I ran the 10K Cradle Cracker yesterday. Not too bad, just an out and back. I was quite chuffed that my first 5K was faster than any 5K I've done since Covid; the second, not so much.

They staggered the start times for the various distances, which was cool; I arrived at 6:30, long after the 42K lot left. Toilet facilities were lacking; hundreds and hundreds of runners, and one urinal and one stall for the men, two stall for the women (I think), and the disabled toilet. Long queues for the women.

Lots of cyclists and bikers on the road. I saw the nemesis of the Hell's Angels: a group of Vespa riders wearing pastel-coloured clothes. :)

It's feeling a bit better today, but will give it a full day of rest today and then see how it goes. Might have to stick to the exercise bike for a couple of days as you suggest.

This will teach me to rush my warmup...
 
Hip feels fine today. Now the big question is if I should try to go for a run this afternoon or give it one more day...

Hip was fine after a threshold run last Thursday but then it felt like my ear issue was acting up again. Haven't done any running while trying to see if it develops into something more severe. Have been putting running off for one more day for the past few days, but think today is the day I need to give it a go again. Still feel a bit foggy in the head, but it doesn't look like it's developing into something more severe...
 
Hey runners. Is R2000 for "Joma" brand shoes a good price? My girl wanted Nike but almost fell on my back when I saw it costs R4300. Mr P sports have these weird brands that Iv'e never heard of but still costs R1200 - R2000 :eek:

Tip for running shoes. Buy the 2 or 3 year old models from places like Tekkie Town, and get a proper brand like Asics,Sauconi,Brooks,New Balance,Nike. Every year a new model comes out, thinner soles, thicker soles, more heel counter, less heel counter, thinner uppers, thicker uppers, more support, less support, more heel rise, less heel rise, harder rubber, softer rubber.,

It keeps going in circles. Save the bucks, and get the older models for 50% to 70% less than the latest model.

For Nike you can always try and get to a Nike factory outlet. I found that they often have older shoes (one older than current) that is priced well. Same with New Balance. Their factory store has been great.

Ultra runners use MaXed, you can also try this brand if you want.

True, but you have to keep in mind they are sponsored by Mr Price, and tend to be 55kg running machines with excellent form that can probably get a Comrades gold in a pair of school shoes.

Not saying Maxed is bad, they are probably fine. But if you are an 80kg plus, injury prone middle aged runner. (like me), you have to be careful with your shoes.

R2000 - R3000 is pretty much the price range for mid range shoes from the big, well known brands. R4300 seems a bit excessive unless it's for a carbon plated racing shoe.

As @notayoba pointed out it's always a good idea to buy older models. They are just as good as the latest model and often comes at a much reduced price. Also be on the lookout for sales if you are comfortable with online purchases. Takealot often have a runner's day promotion where they discount running items and they sometimes have great specials on older stock/colourways.

Puma is a great online site with frequent sales from between 30% - 60% off on their shoes.
