I've been running for years on the road with earphones. I wouldn't do it in a race but I never took part in a race. I can't do distance without something to keep me occupied, and the Airpods super leaky design allows for enough outside noise to be aware of my environment.
I recently started running with earphones, and I keep the volume low enough to hear cars (though I try to run on quiet roads and on the pavement). No way will I run with them in a race though, you need to be a lot more aware.
