The Official NVidia Shield Thread

I have noticed that Asphalt 9 is now available for download from the Store, I suspect since I upgraded the the firmware to the latest version.

Good day Shield owners, please assist.

I just can't seem to make up my mind about the Shield seeing as it is quite a bit of money to part with. However, it does seem like an extremely nice to have toy and I will happily part with said money if I know for a fact that it will live up to the very high expectations I have of it.

Firstly, it's obvious that it's made for the US market which is a shame because GeForce Now especially sound incredible.

I do not have a gaming PC nor do I intend to get one, I'm a console gamer. I would also furthermore like to use the Shield as a retro gaming console.

So, in South Africa, with GeForce Now being my main attraction to the Shield, is it worth it?

I will be using 5GHz WiFi on a 200Mbps (200 down / 100 up) fibre line with a 4K TV.

Secondly, I currently have a Mi Box S which cost me R1500 a year ago and it's perfectly fine for most of my needs. Now the big question is, is the Shield, which is currently 4.5K on geewiz and $190 on Amazon, REALLY worth all that extra money?

I tried the online gaming, but the ping is too bad, no local servers. I have not tried it for standalone games or emulator types, so can't comment on that. I don't have an nVidia card in my PC, so can't stream games either at the moment... Basically I use mine for Youtube, Netflix & Kodi.... that's about it. It is however faster than any Android Media Box I have tried by a lot!

Most definitely not. It's unusable here due to the latency.

No, it's not. If the Mi Box is good enough for you then don't waste your money. The Shield does some things very well for certain use cases but if you're served well by the Mi Box then I don't think you fall into any of those use case categories.

For emulators, retroarch is a bitch to set up.

My work around:

I have an Nvidia card in my pc. I have mame, retro, some other cracked games, steam, etc. installed on my pc. I stream the games from pc to the shield and at the end of the day, it bridges the gap between console and pc. It basically turns your pc into a console and I love it.

As for the Nvidia servers, forget about it. Google is releasing Stadia soon in SA, so there will be more of a move toward that instead.

NVIDIA Shield 8.0.1 update brings the bugfixes for 4K headaches

Android Central - Android Forums, News, ... / by Phil Nickinson / 1h

A few important apps had a problem with 4K playback on Android Pie. This should help.

What you need to know

This is a relatively small but important maintenance release.

It paves the way for a few apps that broke 4K playback to work again.

But some may still require server-side updates.

NVIDIA today has rolled out a maintenance release for the Shield Android TV box (which, by the way, remains the only Android TV box you should buy). It's chock full of bugfixes, but there's one in particular worth focusing on. It's a platform-based fix for some 4K playback gremlins that surfaced after the initial Android Pie update at the end of July.

Here's the take from NVIDIA itself, via its forums:

We just released software upgrade 8.0.1 which is a big step towards resolving the 4K streaming issue on select apps. We expect most apps will resume 4K soon via upcoming server-side updates. We'll keep updating this thread as apps return to 4K.

The update is available now and takes just a few minutes to download and install.

Here's the full changelog, also via the forums:

I notice a few differences (youtube interface, specifically the menu has changed format). Don't have any 4K media to play so can't comment on that.

Just now spotted this on Amazon.

NVIDIA Shield TV Pro.

I actually don't have issues with the current remote controller. And the volume slide is sexy somewhat.

Yeah the current remote is better than that... but mine broke.

I HATE the touch volume control! Never ever works right and sometimes just has a mind of it's own changing volume at will and the rest of the time when you actually do want to change the volume it just doesn't respond. !@#$ing useless piece of !@#$ing !@#$, !@#$ !!!1!!!!!

I'm hoping the Pro remote is available as a standalone purchase but not holding my breath.

I think there's a way to disable it, no?

I need it to change the volume. I did get a bee in my bonnet at a stage to look for a 3rd party replacement but never found anything.

As I'm about to flatten a 3rd set of batteries I may be annoyed enough to try again.

I thought everyone uses the Fire TV remote.
