The Official ebook Reader Thread

I created an ePub version of one of CJ Langehoven's stories for children. Mostly as a test of how the OCR process works and how long it would take to convert a book into a digital format.

It's pretty basic, but I would like some testing on other devices and feedback. The story is just 7 pages long (including the cover), but I'm sure if any of you have kids they will love it.

Kootjie Totjie deur CJ Langehoven [ePub]
Language: Afrikaans

Edit:
For the Kindle Owners or Cellphone readers, here's a mobi version as well:
Kootjie Totjie deur CJ Langehoven [mobi]

Please check it out and let me know what you think. If there's a desire for more I might just try to spend the time in digitizing a few I still have from my childhood.

BTW: These works should be in the public domain. 50+ years have passed since CJ Langenhoven's death.

Nicely done!

Just thought I'd put this here as well as in the Kindle thread...

Came across this little piece of kit in my searches today for a better way to handle my book library... http://calibre.kovidgoyal.net/download

Supports a wide variety of Readers and the interface is fairly self-explanatory and it seems to be pretty powerful.

Yes. Highly recommended for any ebook collection. Have been using it from the start and it's an excellent tool to manage your files and works very well at converting between formats.

Is Sue Grafton good? Is she really good? I've got loads on my "to read" list, but if she's really good, maybe I'll get a few.

Ah well, I bought a whole bunch. There are some annoying gaps where there isn't a secure mobipocket format.

I don't know if she's really good, but since you are basically getting them for free you can't really lose out, evn if you don't like them.

I use EPUB so I could get most of them excep, J M N O P U.

I bought the Sony. It sucks. Hopefully the Apple iPad will shake things up so that we start getting decent unlocked e-readers. I recommend waiting another year, while the manufacturors and publishers sort their s**t out.

Yeah, I had to put the first Grafton book on my credit card. I actually converted D and F from ereader to mobi (found something to strip the DRM). Just missed out on K, but I have the adobe epub version. Will tackle that later.

Which Sony do you have? Why does it suck? From what I've read most people are very happy with their Sony Readers except for the 600 and 700 which have glare issues.

The Sony reader uses ePub which should be available from a huge variety of stores so I can't see how it's locked. Unless you are speaking about ebooks not having DRM...

I was using version 0.3 of ereader2html, which wasn't great. A better version is available here:

Works like a charm, formatting is really nice too (ereader -> mobi seems better than epub -> mobi)

Since fictionwise gives 5% extra if you choose secure ereader, it might be more tempting for some.

I'll stick with ePub since that's what my reader supports natively. Luckily it seems that Fictionwise are adding quite a few ePub formatted books.

Please let me know when you've read the first one, and how you found it. I've got quite a backlog building up, but it'll be nice to read a different genre.

Just finished 'A is for Alibi'. It's a standard whodunit without much action. The author tends to add verbose descriptions of people, their clothes etc., most of the time without really adding all that much to the storyline.

If I had to rate it I'd give it a 3/5.

That was quick! Guess I'll save those for lazy holidays then. Thanks for the update

Yeah, I'm on a bit of a reading quest. I'm trying to read 100 books this year. Done 12 so far so I'm a bit behind schedule. Luckily I've got loads of time to read at work!
