The official running thread™

This flu sucks. Day 5 and all the congestion hit. Decided to stay home today as four other people at work is also sick. Seems I'm over the worst of it, but staying in bed seems to be the best option since it's the only time I don't get coughing fits and stuffy nose.

While I can't run I longingly looked through my stats and see I've hit 1011 km for the year.

So when you entering the comrades?
I ran comrades last year and had actually qualified and entered for this years race, with a seeding position near the front of Wave A. However I decided to forfeit my entry this year to focus on rebuilding my base fitness and regaining my speed. Training for Comrades last year significantly affected my speed and I’ve been struggling to return to my peak performance from 2023.

With winter approaching and my work schedule easing up I dedicated eight weeks to high volume training (160–180 km per week). The colder weather atm. makes it easier to stay in lower heart rate zones, allowing me to focus more on zone 2 runs and three key workouts each week. I’ve also come to realize that at age 33 strength training is no longer optional if I want to stay injury free otherwize I end up with nagging aches and pains like lower back discomfort and shoulder issues.

All I know is Hoka is expensive in SA xD
Yes, however here's some insight info... Hoka is planning on opening a few dedicated hoka shops in SA which will allow us to buy directly from their website and them being able to run better discounted sales in the next year. Hoka shoes aren't bad. I've had a few pairs in my rotation in the past and they were reasonably comfortable. their trail running range is also good.

I did the assessment thing at a local running shop. It turns out I have two feet, and they're different sizes, and flat arches, and I overpronate like a mofo. (I knew that already)

(dunno why they felt the need to measure my balls...)

They prescribed some Hoka Arahi 7 shoes (or brooks, but I've tried those before and they hurt my achilles too much - the hokas are more about support than control so they're a lot more comfortable.)

So, we continue week 2 of couch 2 5k tomorrow morning and see whether they help stop everything hurting :D
Lol, two feet! Way to go for being just like the rest of us.No three footed mutants here!
But seriously, Stop running on the side of the road. It's curved. It fooks up your form and foot strike. run on dirt roads and find flat road with little to no curve.

Kudo's for hitting 1k kilometers this year.

I'm mainly on pavement at the moment and it's mostly level. Just a few places where it slopes. There aren't many dirt roads around here, but quite a few trails which are considerably less level than the pavements

Also well done on that achievement. When did you start running if you don't mind me asking?

I started running at the age of 14. I ran mostly middle distance ie. 1500m or 1 mile (1.6km) and 3000m or 2 miles (3.2km) depending where and who we competed against. At the age of 16-17 I moved up to long distance ie. 5000m and 10000m.

There was a gap of about 5 years where I did not run at all and picked up running again around the the year I turned 24.

My Training has been incredible these past few weeks.

The 4 colours I like to see on Garmin!

Green - Productive
yellow - Lowering mileage
Blue - Taper
Purple - Peaking (Body is absorbing all the training I did)

Last night I went for a 8 km run under the full moon 3km warmup, 5km at Zone 3 pace 4:08 -4:11 min per km (no cooldown lol)
The time I spent in Zone 4 were the strides I did towards the end of my run. My Zone 3 should end somewhere around 3:50 -3:55 with zone 4 between 3:20 - 3:50.

This is going to be a good year I'm so close to where I was in 2023

Phase 2 starts next week. Higher mileage weeks, higher intensity workouts, more strength training and focus more on eating well as my diet is one department where I fall short

Adidas still have a end of season sale going and you get an additional 10% discount on sale items when you checkout. I snatched a pair of adizero sl2 shoes to add to my dailys. The Sl2 and bostons are the ones to buy if anyone is interested.

I've seen some posts on Facebook with people complaining that their Adidas shoes' soles started flaking after a couple of miles. Of course I can't seem to be able to find those posts now. A quality control issue?

A full week of no running for me. Not sure if I should chance a run tomorrow if I still feel decent. Still lots of mucus, but thankfully mostly confined to sinuses.

Nope, I've never experienced that issue with adidas before. The bostons and adizero sl shoes are great shoes. The bostons have continental rubber so you can expect the shoes to give atleast 600-800km's apart from the continental grip the bostons comes quite close to the puma deviate shoes in terms of responsiveness and comfort. I hope you get well and are able to return to running soon. Sometimes a break does the body good.

Thanks, it's just frustrating since I was just getting back to upping my mileage to the level I was before I had the ear issue. And then the flu hit.

I really don't need more shoes, although those Bostons do look nice.
