The Official Biltong Enthusiasts Thread

Just use some cellphone charger for the fan. Works for me!

A voltage of around 4v to 5v is probably correct on a 12v fan in a biltong box for the right speed, so yes, an old phone charger would probably do the trick nicely.

For my home made box I installed a 12cm 12v PC case fan and run it off a 1.5v-12v transformer which allows me to control the fan speed depending on ambient humidity and temperature which is great.

As I understand it 12v fans are considerably less expensive than 220v fans, and probably makes up the bulk of the cost of the Mellerware box.

There is clearly an issue with the fan in the Melleware box. Have read a number of comments on this and other forums when mine packed up last week after seven months of service. It has a two year warranty, but that doesn't really help if you have R150 worth of meat hanging in the box when the fan dies. Due to the design (light and fan at top pushing air through holes at the bottom) the box is useless without the fan.

I gave the Mellerware replacement box to my dad last week, so cannot measure, but suspect the fan is a standard 8cm fan. This could easily be replaced with a 12v fan attached to a transformer of some sort.

Buying a fan heater next. Putting it onto a thermostat and into the intake pipe. Then I think I will be sorted, last attempt went well but took too long to dry.

Grabbed the biltong king at the Kalahari Black friday sale set me back R200 with voucher.

This is my first attempt.

Ive said this before somewhere here. Theres a cheap ellies transformer at Pick n Pay and Game. Got mine for R50 at Ellies factory shop. I use it on a home made box (from an old PC) and a Pc fan and it works fine.

I am enjoying my 1st batch. It's almost finished.

Can you maybe post a picture on link to the product?

my first batch is busy marinating at the moment, got a maker for Christmas like i wanted with some spice from crown.

have mixed Worcester sauce and brown viniger with a little spice and letting it sit for about 2 hours. will then coat with spice and hang it.

i didnt get a bulb yet though, but some say for the first day you shouldnt have the bulb on anyway? will pop the fan on though.

1kg of silverside

I got my father one for Christmas and got myself one as well.
Then went to get some silverside from pnp, prepped it with a mix of worcester sauce, brown vinegar and apple cider vinegar. Spiced it with a homemade mix.
It came out yesterday and I went to get more silverside the morning and prepped and hung it last night. This batch has that yellow fat on. Looking forward to when it comes out, used more worcester sauce and tweaked the spice. Hopefully I'll find my right balance, in the meantime I'll enjoy whatever comes out of the drier.

i am about to be shunned, but i hate the fat

Shunned...? Why...? We're a tolerant bunch in this thread :D As long as you don't start with mushroom biltong then there won't be any issues.
