2026 Nissan X-Trail Nismo debuts in Japan with refined e-4FORCE AWD system
Nissan announced the first-ever Nismo edition of its X-Trail SUV. The company turned the family-friendly X-Trail into a performance SUV with improved dynamics, great cornering and refined ride. It also offers the new, more aggressive styling and sporty interior. However, there's no performance gain this time from the Nismo badge.
The 2026 X-Trail Nismo is equipped with the already familiar 105 kW 1.5-liter petrol generator and a small battery pack that supply a 150 kW electric motor at the front and a 100 kW one at the back. Nissan claims that the e-4FORCE electric all-wheel drive system has been retuned, but doesn't provide more details.
The suspension gets new springs and Kayaba Swing Valve dampers, helping maintain body control without losing comfort. Nissan also reduced the clearance by 29% creating more downforce for extra stability at higher speeds.

Having recently reduced the prices of the turbocharged derivatives in its Magnite crossover range, Nissan South Africa has now slashed pricing – albeit temporarily, it seems – across its X-Trail line-up.
The Japanese firm’s local division took the decision to cut pricing for all 3 variants in the X-Trail portfolio while introducing what it describes as a “new model year” update. The latter includes a wireless charging pad for all derivatives, along with “approach unlock” and “walk-away lock” functionality.
So, just how much has Nissan SA lopped off each X-Trail derivative’s starting price? Well, the entry-level X-Trail 2.5 Visia CVT 5-seater had previously been available from R687 900 but is now offered at R587 900 (a considerable R100 000 more affordable than before).
Meanwhile, the mid-tier and likewise front-wheel-drive X-Trail 2.5 Acenta CVT 5-seater now comes in at R666 900, some R85 000 down from its previous sticker price of R751 900. Finally, the flagship X-Trail 2.5 Acenta Plus 4WD CVT (which is a 7-seater as standard) has had its price cut by R63 000, from R812 900 to R749 900. It’s not clear how long these price reductions will remain in effect.

Nissan strengthens South African presence with new X-Trail and Magnite Kuro models
Nissan’s ongoing commitment to South Africa was underscored last week with the introduction of two more models to its current product line-up, says Maciej Klenkiewicz, managing director of Nissan South Africa and Independent Markets Africa.
There are more model launches in the pipeline.
Speaking at the launch of the model year change for the iconic seven-seater Nissan X-Trail as well as the second edition of the Nissan Magnite Kuro, Klenkiewicz said he was proud of the company’s legacy in South Africa.
“We have been in this country for 60 years. I am always super excited when I travel across South Africa in my Nissan Navara Warrior and see examples of this, like old models of the Champ (the 1400 half-ton bakkie, which ended production in 2008 after a 37-year production run) lasting so long.”
Market needs
Nissan’s intentions remain the same: to ensure that the vehicles it produces are properly suited to the needs of the market, he says.
The updated versions of the X-Trail and the Magnite followed the launch of the Navara Warrior by Premcar earlier this year and then the Navara Stealth, both of which are proving popular with motorists and consumers alike, while the Magnite had also been complemented by a panel van variant, which the market had well received.
The Warrior, the apex off-road version of the Navara, is performing above expectations with 40 vehicles being adapted at the Rosslyn plant, while the Magnite continues to be a segment leader.
There will be two further SUVs sourced from India, which is also the home of the Magnite, in the new financial year, as well as the eagerly awaited launch of the Right-Hand Drive version of the all-new Nissan Patrol, which will be launched in South Africa and Australia.

The new X-Trail, the latest iteration on the model that was first launched in 2001, pioneering the global SUV segment in the automotive market, adds walk-away hands-free locking and unlocking functionality as well as wireless charging.
The price of the three models, the entry level Visia, Accenta and top range Accenta Plus, have also been given introductory prices of R587 900 down from R687 900, R666 900 (R751 900) and R749 900 (R812 900), respectively.
The model year change is the latest evolution, says Nissan Africa X-Trail product manager Mustafa Gamal, for a vehicle that has undergone four significant model changes since its introduction almost a quarter of a century ago, selling more than 7-million units globally, 50 000 of which have been in South Africa.
Built with the best road clearance in its class, an added boon for South Africa’s current road conditions, and equipped with Nissan’s ProPILOT unique driver assistance system, which helps manage overtaking, following distances and even parallel parking, the X-Trail is packed with mod-cons inside and out for comfort and performance, highlighted by a five-star NCAP rating.

Nissan has announced plans to double the size of its Nismo performance line-up as part of its broader recovery plan, while also committing to expanding the “market availability” of such models. So, will South Africa be included in this expansion?
Well, while Nissan SA didn’t completely shut the door on the idea, it did tell Cars.co.za that “there are no confirmed plans at this stage to introduce additional Nismo models into the South African market”.
“We continue to regularly evaluate our product line-up and assess opportunities that are relevant and suitable for our local customers, and will share updates should there be any developments in future,” the company’s local division added.
Though it’s not yet clear which global vehicles are next in line to gain Nismo upgrades, the Japanese firm confirmed it would reveal a “special Nismo concept model” at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2026 in January next year.
