Hi

How do you find Maxed? Reasonable quality and longevity?
Quality is more than reasonable. How long they would last though I don’t know. But they do have different running shoes based on the type of mileage you’d cover. They have shorter distance shoes and ones for longer runs.

Any recommendations for an iOS app to plan / map a running route? I tried Footpath, but it requires a subscription before it becomes useful, which sucks.

I don't map on my phone (ios) but I map on my pc using this website : https://za.mapometer.com/running

I use the nike app to track my run as well as my huawei device. Then I convert and upload my nike run to strava.

Try them out first and see how it goes. You can make a decision from there. There’s no one-size fits all with that one.

Why do you need to replace them?
I use what the shoes come with unless there's a specific issue with them.

My big toe is going through my compression socks(not making a hole) and busting the roof of the shoe, anyone else have experience with this? I don't want to kill these shoes when they're only 300km old or so.
Most runners nowadays have a full upper mesh which prevents this unlike before where you had that stitching near the big toe going across.

The comrades stats is a good place to look. It takes a ton of training, and all sorts of people do it. Not just elite sponsored athletes. It's hard to get through all that training uninjured if you have dodgy shoes.

Pretty much this. Asics stability is the way to go even for people who don't pronate as it prevents plantar issues associated with arch stress. Kayano or GT.

Good video on gait analysis and pronation.

Doesn't help; the mesh wears through (based on my experience).

... I started running ( well walking, with the intent to start running as I lose weight.)

I'm a 147KG now and that's just too damn much.

So I want to be able to run 5KM in 30 minutes

And that feels unattainable at this stage, but we'll see.

Basically I now just do a quick weights training 1 to 2 muscles at a time for 15 to 20 minutes and then I treadmill for 30 minutes, trying to get to 5KM.

IMHO you are better off losing weight first through diet, and other exercise. Maybe rowing, cycling, paddling, swimming.

At 147kg you are going to destroy your joints and tendons with running.

Awesome! well done on starting. Its going to be frustrating, just hang in there. 30 Min on a 5 is quite a decent pace and a great long term goal.

Some advice (even though you didnt ask any) :) :
* Keep a diary of your walks/runs. That way you will be able to see your progress. I found that a visual representation of my progress helps me to stay on track or refocus. Remember every little bit helps, but you will hit a plateau somewhere that you will just have to get through.

* Also try and set a distance goal, not just time. For example try and walk 30 KM a month as a start bump that up to 50 later (or whatever numbers you can manage). The idea is to set a challenging but reachable shot term goal. Dont try to go too fast too soon and allow time for recovery (listen to your body).

* Dont underestimate the value of a decent pair of shoes!

* Keep an eye on your ticker. I personally try and keep my HR below 150 on a relaxed run and below 170 when Im pushing it. When I cycle I keep it below 140. Maybe ask your dr about this.

* stretch

Just a note, I found treadmills horribly inaccurate when it comes to distance.

Lastly, ENJOY. Soon we will have parkruns back. Those are epic motivators.

I kind of agree.(Diet needs working), but I'm not a obese obese 147kg, I have a large build, but I can run easily.

Its not painful to run, I legs just start burning lol.

I played club rugby till 2018 and then got fatter as I spend more time in front of a pc and not moving anymore.

That's a relatively easily attainable goal, I'm really unfit and only recently started running, last week I did just under 11 km in 1h04, so it's possible for anyone probably, but don't push to fast to quickly, I did and I'm still sore from last Saturday. I hurt my left ankle pushing harder than my actual fitness level, sort of regret that now.

It's a lot of fun though and it feels really good attaining these goals that I felt I could never reach.

That's probably fine. just keep it civil on the distance when you catch your groove.

Invariably it goes 5km, then 10km, and suddenly ultra marathons start looking like a plan. I'm heavy (for a runner), 90kg, and I've realized that anything over about 10km just screws me up completely. Getting the bulk of my exercise from canoeing now. The perfect sport for heavier people.

Do some research on intermittent fasting low carb diet. I dropped weight like you won't believe. Once it becomes your normal routine it's easy
So I only eat one meal a day, but I eat at 8PM

And then I eat a lot.

I know what I need to do diet side, it's just difficult because I like food.

What I need is rice and chicken or steak and egg, no sides no nothing.

But I like sides and I like suger, lol.

So I went and bought these: 2 days ago

And it hurts the side of my feet, even though it is my size and wide.

Is this just new shoe and will get better or did I make mistake?

I never wear shoes, so its all new to me. (I use the 5 finger toe shoes)

Agreed, I doubt I would be able to run continuously for more than 10km.

I do like the row machine in the gym, I see some people do canoeing here by the lake (tygervalley), I always look at them and think, that looks cute, but no idea how to get into it, like where do you even buy one and who do I ask to go canoe on the lake.

Where do you canoe?
