenta occupies the middle ground at R688,900, while the 2.5 Acenta Plus all-wheel drive tops the line-up at R770,900. These models previously cost R751,900 and R812,900 respectively.
This not only makes the X-Trail significantly cheaper than the recently introduced Toyota RAV4, which starts at R770,500, but also brings it closer in price to numerous Chinese alternatives such as the Chery Tiggo 8, Haval H6 and American-badged Ford Territory, all of which start in the R500,000 to R600,000 range.

Post-Rosslyn era: Nissan SA turns to imports to reclaim local market share
Nissan South Africa says it has completed its transition from a local manufacturer to a national sales company and is now turning its attention to rebuilding market share through an expanded range of imported models.
Speaking at the launch of the updated Nissan X-Trail, managing director Juan Wheeler said the first six months following the announcement that production would end at the Rosslyn plant had been focused on winding down manufacturing operations before attention shifted to new products.
"To be honest, the first six months after we made the announcement has been hectic," Wheeler said.
"To clean out the plant and hand that over has been a very busy period for all of us to get that done by the end of June."
With that process now complete, Wheeler said the company could focus entirely on its future as an importer.
"Now that those six months are settled, we can focus on our next step, from being a manufacturer to becoming a national sales company. Today is the first new product that we are bringing in, so now we can focus on the new products that we want to bring in for the rest of the year."
X-Trail flagship
Wheeler described the X-Trail as Nissan's current flagship model in South Africa, a position it will hold until the arrival of the Patrol later in the company's financial year.
"It's very important for us. At this point in time it's our halo vehicle, so it's the top model that we've got in the range."
He added that the model showcases the technology Nissan continues to offer while reinforcing the company's commitment to the South African market.
"We want people to see the technology that Nissan's improved, that Nissan is investing in Africa, and more importantly in South Africa."

Earlier this month, we reported that the updated, fourth-generation Nissan X-Trail will land in South Africa in July 2026. Well, it’s finally here, with the local arm of the Japanese automaker releasing pricing and specifications for the revised model lineup.
Locally, the refreshed X-Trail retains the pre-facelifted model’s 2.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine, which produces 135 kW and 244 N.m of torque – the former and latter available from 6 000 and 3 600 r/min, respectively. Power is delivered to the road via a front-wheel drivetrain – the latter exclusively coupled with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The updated X-Trail includes a trio of drive modes: Eco, Normal, and Performance. Nissan claims an average fuel consumption of 7.4 L/100 km.
The exterior features “sturdier” design cues, the automaker says, with a new front grille and bumper contributing to the midsize SUV’s stance. The entry-level, Visia model is equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, with the mid-spec, Visia derivative and Visia+ plus flagship upgrading to 18- and 19-inch items, respectively.
Inside, all models feature a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, replete with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone screen mirroring. Acenta and Acenta+ variants gain digital instrumentation, dual-zone climate control, and electrically adjustable front seats with heating functionality. Top-spec trim also includes a head-up display.
