The official off side rule thread

Yeah...it was really lame that they awarded that dodgy goal to the Netherlands yesterday....not that it would have made a difference but still.

Actually the rules are pretty clear and after watching Blitz today and the replay a few times to be sure, it looks a legit goal. Uefa have stepped in and agreed with the decision based.

This is where we need a poll.

a/ Was Germany's first goal offside or onside?
b/ Was Holland's goal offside or onside?

Both onside in my opinion, clearly by understanding the rule and if it was without watching the replays, as in the case with refs and linesmen, also both onside.

Only people who dont understand the offside rule will think A was offside, this has been shown in the Euro thread.

B.Onside as per the early posts.

Is this still going on?

Geez, even on Cape Talk that had a FIFA ref on. Where he said the German goal was onside.

Give it up and learn the rules before commenting in this section.

I read through the Fifa rulebook to try figure it out... Players may leave the field accidentally (while avoiding a tackle or something) and then rejoin without the ref's permission. If an injured player requires assistance from a doctor, then he is required to leave the field, and then needs the refs permission to rejoin the game.
The Italian dude had gotten injured while accidentally leaving the field of play, and as play hadn't been stopped (by the ref not deeming the injury to be bad enough, or the ball going out of play), he could have rejoined play at any time, meaning he still influenced the offside rule.
(probably mentioned before, but i'm too lazy to read all the posts :P also I couldn't find a single offside guide that mentioned this...)

what if you get injured and land outside the field of play

surely your no longer interfering with play? hense your off the field by force

The point of this thread is to discuss and for some people to learn. You are not the be all and end all authority on football, nor are you modding this thread so please stop your cr@p! People have a right to their opinions and points of view and as someone who claims to understand the rule so well, why not jst explain it in a civilized manner?

they had a ref on super sport last night who said it was offside

the whole world is debating this as well

not just the ppl on this forum

kule cant explain because he does not know :)

Kapl said the goal was "100% correct, without any doubt", quoting article 11.4.1. of the refereeing code that states "an opposing player cannot be offside when one of the last two defenders has left the field of play" - as in the case of Panucci.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhh now i see :), never this before

You don't have to be interfering with play to put someone onside... and as play hadn't been stopped so he could receive attention, he was still 'active' and putting everyone onside.

No, I am going to give you the benefit of the doubt that you will abide by RPM's request for no more attacks before I use ignore.

And I do post in this section - you just dont realise.

no i meant if he gets pushed out of play and injured your not interfering as your no longer on the field

dj put on ignore man trust me it will work out better :)

article 11.4.1. of the refereeing code

awesome!

In section 11.11 (Defender legally off field of play) of FIFA's "advice to referees," it clearly states that "A defender who leaves the field during the course of play and does not immediately return MUST STILL BE CONSIDERED in determining where the second to last defender is for the purpose of judging which attackers are in an offside position. Such a defender is considered to be on the touch line or goal line closest to his off-field position. A defender who leaves the field with the referee's permission (and who thus requires the referee's permission to return) is not included in determining offside position."

I think players can only leave the field if the ref allows them to. If they don't have permission, it's considered accidental, and they may return immediately. So if someone gets injured while off the field, he would still need the ref's permission to 'leave' the game...

or any of the player's could just kick the ball out of play as a sign of good sportsmanship, leaving the ref to evaluate the situation. But how many times have we seen this happening since that rule changed compared to before lol

I agree. Good thread this. There will always be debate around the rule, whether you know it or not.

Makes perfect sense now. I still believe that a lot of the discretion of the ref and "fair-play" unwritten laws need some fine-tuning.

The law seems pretty clear and if this is the final decision then I am surprised that nobody has mentioned the "being a sport" aspect of the goal. Another grey area that - should they have continued play after the defender went down? It was to Italy's detriment on two counts - the loss of a defender, and the onside aspect of where he went down.

Seems even the Netherlands players didnt understand this rule at the time as they looked pretty surprised when the goal wasnt disallowed.
