The official off side rule thread

It doesnt have to be discussed. However certain users might want to exercise clicking on that link a few times :D

You're only offside if the ref's guide dog sees you :D

I am of the opinion that Ruud's goal was from a well offside position. The shot/pass was made when Van Nistelrooy was behind the last defender - that to me is a simple offside decision.

Make that link a sticky with some nice drawings in MsPaint, as some people still dont get the rule.

Well, now there is a marker and reference. :)

No more insults then. :D

I am not going to sticky it. If it doesn't survive via popularity it deserves to drop out of existence. I just see so many hammering in threads about this issue, that a link was in order. I doubt this will quench the discussions and debate, but that was my 2c worth anyway...

This was covered in the euro section, IT depends on the reason the italian player went off the field.
If he went off un-intentionally (injured had no choice) = then the goal was offside
If he went off intentionally (not injured just walked off)= then the goal was onside

Insults? :D

We not allowed to be sarcastic?

Ok

Sarcasm is good, but insults are not. There are no stupid people on this forum. There may be ignorant people, but if you manage to find your way to this forum your IQ imo is already up there...

There is a difference between not knowing and not being able to know even when presented with information.

People on this forum are all capable of knowing IMO. :)

True, but then maybe the rules should be adjusted for players leaving the pitch. IMO, if a player leaves the pitch, regardless of the reason, he must wait for the ref to allow him back on. That would eradicate the off-side issues.

Makes sense. :)

this does make sense

how could the ref have done anything or given him chance to go off or come back on when he was injured, everything happened so fast

he collided with another player and was forced off the pitch, 2 seconds later a goal

apart from stopping time, there is no way in hell the ref could have let him go off the pitch

that was an offside goal end of story i feel

Its not about when to allow a player off/on the pitch, its about the fact the player was still in play even though he was behind the white line.

But then the issue still remains - how can the ref make that decision spur of the moment - eliminate the grey area and there is no longer an issue.

My thoughts are that behind the white line means he is no longer in play and therefore not in a position to affect play. He could feign injury behind the line just to secure an offside. Rules might be defined, but not easily enforced and therefore not ideal.

But then again, my suggestion could land up becoming an issue because if 2 players clash for a ball and one lands up out of the field of play, should he be barred from taking to the pitch until the ref deems fit? Probably not ideal as well.

So if I saw I could not get to the other teams player before he gets the ball, I could just jump behind the line making him offside??

Same way a ref makes a judgement that a player is diving looking for a free kick, is the same way he makes a judgement if a player is faking injury to get out of play.

The goal was legit.

I just watched the replay again and I must admit, it does actually look more onside than off. He might have been off the pitch but that was his problem - he played Ruud onside.

I criticized the suggestion as well. It is a choice between the lesser of two evils so to speak.
