the Novatel Syndrome?

Has anyone formulated a step by step "this is how you do it" for novatel cards? Seems to be alot of issues getting them going, and rather embarressing when someone phones you up and bitches that this 3G service doesn't work when you have been ranting and raving to them about how good it is (I have option card). So was just wondering :

1.) What are Vodacom doing about the Novatel story?

2.) What steps can be taken in trying to get it going?

I cannot begin to describe how I hate this card. It takes me AT LEAST 10 to 15 minutes to establish a connection after starting my laptop. First I need to go into Hardware Manager to sort out the initialisation problem that has to do with the IRQ clash as described elsewhere on this forum. (This I have to do each and every time after a restart). Only once that's been sorted out, can the dashboard be started (starting it prior to sorting out the IRQ problem, causes all sorts of other problems in dashboard, of which the all too familiar crashing of the software is an almost certainty). Often dashboard will not recognise the card. To solve this, I have to remove and re-insert the card. (Fortunately one doesn't have to go through the IRQ problem routine again if Windows hasn't been restarted – however, removing the card often causes dashboard to crash and once it's crashed, a restart of the laptop is compulsory, and once it's been restarted, the IRQ routine has to be carried out again. (Closing dashboard before removing the card sometimes prevents this, but other times dashboard hangs during the closing down process). And so it goes on and on and on. If the signal strength is marginal, the problems with dashboard increase exponentially! I don't even try to establish a connection if I have less than 20 min to half an hour – it simply cannot be done and as a result of which, the R599 a month my company is spending on the service, is to a large extend a waste of money. (I had very few of these problems with the Option card – only the occasional crashing of dashboard). Did I mention that I hate this card? I believe that Vodacom should immediately see to it that these cards are withdrawn from the market and replaced with the Option cards if they are really serious about their service, or even better still something that doesn't come with the Dashboard software.

A friend of mine is also having endless problems with the dashboard/novatel card. The latest is that he has to change profiles to get it to connect at all! Today he even had to reinstall the dashboard to get it to work. He is sick and tired of phoning the help desk.

Yes, that's another issue. Often all of the above fails to solve the connection problems. Deleting the profiles and recreating them will sometimes then solve the issue.

v3g, seems like there is a very known issue with these cards. Vodacom did so well in the beginning days with the Option cards, and when I was in the UK I did not see 1 Novatel card in any of the Vodafone shops. Please can we have some input here. Seems like this one little issue (Novatel cards) is starting to undo all the good work you have done todate. Is there a firmware update for these cards? New drivers?

We're in constant communication with the vendor around these issues. If I don't get decent feedback today, I'll escalate to the nth degree.

As a general question:

Has the 64K sim made any difference on the Novatel card, especially in making and keeping connections and switching profiles?

nope 64k made noooo diff.problem is 1 has to get the card started b4 the sim is even recognised....and therein squats the toad!l have ,as stated in previous posts, many fixes that were sent to me by Novatel themselves and it takes a sh!tload of time b4 the proper fix is loaded 4 a specific error message . 90% of the time its an inf or pnf thats not written to the inf file.....clearly this is a software problem as if syntaxed correctly these should be written automatically ! My ? to novatel ,why write fixes and not better software ???Lipo!!!

Desperate!

I picked up my Novatel card last Thursday and still no-one can help me connect. I've called the 082155 customer support number and spent two 30something minute calls where we uninstalled/re-installed/uninstalled/re-installed/uninstalled/re-installed the software and drivers...you get the picture? They eventually referred me to the Vodacare Customer shop who took my laptop and uninstalled/re-installed/uninstalled/re-installed/uninstalled/re-installed the drivers and eventually told me they could not help and told me I should take the stuff back to Auto-Page, as they could do nothing further for me (huh?...come on Vodacom...that's it? Nothing? Not even cancel my card & contract!)
Then I phoned my mate who had recommended the Vodacom 3G service to me and he couldn't help me either, it seems he's happily surfing his life away using an Option card.
I'm not the worlds best IT guy, but I do make a living in the computer hardware service business so I'm not such a doffy either. I went to http://www.business.vodafone.com/mobileofficeroot/enuk/p_software_tscs16.jsp and downloaded the latest software/driver and after reading up on this forum, I went to the Mecer web site and checked for new PCMCIA drivers and also fiddled around in the resources tab. In fact I've done everything anyone on the forum has suggested and still no connection!

Why the heck is Vodacom still supplying Novatel cards when they know they don't work??? I'm ready to take this thing back to Auto-Page (as soon as I have 2hrs to spare 'cos they're gonna want to go through the whole uninstall/re-install processes as well.
Up to now I've had a great relationship with Vodacom. My phone contract is up for renewal this month....Hello MTN.
I guess you can tell I'm fumming mad already.

Inov8, If you got the card from Autopage then VodacomPS can't help you much. You've got to work through Autopage. Trust me, I share the same dilemma.

It could be though that you have a fault card. Get Autopage to swap it out.

I have a Novatel card and while the dashboard does give me some trouble I am usually able to get a good stable connection for a few hours at least. Depending on the network congestion. High traffic times = poor connectivity for me.

082 155 and the data help desk will help anyone with a data card, irrespective where you bought it. Some forumites even imported their own cards and still got support from 155.

If you have to swap it out, you'll need to work through the shop you bought it from.

I've had my fair share of problems with the Novatel 3G card. After much intervention from v3g, techs at Voda World, base station tweaks and the like, I'm still getting the odd disconnect but have managed to work around it and can use the datacard the way it was intended.

I'm due for an upgrade in June and would like to get a second 3G card for the Home PC or wife's Notebook but I'm afraid she will not be able to understand the workarounds associated with the Novatel card...

I have never had an Option card but would love to have a product that is easy to use and understand and not require a degree in IT and Patience to operate.

my 2c worth...

Problem is, there are no Option cards available. The local Vodacom SP people have been trying for some time to get an Option card, without any luck. (And I know they are trying their best, since I've received nothing but excellent service and assistance from them)

V3G - any further info available regarding this card? Can't find any info on the net about such a card.

Well i'm ony my 2nd Novatel card, first one went within the first week i got it. Luckily i went through VodacomSP so they just swopped it out. Second one is doing ok so far, i do however get issues sometimes with the dash, but luckily don't have to go through all kinds of work around.

However my dash has been crashing somewhat randomly to such an extend that i'm actually online without the dash..Dunno how it happens, i just get some C++ error, the dash collapses but my connection remains intact and it continues to work fine [even switches bearers etc]. How's that for irony :P

Some of you have reported config errors on your laptop when using the Novatel cards:

If you go to Device Manager. Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager.
Expand the Modems, the Multifunction adapters and the Ports category.
An error code will usually appear in the properties of the Parent driver under the Multifunction adapter.

Can you let me know this code?

Tx!

Dell D800, WinXP Pro; No error under multifunction device.

Error reported under Novatel Wireless UMTS Modem Secondary Port : "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)
Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device."

Hope this is what you're looking for?

We've seen this error code produced before due to a clash with a bluetooth device. Not to sure if this is relevant to your installation?
